The Town Watch official made his way into the hall once again, quickly scanning the list and jotting down names in his notebook.

"Jeez, there's a lot of name's here! Some newer heroes as well, some veterans, a Regulator... perhaps some background checks are in order..."

The official quickly closes his notebook, stuffs it into his already full pockets and marches into the hall's gallery.

Sarge walks back into the hall and Signs up for Quest #83. He then sits down where he was before. His win had put him in a good mood, or maybe that was the drink. He slumps in his original seat and uncorks a bottle of something nameless. After a while he turns to Benji. "I won"

Karie returns to the bar slightly light headed. She was still trying to get the poison out of her system. She sat down at the bar and looked about the bar, trying to avoid eye contact with people she'd prefer not talking too.

"A glass of water. And a bucket. I feel ill."

Seeing your great times 17 grand daughter walk into the same establishment then you and promptly about to vomit is... odd. I simply wave half halfheartedly, trying to see if she'd respond at all.

Karie sees Sorrow waving at her halfheartedly. She returns the gesture, and begins to walk over to the table he's sitting at, bucket in tow.

"So... anything new happen since our last meeting... um, great, great... Sorrow?"

She still felt awkward being around her great times seventeen grandfather, and her mannerism's reinforced it. Her only relative left that she knew of that was directly related to her was a four hundred year old undead guy. Socially awkward situation, much?

Posted

I look awkwardly down at the bucket.

"Uhh... Need a remedy?

Anyway, went on a quest. Involved some mind-altering chemical and some sort of Order Imperial."

"Just a swig."

Karie graps one of Sorrow's remedies and takes a sip from it. Actually, no, that would be inaccurate. She leaves about three fourths of the thing left, nearly gagging on the taste. She finally manages to swallow it.

"Thanks. I feel better."

"Oh. Hmm. I suppose I've been there, done that."

"Lab rat."

Karie cringes at the thought of another alternative to Exterlate spreading throughout the city. She hoped Masson had nothing to do with it, and if he did...

"You hungry? I haven't eaten in awhile."

Posted

"Yeah, a bit. Meads and Nostrums aren't exactly the most filling of beverages, and they're pretty essential to the Hero business."

I cork the remedy, placing it back into my cloak. A single word drifts through my mind - "Hammerspa-"

Shaking off the random musing, I decide to focus back on reality.

"Are you okay, Karie? You look a bit... pensive, that's all."

Posted

Karie looks down, a little lost in thought. Should she open up to Sorrow? If anything, the reason she blew up previously was because she didn't vent for almost a year. She sighed.

"It's... difficult to explain. Sorrow... do you think I'm... weak? I'm starting to doubt myself in combat. I mean, I lost to that one legged, drunkard, and I got...well, I got hexed again. Twice. And this time I know what I said, but I know I didn't say it. I'm just... confused."

Posted

"Well... I've been told by Althior you faced down some pretty nasty demons. That takes a fair amount of skill, right there.

As for being weak-hearted. We all are, in our own ways. I spent 400 years searching for a way to save my father - I don't even know where he is now, or if he's alive. All I know that, in time I spent acting like a lost child, I failed to realize I was getting old. very old.

Now, I'm weak hearted in the literal sense; every day I wonder whether or not my heart will give out... But enough of that.

But enough of that. The important thing about being weak hearted is that you have someone to lean on about it. Do you have anyone like that, Karie? Friends, family, close ones?"

Posted

"Well, I know Em would stick up for me. So would Masson and Octavyn. My adoptive sister would listen to me, but she's all the way out in Charis.

And I guess there's you."

Karie looked up at Sorrow. She felt it strange that she never ever saw his face. She was curious as to what was behind the glow.

"You're technically the closest person I have for a relative. Even if the gap's four hundred years."

Karie surprisingly took her domino mask off and looked at it, amused.

"I suppose you and me are kind of similar. You never really knew you're family, and I only remember my Kayla from the day I was taken to Charis. It was cold. Very cold."

Karie's amusement slowly turned to melancholy as she spoke. She put the mask down and looked at Sorrow.

"What was it like growing up for you?"

Posted (edited)

I take another sip, my shoulders sagging bit - relaxing. This banter was getting slightly less awkward.

"Em. Good gentleman - quested with him. Masson... Your significant other right now, right? Can't say I've heard of Octavyn."

"My childhood was likely a lot different from yours. I grew up in a community of Necromancers, way before the Orcish Wars - deep in the heart of the forest. It was quite the eccentric community. Some of the jolliest people you'll ever meet, despite being masters of the dead. Need a pot of water for soup? Take it outside, make it rain, then carry it in and set the thing on fire with your hands.

Those who weren't necromancers either became master craftsmen or warriors. I trained and fell into the third option."

I look at Karie, a bit surprised she unmasked herself. I look down at the black mask in the palms of her hands.

"Why the mask, may I ask?"

"You're not the first to ask that."

She continued to look at her mask pensively as she spoke.

"I don't know. It's just... something I do, you know? I woke up one day and said "hey, I'm going to paint myself white and wear a domino mask!" It's a tick, you know. I do it because... I can. You'd think I was covering burn scars and what not, but I'm not. I'm only covering up one scar and a swirly tattoo on my back. I got nothing better, really..."

~Two new quests have been posted on the Quest Board (#84 by Zepher and #85 by Sandy)!~

It had been ages since Byblos had stepped out of his Library, but something told him that this day would be a perfect time to stretch his legs - if only with a walk around the Hall. Heads turned as the librarian emerged from his hiding place, his clothes tattered and cheeks hollow, and dark circles around his eyes. The looks on the passers-by reflected pity and disgust. As he passed the Saloon, Scheherazade greeted him and made a comment, but Byblos ignored it completely.

He was inexplicably drawn to the quest board to read the latest quest pitches. Immediately his eyes spotted a word.

"Demons..."

Byblos took out a pen and scribbled his name, signing up to Quest#85.

Guts rose from his seat to see two new quests posted... Not afraid of sand, heat and demons... The raider resisted a chuckle, it seemed he was exactly who they were looking for. Turning his head, Guts noticed Byblos standing at the questing board as well.

"If it isn't our book-monkey. You don't look so good, if you don't mind me saying."

"If it isn't our book-monkey. You don't look so good, if you don't mind me saying."

Byblos turned his head to the speaker.

heroicanpc-byblos2.jpg

"Gutter, was it? I... just need to go out more, I reckon. See the world again. This quest in particular intrigues me. Azzurat - a kingdom buried under sand... I have always wanted to visit the ruins."

It was a blatant lie. In the past, Byblos would have never dared to venture into such a dangerous place. Things had certainly changed from that.

The raider's eyebrows went down deep at Byblos' comment, but then he smirked: "Gutter. I like that one. I assume you've been keeping the black book I gave in your care safe? It's a powerful thing. If you're gonna go out on a trip, just remember to make sure no one can get to it."

"Don't worry, Gutter. The book will never leave my sight. Which reminds me..."

The librarian scurried off, back to the Library. The book had told him that he had stretched out enough.
