"What was left of Heroica broke apart. No one had faith in an organization that could be so easily corrupted. Even the pay and free booze wasn't enough to keep some people around after that."

Jinnipher sipped her mead. "That was when they started letting just anyone in. Funny, you'd think the Veterans would up security, but I guess you have to start somewhere..."

"Oh, really? I thought the relaxing of the "security" was what led up to the attack. Interesting that it only occurred after."

"Help with a birthday present. What do these people take us for. Bah! There's nothing going on here anyway."

Looking towards the questboard, I hesitate. "Ah, well, no harm in signing up."

I sign up for Quest #143.

"Shame on you for being an idiot. Do not lecture to me, boy. The girl was probably trying to get a rise out of you. Looks like she succeeded. If there was any danger, I'd know. Now run along and read your made-up religion's books. The saloon is no place for a kid like you."

Lind yawned. "If we have to rely on you to see when there's danger...well, I wouldn't be sleeping too comfortably." He stretched, and suddenly saw the quest board.

He leaped to his feet, and looked at the board.

"Hi! Alderflask! Skrall! Gabriel needs some help finding..." He squinted. "A present, for...his brother, I guess. Pay's 70 gold, so not grand, but it's work, and it's a job - and we'd get a lovely little vacation in the fresh Eubric Mountain air."

Karie yawned. "Sorry, but unless something big came of this, I'm out.

"Ah, well, that's your choice."

Besides, I've got reasons for not going on the quest."

"Oh?"

"It sounds pretty... menial, to be honest. That, or he's not telling us he's trying to deliver, like, the lost treasure of Eubrica or something."

"You get what jobs you can get, these days. Jobs are so rare, being picky doesn't pay, unless you have some really specific end in mind - and even then, it still doesn't really pay."

"My hubby's Gabriel's brother, making him my brother in law." She gives a snide glance at Jinnipher.

"Ah. The things you don't know about the people you work with...." Edited by Lind Whisperer

Calamity walks past the Quest Board carrying a bag containing black odd-shaped objects, and signs up for Quest 143.

Jinnipher watched the girl with hawkish eyes.

"My hubby's Gabriel's brother, making him my brother in law." She gives a snide glance at Jinnipher.

The Moon Elf seems unfazed by the revelation, but took note of Karie's demeanor. "So what then? You're not going to help family? Do you have something on the Sandman?"

Calamity notices someone staring at her. Because it's not like everyone else at the hall hates her or anything, she goes over to introduce herself.

"Hi, I noticed you looking my way, I'm Calamity, are you one of those Space Elves?"

Jinnipher crosses her arms and inspects Calamity head to toe. "Moon Elf, one of the few left. You caused quite the stir in here earlier, I hope you're not really trying to summon demons. I hate to say it, but the kid has a point. The last time heroes thought that was a wise idea... well, let's just say it didn't end up well for them. That being said, I doubt you could muster up anything worth fighting."

She bit her lip for a moment, then added, "You don't look so old yourself, for a human. Hope you're not afraid of barely-pubescent boys trying to tie a noose round your neck. Feel free to slap this one." She gestured towards Lind.

"That boy? I can take him. But, so could a slightly damp newspaper." She crosses her arms herself. "No, I am not 'trying to summon demons'. I just try to understand the magicks of the void. The resistance I am getting here is ridiculous. It's like if everyone just decided: Water, we are not going to deal with that stuff at all, just stay on land and hope we never get wet."

"Talk is cheap."

Kid, I'll take you on any day."

He cocked his eyelid a minute.

"Heck, I'll even let you have first turn. Heck, you know what? I'm generous - You can attack me first two times, before I do anything. And if you muss one of them, you can roll again."

"Maybe even three times, if it isn't going so well for you..."

"Lind, don't cause a scene..."

The Moon Elf seems unfazed by the revelation, but took note of Karie's demeanor. "So what then? You're not going to help family? Do you have something on the Sandman?"

"Maybe she just wants to spend the day with her husband, considering its his birthday and all?" Terry shrugs. "Back at my dad's farm, birthdays weren't days for running about."

"Water doesn't possess people to kill each other and cause mayhem."

"Too late."

Jinnipher flipped her hair back arrogantly. "What kind of present would it be if Gabriel meant to retrieve it on his birthday? Obviously he's going to get it beforehand. Not that I have a problem with Karie not coming along if she has a problem with her brother-in-law."

"Water doesn't possess people to kill each other and cause mayhem."

Lind nodded. "What she said."

"Too late."

"Hey, she's the one bragging. I'm just challenging her to prove it." :classic:

"Who says you're coming along?"

"You really think, after the shit you pulled in Moone, that Gabriel is going to pick you over me? Dream on, kid."

"No, I just have other things to attend to that day. Like attending my hubby's birthday." Karie replies. She gets up and moves when Calamity approaches. "Excuse me."

"I'm saying, no one's guaranteed to be selected until after the list's been posted.

With our luck, we'd probably both get picked, but no guarantees.

And with only 70 gold as a reward, it sounds more like he's trying to hire a...newer class of heroes, like our local Death Mage, or Terrance."

"No, I just have other things to attend to that day. Like attending my hubby's birthday." Karie replies. She gets up and moves when Calamity approaches. "Excuse me."

"Have a good one."

"So you really do have a husband outside of Heroica? Must certainly be awkward for family members to pay for services..." I shake my head.
