"It's not the specific information that's the real issue--it's the idea that other Heroes are somehow "unworthy" to hear about our pasts. Karie's just as much a Hero as you or me, she doesn't deserve to be excluded just because she doesn't happen to share our history. Heck, she leans a bit more toward the 'me' side, which means it's even more important for us to be there for her when she's most vulnerable. You have no idea what she's been through, Dyric. You could have been for her what you were for me when we were fighting Wren and in the days after--a trusting friend, a brother in a world that seems like it's turned against her. Excluding her...it's just so unlike you, and it's counterproductive to making Heroica better."

"There is that. I just don't think I'm doing a good enough job."

Arthur glances out the window, noting the angle of light now streaming into the Hall. "It's been good catching up with you. I'd best be off for my meeting." He catches Dyric's eye. "Be well, brother." And with that, Arthur Regulus leaves Heroica Hall, in search of something new, something he hadn't thought he'd have again...

...His future.

'Unworthy?' What? I did it to protect her. What she doesn't know won't hurt her. I was with her until she turned her back on us, brother. I can assure you that.

But if you are leaving, I won't have it be this way. Farewell, brother, and let you find some peace that you couldn't find here.

'Name's Dyric Rone. Pretzel, right?

"Right," I affirm.

"In that case, I owe you all another apology. I and my party fought him myself, along with Shawe and the Knights of Patuqun about a year back. We probably could have finished him off, too, if it weren't for that idiot dwarf with us. If I see him again, I'm pulling a Vonnetate on him, I don't care how many of his cronies pile on to me in the process."

"Idiot dwarf, eh?" I chuckle. "They can have the tendency to be that way...idiotic, I mean. What's a 'Vonnetate'?" I ask of Dyric, seeing the Arthur has left.

"More importantly, she--and I, for that matter--is a perfect example of why it's a bad idea for us to have ulterior motives for taking on a Quest. It almost invariably leads to betrayal--like what she did to her party on her last Quest for Heroica, like what I did to my own when fighting her. Bad news all around."

I raise an eyebrow, but keep silent.

Black, inky blood.

Purpearl enters the Hall, heads straight to the Quest Board and signs up for Quest #120. <Right, I need a shield. Perhaps I should head on to the Marketplace> she thought to herself. <Perhaps a drink at the Saloon wouldn't hurt, since there's still time> and Purpearl heads up to the Saloon.

Hearing Purpearl's mutter.

I call over. "I can sell you the same shield you'd get in the marketplace for 35 gold if you want it."

A man in a black, bat-winged, face-concealing helmet enters the Hall. Though he had left the place just the previous night, today he was unrecognizable. A small golden dragon trails timidly in his wake as he climbs the stairs to the Saloon, relishing his newfound--though undoubtedly temporary--anonimity.

Sidling up to the bar, the Dragoon notices another armored figure, this one seemingly unused to her apparently new armament.

"Hello there. I don't think I've seen you around before. Judging by your gear, I'd guess you're a Mystic Knight? Don't see a shield, though--you in the market for one?"

OOC: Not to worry, I'm not leaving just yet.

Well, you're definitely asking the right man. Remember the Pongcanis? Vonnetate was a chieftain, an extremely dangerous chieftain who was also more than a little insane. Went around ripping people apart and ruining villages for no reason than spite. I fought with him once and he betrayed us and nearly cost a war. The next time we met, I decapitated him. I could show you his head, if you like.

Oh I know, I just want the mithril.

Purpearl nods at the Dragoon and his golden dragon, "Hello, you must be... friends with the Shadeaux? I must say, you and the senior sitting right there are very observant." Purpearl signals at Pretzel, acknowledging his offer.

"I am indeed in search of a shield. But I am not prepared to part with my gold. I will try my luck to find one if I get onto another quest. I see that you have a relatively sturdy arm shield, do you mind if I hold that for a second? The ones at Copper Fox's place would be ideal, but they are neither for loan or for sale...... Oh forgive me, my name's Purpearl Berthadhiell, and you can say I am relatively new around here. Have a seat." And Purpearl pours a drink for the Dragoon.

"I'd recognize a Mystic Knight anywhere--believe it or not, I used to be one a while back." He offers his hand to Purpearl. "Call me Regulus. This is Miirym."

"Feel free to try out the shield if you'd like. Believe it or not, it used to be one of those weak ones from the Marketplace. One of the better parts of being a Mystic Knight is getting to enchant your own gear." He unfastens the Lion - emblazoned shield from his arm and holds it up for Purpearl to try on. "Give it a try," he says.

Purpearl extends her hand to Regulus and nods at Miirym. "Regulus. Miirym."

Purpearl straps the shield onto her arm and moves her arm around, assuming several stances with the shield. She could feel the outcome of her training with Copper Fox, something she could not do as a Mage. "Your magic flows deep within this shield, strengthening it to what is it now. I'm impressed." Purpearl hands the shield back to Regulus, "I like it, but it is ultimately yours. I have yet to enchant my own, I would love to do the same someday as you've done to your shield."

