"Let alone a dinosaur!"

She laughs with him. However, she quickly changes her mood as Sorrow tells his story.

"Eu-yuck. I hate spiders. I don't care if you named him Fuzzy, I don't get why people like spiders, they're gross."

"Mreooow!"

"That's right, even Hershey shares the sentiment."

Karie grabs the pitcher and ours her glass with water again. She takes note of Sorrow's raunchy looking hand.

"Are you okay? You're hand looks really bad."

[Endgame]

"I wonder if you two share the same thoughts on foreign politics?" I jest.

"Hey, he was steadfast, loyal, didn't require much uptake, and shot glow in the dark string. What's not to like?"

My gaze shifts back to my mutilated hand, scarlet-caked shards of glas still poking out from the flesh. my mood once again turns somber as I remember Costello's grim diagnosis.

"...Infected. As you predicted. May need amputation if I don't find the cure fast enough."

[Kintobor]

Karie feels a sudden sense of pity, and a sudden sense of realization. Her only surviving relative was weak, and could drop at any minute.

"Is there anything I can do to help? I hope you know what the cure is. Perhaps I could assist with my healing abilities?"

[Endgame]

"A certain herb - a Sunshine Shimmer, found in forests near Eubric. I may have to set off to find it soon if I can't find someplace that serves it."

I sigh.

"I doubt it, Karie. You need alchemy for issues like this, I think."

[Kintobor]

"You mean a Sunset Shimmer? I remember hearing about a herb like that. Not that I know where it grows."

Karie still didn't feel right leaving Sorrow to fend for himself. They were blood. Very separated blood, but still blood.

"I'll keep an eye out. If I see anything I'll let you know. You said it yourself, we all need people to fall back on, sometimes."

Karie tried to give Sorrow a reassuring smile, clenching his other, not pussy hand. It was cold to touch.

[Endgame]

My eyes are downcast, trying to avoid the sight of my hand.

"Thanks, Karie.

...You know..."

I sigh.

"I've realized that I'm a relic, someone who has long overstayed their welcome on Olegaia. So I've come to terms with it. Come to terms with death. Is that... strange?"

Karie meanders over to the quest board, snatching up the pen, her new cat following closely behind her.

"Hmm, demons, reporters, murder, blah blah blah... retrieving stolen wares? This sounds simple enough."

Karie signs up for Quest #84.

Here we go again...

"Look, Sorrow. You're doing yourself more harm than you realize. No one's ready for death. No one is truly ready to kick the bucket. Sorrow, surely you have something to live for?"

Intrigued, I sign up for Quest 84

Here we go again...

"Look, Sorrow. You're doing yourself more harm than you realize. No one's ready for death. No one is truly ready to kick the bucket. Sorrow, surely you have something to live for?"

"The clothes on my back. Everything I own I have on me right now. I've been through oblivion once... When my time comes, I won't be afraid to do it again.

Make no mistake: I don't want to do it. But I know it is inevitable, and I've come to peace with the reaper over my shoulder. I'm going to try to do as much good as possible before the end."

"I... guess."

Karie wondered how much Sorrow actually cared for her. Would his good include coming to terms with her? She began to ponder what she was here for. Karie continues to pet Hershey.

"Mreo-eoow."

[Endgame]

"Random question, Karie... Are you content with how things are going for you?"

[Kintobor]

"As of right now, yeah. I still haven't gotten over the whole adopted thing, but I feel better than when I, say, got back from Brendenton. I've got Masson now, and a new job. I've got Hershey over here, and I suppose despite our rocky start, it's good to sort of get to know you."

Karie picked Hershey up and set her on her lap. Hershey slumps and lays there, grooming herself.

[Endgame]

"Despite my previous... trangressions... I am glad to hear you're doing well for yourself. I guess I'm just happy to see someone else leading a good life due to my previous efforts... Maybe it's a great times seventeen grandfather thing.

But you've got a lover, a good job, a home, and a family, despite the distance. Cherish it - you're already doing much better than I ever have."

"Don't beat yourself like that! Sorrow, I'm here, and I care. You're the closest to actual blood I have, and vice versa. Does my existence not mean anything, Sorrow?"

Karie looked quite serious as she looked Sorrow over.

"Of course your existence is meaningful, Karie! To your co-workers, to your fellow heroes, to Masson, to me. You really do mean a lot to me, Karie. I... jut have no clue how to really express it, thats all. For all of my life I felt like a wayward son, trying to find his father - and it turns out while I was busy being a lost child, I became a grandfather. Then a great grandfather. And now, we're here. I guess I've never had any real experience being an elder to someone.

Karie... Know that I'm sincere when I say I'm glad I've met you. The fact that you exist, that you care, is one of the reasons why I won't feel like I lived a wasted life when my time comes. I'll know that my actions in the past, no matter how questionable they might've been, gave someone a good life. Making people happy... It is my job as a hero, isn't it?"

"I sure hope so, we're counting on it!"

The young gnome crawls out from a table nearby Sorrow and Karie, brushing his short pants free of dirt and looking between them briefly with a cheerful grin before realizing the dramatic tension he's destroyed.

"Err, I'll be going, then."

The boy shuffles through the scattered crowd, that he'd taken cover from until it dispersed, and was just barely able to hop up and pin a notice over top one of the Quests.

The activity around the questboard attracts Nyx's attention, and as people gradually clear away she makes her way over, watching Hybros and Guts leave on another adventure as she walks over.

She scans down the board. Hmm, not chosen for the bodyguard duty, and that was where the others were headed, oh well. The Hinckwell manor thing... she'd just come back from gruesome events (some of which she'd caused) at a grand house, maybe that wasn't what she needed right now. Nyx removes her name from Quest #83: Four's Company.

Her eyes scan down further... more Hinckwell shenanigans, still feuding with the Shadeaux, she grimaces slightly and keeps reading until she sees the Oracle's request. That was much more like it, somewhere warm with lots of things to blow to smithereens. The desert had never been too bad, except the walking, lack of soft furnishings and sand that got everywhere, but at least she might be warm and dry for once. And there was still the blowing up demons thing. Her eyes flash a little when she sees Byblos' name carefully penned. Curious. Too curious, almost.

Hershey growls at the gnome as he walks off, attempting to swat at him as he passes by.

"Look, Sorrow... god, I'm such an idiot! Look, I'm just worried is all. I managed to lose one person who cared for me to the point he would kill himself for me... but I don't want to see you more hurt than you already are. If there's something you want to talk about, I'll be here. Most of the time."

Jeaux watched as a group left the hall to attend the unveiling. He had hoped to see more of the masked man and learn more of the guild's capabilities. If they could restore life to the dead, it was hard to imagine what might be outside of their reach. He looked to the quest board once more. He saw a couple of requests from the Hinkwell's on the board, though neither held much interest for him. From what he had seen in Eubric, the Hinkwell's and Shadeaux acted like children, either one despising the other for reasons they had likely forgotten many years ago. He noticed the notice from the proggs had been extended. Jeaux was unsure who the proggs were, but a chance for more knowledge of this world would be perhaps be another opportunity to find his place in it. He signed his name under the list for Quest #81. The final quest that had been posted sounded rather odd. A tale of demons and evil, based solely on a person's dreams. While it was likely nothing more than someone's delusions, he signed his name for Quest #85 as well. A chance to explore beyond the Free Islands seemed like a welcome change of pace.
