Guts was about to take a sip, but instead puts the bottle back down.

"So, that's how far it has gotten... Anyone who thinks, let alone says that is a fool. I'll be honest, I don't think highly of Heroica, but I doubt the veterans would allow such idiots to remain in the ranks. They are going against what Heroica was created for, protecting Eubric... Anyone that calls themselves a "Hero" and works with the Wolfgang is a criminal in my book."

"To be fair, I haven't seen the Veterans - other than the Copper Fox, nor have I really dealt with the Wolfgang in a quest. I'm just going off of the fact that the Wolfgang is an organization of thieves, gangsters, poisoners, and other felons.

"A party left not too long ago to protect the Houses' leaders at the Foundation Day ball - I believe Master Guffington is there as well - and it was suspected that the Wolfgang might try something there. Hopefully there will be positive news regarding the leading criminal faction when they return."

Hybros wandered aimlessly through the streets of Eubric. Guts had taken them back to the docks on his ship. "I am fine, really," the imp told the human. But Guts seemed eager to return to the Hall, so Hybros didn't say anything else. Perhaps they would quest again soon. After what seemed like hours, Hybros returned to the Hall. He noted Guts seated next to Docken, both talking in hushed voices. He also saw the red-headed woman who had tried to steal from Guts's ship. He rolled his eyes, and asked Shcherezade for an apple. He tossed it to the masked woman and nodded pointedly.

"Chairis. My parents moved there from Dastan, so I never got the accent. My dad started his own business as a merchant. He merged with the Shadeux to increase his sales revenue and then moved to Chairis shortly thereafter."

Karie chuckles.

"I was eighteen when my folks decided to send me off to university. They said they "couldn't handle my behaviour!" Never really found it insightful. Just a few old guys trying to exploit the richer families. And for what? A piece of paper and the right to wave it in others faces? Yeah right. I'll never understand why my sister was so intent on staying there."

She takes a swig out of the bottle.

"Hmm..." Alexandre frowns as if confused,"what behaviour?"

"Anyways," hearing snippets of the conversation across the room, "what do you think of this Wolfgang? Lie or not? Do you think they actually want to help Eubric?"

Karie reacted just in time as an apple soared right at her head. She caught it in the air and looked to see who tossed it. The imp nodded. She looked at the apple and back at the imp. She tipped her nonexistant hat and gave a half hearted smile. She felt as if salt had been rubbed into her wound. A wound created by injured pride.

She took a bite out of her apple and then turned to Alex.

"To be honest, I've heard nothing of 'em. The quest I signed for has something to do with a storehouse they own, but besides a group of organized thugs, nothing much."

"I'd never trust them. You just have to ask yourself, 'would I rather Eubric continue as it is, and have 6 powerful houses, or have 1 faction ruling?' Power seems best for the people when it is divided. One will get too corrupt, and they are corrupt already."

"Well, I guess you make a point."

Karie wasn't sure how to feel about this whole thing. She had witnessed first hand Dil and his scheme to monopolize on the cloth industry. She thought the shower would've help her relax. It seemed as if it was just the opposite.

"No no, both quests were successful it's just... complicated. Really complicated."

Even after his death, the image of the Apprentice was still in her head. She still had no clue what precisely the Apprentice did to her, but the dual pronged scar was still on her body. All she could remember was everything going black as she could faintly hear and feel what was going on, with a few blurry visions in between. Some were from the battle with the Apprentice, right there and then, but others were more abstract. She still felt used. She still abused. She still felt wrong.

"Look, I don't want to talk about it, and if you're going to persist I'm not going to sit here!"

She got up and walked out of the bar with her apple. She didn't want the world to see the wounded Karie, the fragile Karie, the weak Karie.

William wakes up and stretches out the pains in his arms and legs. He was about to call his horse when he remembered it ran away and he ended up with a stone with its face on it instead. He notices that the Hall has even less people and orders a meal and eats alone.

Karie finds a spot on the stairs outside the hall and sits. She looks at her apple and goes to work finishing it off. It seemed nothing lasts. Especially pleasant days. First Drake, then Alexandre persistently questioning her. She sat and wait for the next unpleasant event to kick her down the steps leading up to the hall.

Karie looks at the man sitting beside her. She didn't register that it was Romulus until after she noticed the clothes he was wearing were the same that were Romulus wore.

"It's nothing important. Just... stuff."

Romulus wouldn't understand her situation. Would he? She kept it to herself and avoided eye contact with Romulus.

"Look, we've all been through hard times. I recently discovered my son is dead. I hated life, I sided with the being who caused hundreds of fatalities. We have all made mistakes, sometimes it is best to talk about it."

Posted

Karie was shocked to hear Romulus had a son. She took a moment and bit into her apple.

"I was brainwashed by this guy, back on my first quest, called me a lab rat and insisted I'd enjoy being under his thrall. He jabbed his weapon at me and I went blank. When I came to, I was standing beside him and he insisted I enjoyed it. He said he would get me, and for that one moment be did. The worst part is I have no clue what I did or what I said. I feel wrong Romulus. I came here to get away from Chairis and all the baggage I left there. It seems as if more just keeps piling on me."

She hangs her head in shame.

"I felt the same. I attacked Johon, I layed into him, blow after blow, I had no idea what I was doing. I was under the Regrets influence, it was terrible. The feeling of not being able to help yourself. " Romulus nods slowly.

"I was from Charis too. I left there are getting attacked by humans and vampirs. Eubric seemed good. Then I had to go back. I was responsible for a charisian princess' death. Then I worked for the Guild of Invision. I saved 1, but felt bad while doing it. "

"But that is the life of a hero."

Posted

Karie gives a small smile. Some she could relate to on more than one level.

"You're from Charis? Small world!"

Karie took another bite out of her apple.

"My parents were from Dastan and moved to Charis shortly after my older sister was born. I never picked up the accent of either the Charisians or the Dastanese."

She tossed the apple core onto the lawn.

"So you're a werewolf? I hope I don't come off as rude if I ask who you became a lycanthrope?"

Posted

"From both my parents. My grandfather got bit then it passed on since."

Romulus laughs "I didn't get the accent either."

"I cant give Charis much praise, but it was less corrupt than Eubric. On that note, What do you think of the houses?"

Posted

"From what I've seen, I can't trust them. The Hinckwells are the only one I'be dealt with personally, and they seemed in it only for the coin. They seem the like to do only what's best for themselves and their benefactors. Only problem is that it's in my best interest to keep a good reputation with them. Oh well. I've heard about these Wolfgang guys, a group of crooks trying to be become the seventh house. What do you know about them?"

Posted

"I have no love for any, but I'd work with the Bonaparte. The Wolfgang seem like more than just your average crooks to me. They seem to be changing this city, for the better: I mean the town watch built a damn wall around the Hovels."

Posted

"Well, call me devil's advocate, the next quest I'm on is for the town watch. The Hovels is the poorer area of the city, right? It's as the old saying goes: out of sight, out of mind."

Karie pulled her dagger out of her sleeve and begins to play with it, tossing it up and down.