Arthur shrugs. "I don't know. That one seems to suit you." He glances towards Miirym, then takes a sip of the drink Purpearl had poured for him. "Tell you what," he says, reaching into his bag and pulling out the Crescent Shield he had bought from Hybros, "I recently acquired this shield from a friend of mine, but I don't really feel like paying to have it upgraded. If you can get it as strong as my old Arm Shield, I'll let you have the old one. Make it better and I'll even pay you half what I would have paid for the extra upgrades. Sound fair?"

"Sounds reasonable to me, I will gladly accept your offer."

Arthur passes the shield to Purpearl. "Best of luck to you--hopefully it serves you well." Finishing his drink, the Dragoon gets up and leads the way down to the Quest board, his draconic companion trailing in his wake. About halfway down he stops for her, murmurs something, and holds his cloak open, allowing the little dragon to crawl in and cling to the reinforced fabric.

Upon reaching the bottom of the stairs, the Dragoon stands there staring at the two offered Quests. The first was unacceptable, of course--he'd never willingly work for the Bonapartes--but the second one had piqued his interest. Helping the Ji Pei...but do I really want to risk getting that close to home?

Miirym pokes her head out of the cloak, dislodging a shard of bluish crystal from an inner pocket.

<Why is going home a risk?> she asks mentally, <And where is home? >

"It's--" Arthur stops himself. "Actually, this place is probably the closest we'll ever have to a home. My homeland is..." the Dragoon pauses, struggling with how to explain distance and place to a newborn dragon with no sense of reference to the world. "...a long way from here," he finishes lamely. "They...don't really like me there."

Before his dragon can question him further, Arthur kneels down to reclaim his Mythril Shard. I should probably sell this off, he thinks to himself. Miirym cocks her head curiously but does not interrupt his thoughts again; she soon retreats into her caretaker's cloak as he steps forward to write a note on the board:

Selling Mythril Shard

250 gold

See the Dragoon in the Saloon

Snickering a little at his own bad joke, the Dragoon starts back up the stairs once more.

Spying the bulky Alchemist around I query, "Still interested in Grating Stones. I've got one of those available. Selling for 300...you know...inflation...or whatever."

Having pondered long enough, Arthur decides to bite the bullet and sign up for Quest 120. Hopefully I can help, he thinks. Protecting someone, especially someone worthy...that's what I want do do with my life. His thoughts drift to the little dragon clinging to his cloak, when the sound of soft snoring informs him she has fallen asleep. Smiling, the ex-Skirmisher climbs the stairs back to the Saloon once more.

"Alright then. Just don't spend all of it on propaganda, will you?" Guts hands over the gold. and starts sharpening immediately.

Hey Pretzel, I'll get back to you in a second. I think I might just make use of your sales. For now, I've got some mythril to buy.

Rone follows the parchment's instructions, and find the helmeted Dragoon. Something about him seems vaugely familiar, but Dyric can't pin down what exactly.

I'd like to buy that shard you've got.

The Dragoon looks over Dyric in wonderment, again surprised at how simple it was for him to become so utterly anonymous. Taking a moment to check on the still-sleeping Miirym, he silently holds out the Shard with one hand and holds out the other expectantly for his Gold.

Dyric pays the 250 with a sigh, he was going to need all the money he could scrounge up to get that crossbow in working condition. He bounces the final piece of mythril in his hands and pockets it. He finally had a full piece, Claire was going to get a kick out of that. Dyric regards the Dragoon one last time. Not a lot of heroes that experienced around, he ought to have met him before. The guy was quieter than Em, though. He figured it would be rude to question him too deeply. Finally he made his way back to the Monk.

Alright, Pretzel. Let's talk deal. I need to upgrade the crossbow I got. What's the best you can do for me?

The Hall doors creak as Matthias pushes his way in, the newly-restored Fireball Extraordinaire gleaming brightly but still weighing him down. Looking around, he notes the elf harlot sitting at the bar, as well as Lady Purpearl - now heavily armored - sitting near a man in a bat helm. Crossing to the Quest Board, he signs his name to the lists for Quest 119 and Quest 120, though the 300 gold reward for 119 seems a much better deal to his mind. That done, he pulls a small parchment from his pocket and attaches it to the board as well.

For Sale:

Large, wicked Axe

150 gold or trade offers

Contact Matthias the Carnival Crusader

Also various headwear available

As the ranger makes his way to the bar, he notices a doorway he doesn't remember. Curious, he walks through and leaves the Hall behind him.

After contemplating for a long while Namyrra finally gets up and walks to the quest board to sign up for Quest 120, hoping to make amends for her failure to help the Ji Pei so very long ago.

"What's it to you what I spend it on?" I say mockingly. "You've got a strange smell around you these days. What have you been drinking recently?"

I think quickly for an easy amount.

"I can give you 15 percent off."

"You must be talking of my alchemical compounds. I've got enough to mix up whatever I come up with when needed."
