Jinnipher approaches the old man, mug in hand. "150 gold for the Cloak of Necrotic Shielding."

Jinnipher hands over the coin and winks. "Longer than you might think, but maybe not as long as you gramps." She giggled at her own joke. "You're lucky to have lived as long as you have, for a human. Considering retirement any time soon?" It was a snarky remark, but there was no malice in her voice.

"Perhaps I once would have considered it, but it seems the more time passes, the more the world is in need of heroes...true heroes."

I accept the coin and hand her the Cloak of Necrotic Shielding.

"Agreed.

The problem is, no one can agree who exactly is a true hero, anymore. And the rest of us have resigned ourselves to being glorified mercs..."

"So you're a true hero, then?" Jinnipher frowned. "Usually one doesn't have to proclaim that of themselves to make it true. What great and noble deeds have you performed?" Her voice was filled with an airy sarcasm.

Karie snickered at all the"True Hero" talk, knowing she actually had such a title, and for a good reason.

"There's been a notable lack of work for the last two months. We've all been waiting, except Warlen - he's out in the Fields."

"You bet. Someone's gotta keep people in line here." Karie smiled sarcastically. "What've you been up to, Jinnipher, besides getting into trouble?"

"Care to explain the humor you seem to be deriving from this?"

"Oh, well, you see, I've been granted the title of "True Hero"." Karie shrugs, looking annoyed.

She eyed Lind with some disdain. "Not me." She closed her eyes and curled her lip slightly to lend an arrogant expression. "I just took down a couple of cocky spirits and a dragon with no wings - twice. Some loon of a wizard was trying her hand at necromancy. Maybe she should have tried it on a smaller animal first. But I guess that's just the job, cleaning up other people's messes. It's a good thing it pays so well, hah!" With the last laugh, she raised her eyebrows and averted her eyes to the side, biting the end of her finger idly. Something indicated that Heroica didn't really pay all that well.

"Jinn, I got 13 gold coins in my pocket. That's about as much as I had coming in, and I've been on 3 quests. My cousin Norma is threatening to kick me out. I somehow like the job, but it ain't very well paying."

Jinnipher waved her hand dismissively. "Stop whining. You got that Ancient Amber didn't you?"

"Yeah, but that goes into this stafff... Ain't gonna sell it, 'specially if we fight more dinosaurs.

Besides, you were thinking the same thing, unless Moon Elves just pensively bite their finger out of nowhere."

"Everything seems low-paying these days. I was sure I could at least raise a couple of gold with the store, but I've yet to make more than one sale, and the only profit I'll be deriving from that one is in the future..."

I am somewhat taken aback by Jinnipher's tone.

"For what purpose did you join Heroica, may I ask?"

"Oh, well, you see, I've been granted the title of "True Hero"." Karie shrugs, looking annoyed.

"I don't see how someone can feel like they can hand out a title such as that. One can only hand out titles if its from their line of work. I could not, for instance, proclaim you a "true alchemist" since alchemy is not my practice or profession, and I am unfortunately no expert at it."

But I guess that's just the job, cleaning up other people's messes.

"Well, said, and it appears the more messes we clean, the more crop up. I sometimes wonder if maybe people are becoming overly reliant on Heroica and willing to do crazy stuff because they know that if they get into a scrap of trouble some heroes will be able to bail them out.

"It's unfortunate that some people seem to only be in Heroica as a way of supporting themselves. I mean, these days if you are rogue and are not rolling in cash, you've got to be doing something wrong. Apart from that though, just trying to make a business of heroing will not get you too far. ...By the way, if any of you need stuff from the marketplace, I can get you a fifteen percent reduction on all items."

"Or, if they felled a great opponent, a person might take on their opponent's name, as a sort of trophy."

"Or it just took you a little while to determine your bearings."

"Hmm...So that'd be 170 gold then, for Black Knight's Armor, and 51 gold for Swift Boots?"

"Sounds like business as usual, I suppose." Karie comments. "Although, I more or less did my best to see the Oculoids through to the end, and I did, so sometimes I feel out of place hearing about other people's experiences. Gods, am I glad they're nothing but memories now." Karie grins, feeling pleased with herself for once in what felt like a millennium.

"Unless it was a veteran of Heroica, which, it was."

"Sad to say that's somewhat true." Karie comments. "The only reason I sleep in a house and not in an apartment or in the hall is mainly because I work with another organization. And that's all I'm going to say." Karie grins cheekily, enjoying leading people on.
