Waterbrick Down Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 I look at the battle order and then just move everything accordingly (much easier than copying and pasting) from the last battle round. I can see it being frustrating if you're retyping it every time for a summery, but no one's forcing you to do that remember. Quote
Endgame Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 I just copy+paste the entire round, paste the new battle order over the old one, and roll from there. DLL's tendency to describe the entire party's course of action in the order helps me cut down the time and pain needed to run a round signifigantly, and I can't thank him enough for it. Quote
Brickdoctor Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 I just copy+paste the entire round, paste the new battle order over the old one, and roll from there. I do the same, which leaves me without any actions in the editor from the previous Round, so for me it is actually easier if the party retypes their actions instead of posting, "I repeat". (I'm pasting the new Order over the old action in order to make it easier to tell whose action I've already updated) But usually I'll have two tabs open to the quest, so it's not really that hard to scroll up and see who did what in the previous Round. Quote
Zepher Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 I do it the same way as Flipz and BD, so I agree that I repeat isn't quite as useful, but with Flipz compiling things... I can't really complain. That being said, Flipz, the battles you've helped condense/run are much more complicated than most battles, so in most cases repeats are fine. Quote

Just doing my civic duties, Sir. Also, I meant to post this here: "The Quest I plan on hosting will deal with Economic intrigue between the Hinkwells and the residents of the nationalistic coastal city, Brendenton (changed from Sailor's Haven 30 years ago when Lord Brenden began exerting his influence on the City after its previous Lord's death.) in the Kingdom of Sundestia in the Low Kingdoms (the one who's working title was Autumn Kingdom). The Hinkwells are attempting to conduct business with the government and church of Ennoc (which holds substantial influence n the town), but there's a spanner in the works, and the resident Hinkwell, Dill Hinkwell, aware of the help his family has received in Eubric, calls upon the Heroes of Heroica to help him." To clarify, this is not the Quest I was working on earlier, but rather one I've deemed more doable with my current collection of Lego. I'd be able to start as soon as next weekend if there are any Heroes in the Hall at the time. If not, I'll host it whenever there are more Heroes waiting. I am almost finished with the write-up and I've solidified the characters and the plot. I don't know what level to scale the enemies to, but that's dependent on the level of the the party members. It'll be short, with only probably 3-5 battles, but it could work with players of any level. I've solved my Camera problem as well, and now have access to a regular digital camera, which I'll be sure to have fun with soon. I have a large block of dialog prepared for Sandy, which contains the plot-hook too. I'd like him to OK the plot, as it does involve the Hinkwell Family and the Economics of the Heroica world. My working title is: Insider Trading. ~Insectoid Aristocrat Quote
Zepher Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 Have you officially talked to Sandy yet? I'm sure he'd okay it, but you might want to send in a proposal using the format everyone else does. Quote

This is sorta just my proof of concept, or maybe it's just me feeling obliged to update everyone that I'm actually taking steps toward starting the quest as opposed to simply talking about it, like last time. Also, I want to provide Sandy with an example of a monster. Any suggestions for the level at which to place it? ~Insectoid Aristocrat Edited March 5, 2013 by Dannylonglegs Quote

I wouldn't mind hosting after your quest though if there's only one quest's worth of Heroes in the Hall after Predator to Prey, as one of the villain's actions wouldn't make as much sense versus level one heroes. (not really a problem, but a potential justification for waiting). As I said before, the quest'd work for any level, and I'm glad there are so many newer members, as I think a lower-level quest'd be easier to run than a higher-level one. ~Insectoid Aristocrat Edited March 5, 2013 by Dannylonglegs Quote

Brickdoctor Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 And calculating the Rounds is a lot easier, which is why I think any new QM should start with a quest for players under Level 14. I did that for my first two quests. (granted, the reason I did that was because there were no players in the game over Level 7 when I hosted Quest 4, but I still recommend it) I was calculating the last Arena duel's Rounds, and I go, "Roll the dice, adjust for Level, Row, SP - wait, that's it?". Brickington Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 ready to propose to Sandy Too bad man. Sorry to hear that: I'm flattered, Doc, but I'm already engaged to another man. Sorry to disappoint you. That's to funny. Quote
Scorpiox Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 That's to funny. 'To Funny'? Is that where the wedding is being held? Quote
Brickdoctor Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 Technically the objective complement 'ready' and its infinitive modifier 'to propose to Sandy' are modifying the direct object 'storyline', not the subject 'I'. Quote
Rumble Strike Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 Regarding calculating rounds, am I the only one who writes it all out on paper first? Old school Quote
Endgame Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 I do all of my calculations mentally - probably why I've messed up Galen's gold too many times! Quote
Chromeknight Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 Question for QMs. Where do you get your names from? Names of villains, names of NPCs, names of places (not already mentioned)? Quote
Zepher Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 (edited) Some names: Wren is from the bird and also probably from Catch-22 unintetionally. Doc Daneeka is from Catch-22 intentionally. Guffington is a play on The Great Gatsby, with "ington" at the end because I always use that to make people rich. Felton is from Tom Felton (who know's why?!) Hans from Hans Landa (again, related approximately 0% to the character his name was ripped from), Poletad for obvious reasons- U'Vires and U'Stus are from latin, deriving from truth and justice respectively, Sphinx was summoning the Chimera, XX came from me using that as a filler when planning the quest, and then keeping it, Triad and Bal were both last minute decisions (Triad named after the park, Bal after Bail Organa)... I don't know what else. Haddon is from Captain Haddock in the Tintin comics... Vipera is also latin, though I don't remember exactly what names I mashed up for it- same goes for Triad's species, that's like three latin words jumbled up... So, from all over really! EDIT: I think I've mentioned it before, Vonnetate is named after Vonnegut, who again bears approximately 0 similarities with the character. I could thing of more. Pigley is named after a throw-away line from the show Archer. Russel... I don't quite recall, but he's a reference to something too. McColt just sounded gruff to me. You can see I engage in a huge amount of different medias. Edited March 6, 2013 by Zepher Quote
Waterbrick Down Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 Depends upon my mood, I generally try to aim for something fitting the character as far as surnames go. Minotaur->Swifthorn, Mermen ->Greenscale, etc... Some races have naming conventions associated with them already, the U'kin, Grumplings, Orcs, and Werehounds for example. When creating a new naming scheme I try to base it off of an existing cultural or geographical location. Lucustoids for example, hail from the Desert of Abra which I pictured as having something of a Saudi Arabian influence and thus chose names that sounded like they were from that area. Sometimes I'm feeling punny and I'll try something witty such as basing Rockling names on known geological groups. Other times I'm lazy and just label something in a general form, i.e. Crowkin Thug, Goblin Fisherman, etc. I like having continuity so if there's already an example of something out there, I try to stick to what's already been established.
