Miderun slunk back into the hall after the long journey back from her most recent quest, ignoring the bar, quest board, and other heroes for once and proceeding straight to an empty table. She sat down, clasped her hands in what looked like a prayer, and fell silent for quite some time.

The same young boy hops into Heroica Hall, overjoyed to see that the number of sign-ups had spiked. He posts another notice on the board before leaving.

Chosen Heroes for Quest #134: The Sky is Falling

-Vindsval Half-Born (Asphalt)

-Annie Anavar (Kintobor)

-Warlen Melimane (The Chosen Minifigure)

-Sylph Solanum (Dannylonglegs)

-Throlar Wineghilm (Lord Duvors)

I'll be waiting on the Western outskirts of Eubric, heroes! Just go to the treasury and take the nearest exit out of the city. I'll be there, and I can tell you more about the meteor thingy.

-Manny Brixby

QM Note: Quest thread coming up in a few hours.

Seeing its name on the notice board, Sylph stood from a lonely seat in the darkened corner of the hall. The cold wind called back to him. It was time once more to leave the hall. But this time, the Quest would be a public affair, as opposed to the private quest he had occupied himself with in the years he was away. A bat dropped out of the rafters and nestled into his cloak. Sylph looked like walking rags, covered in twigs and leaves... but there had to be something beneath those rags... Something giving them purpose and motility... Something deep within those rags and metal helm had to have an agenda....

The wind opened the door for Sylph, and he exited the hall.

Annienal stands up and heads for the quest board. Out of the frying pan and into another adventure. It had seemed she just got here. She grabs her things and heads out to the outskirts of the city with a piece of bread in her mouth, hoping not to run into anything on the way there.

Vindsval sees Annienal exit the Hall.

Hold Up Annienal, allow a Friend to share your Journey.

"I'd offer something similar, but I'm off to the market first. I'll be seeing you later."

My scythe clicking quietly on the ground, I walk through the doors of Heroica Hall with a flourish. I looked for familiar faces...

"Awfully empty this time around." I say to no one in particular.

Miderun glanced at the shambling undead with a rather disgusted expression, and momentarily tensed as if considering reaching for her club.

"You too, eh?" I say, more amused than saddened by now.

" 'You too'? Is it a surprise that people want you to be really dead? Why haunt this Hall, Uzardser?"

Posted

"No, it's not. Why do I haunt this place? Well, I find that as long as I continue to do good work here, why not "haunt" a little bit longer? I've taken down dictators and archdemons, and saved many - my body will expire centuries before my reasons for living."

"The living can do those things. Your time has probably passed. Should your body not follow its soul?"

Posted

"That's how I was brought back."

I shrug.

"I have a soul, I believe. Perhaps not the one I started with, but I have one nonetheless. I died before I learned how to speak. I have lived my entire life like, well, this."

Miderun became less and less enthused with every word the undead told her.

"So...you are a living mind with a stolen soul wearing your corpse. 'Living' and 'my' and 'entire life' are not words to describe...that."

"I have all the components, and it was my mancer who retrieved my soul. You would blame me for things out of my control? Your race struggles with that in this very city, for Helvetia's sake, but thankfully it's getting better..."

"Do not compare us to you. We are not things cobbled together from parts not belonging to us after our time has passed. You seem to be of your own mind, why do you not find your peace in death? Your time is gone, you are just a...shell of what might have been. I just think you should die now, having already served Heroica faithfully, as you claim. Surely you have the sense to recognize what you are; the living can take care of themselves."

"It's the actions, not the origins, that define someone. My life, or lack thereof, is just as valid as your existence as long as I use it for the right things. I recognized what I was a long time ago. Didn't stop me from having a fiance, or a child, or a home, or a career as a hero. If you're asking me to lie down and die... It's not time for that. Not yet."

"It sounds to me like you did everything a living person could want, and that maybe it is past time you stopped ruining what keeps the living alive and the dead dead. We die for a reason. Coming back from that is an...insult, to what you were before you died, and to everyone else you've watched perish. Caz Zar ser ash ez a malhzerun, asht serz caz Iar azh miderun dol ezakh."

I finally look up from my drink, and make eye contact with you.

"You'll have to forgive me for not understanding your tongue, and you'll have to forgive me fr disagreeing with you. I have family, friends, things left to do. if I insult your beliefs, I am sorry, but it is beyond my control. My life is not defined around me being dead - I'd prefer to keep it as more of a footnote than anything else."

Johon glances at the sudden argument, having not talked to practically anyone inside the hall for the past few days, having spent much of his time running out and about. He interjects suddenly, trying to cool the orc's temper.

"Oi, Sorrow!" He says, taking a seat next to the two of them.

"Been quite a spell since I've seen you. Last we met was at that tournament, wasn't it?"

"It has been a while - too long. It must've been - that was, what, Grogmas?

I've become a necromancer since then, though I confess I haven't done much heroics since then. How about you?"

"No, but being alive is an important part of having a life," replied Miderun easily, taking a long sip of her ale. "Your life was over when you died. It is that simple. What I just said is a...poem? Malhzerun ei miderun. We used to have a lot of shamans that thought raising the dead to fight the war of the living was a good idea. Believing death is something more than...well, death. That is zarsh malhzern - death's soft lie. The lie that some find comfort in seeing as truth."

Miderun glanced at the odd, burly man sitting beside Sorrow and merely turned away from what seemed to be old friends to enjoy her drink.

"I haven't been doing much, lately. I believe the most recent events would be the scuffle we had with the Regret..." He says. "We should quest sometime, or perhaps at least traverse some of the city."

"Scratch one supervillain, then. Well done.

Yes, we should. The quest board has dried up completely as of late, though."
