TeufelHund Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 (edited) Not sure if I agree with it though...I would have placed at least one of the post 2007-era castles in there... http://www.brickshow.com/10-best-lego-castles-of-all-time Edited August 25, 2011 by TeufelHund Quote
ziljin Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 That's not someone, that's that show Brickshow. Hm they chose Vladek's castle as number 1. No clue about the castle, but I know most people hate the knights. The Shadow/Scorpion Knights are sweet though. Quote
Donut Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 I definitely do not agree with this list. Primary because I do not agree with Fright Knights or Dragon Masters making the list. While I grew up with these sets, I simply find the older sets to have more appeal. My version would look like this: 10. Emperor's Stronghold 9. Forestman's River Fortress 8. King's Mountain Fortress 7. King's Castle 6. Black Monarch's Castle 5. Guarded Inn 4. Black Falcon's Fortress 3. Medieval Market Village 2. Royal Knight's Castle 1. Black Knight's Castle Quote
Gabe Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 Yeah, some odd choices in the Brickshow list. Hemlock stronghold, really? And no ninja representative (which actually was in the castle theme), although Hogwarts is included? The Black Knight's castle (6086) is a notable omission too. Quote
madoka Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 That list is HORRIBLE - it's got to be some sort of joke. I own 63 copies of Vladek's Castle because it went on clearance. There was a reason why it went on clearance. Night Lord's Castle?!?!?! Hemlock Stronghold?!?!?! Firebreathing Fortress?!?!?! King Leo's Castle?!?!?! Wolfpack Tower!?!?!? Outside of Wolfpack Tower, these were some of the worst abominations that Lego ever produced. Quote
Artanis I Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 (edited) Vladek's Dark Fortress is actually a really good castle. Firstly, it's huge and imposing - as castles should be. Secondly it is dark red & black, (a colour scheme I love) - giving it a really cool evil vibe. It's very playable, has stacks of room for placing minifigs on guard. Not too <insert that tiresome argument> build from memory. Can't be bothered thinking about other reasons, haha. Sure, the jelly beans are annoying, but take those away & replace them with a couple more shadow knights and you have an AMAZING set. Well, I like it anyway. I disagree with most of the rest of their list though! Donut's looks a lot better, but I don't know #10, and #3 & #5 aren't castles... Edited August 25, 2011 by Artanis I Quote
Khorne Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 Well, that's a stupid list ! Hogwarts? It's not even part of the castle line! And what's that good-ugly Fright Knight abomination doing there? If it were me making the list, I wouldn't even include King Leo's castle. It's just a bunch of modules stuck on a baseplate, barely worthy of the name 'castle'. The same goes for Hemlock Stronghold. It's not a castle! If you want to make a decent 'Top 10 LEGO Castles of all time', at least include legendary beauties such as 6090 Royal Knights' Castle, 6086 Black Knights' Castle, maybe even 6081 King's Mountain Fortress and if you're feeling really generous and want to include a newer castle, than at least pick this one (7946 King's Castle) over the Vladek one. Donut made a good list, but I wouldn't count the Guarded Inn and the Medieval Market Village as castles . Quote
Elderscroll Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 I don't really think that Valdeks castle should be #1, not compared to the classics. Quote

K-Nut Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 This is a horrible list. I bet it's probably someones personal opinion, not the public's opinion. It would be at least OK if 6086 were in there. I am personally glad I'm not the only one who likes 6082, though. Quote

Donut made a good list, but I wouldn't count the Guarded Inn and the Medieval Market Village as castles . Whoops, mistook for top 10 LEGO castle sets of all time. Hemlock Stronghold isn't really a castle either. 63? how much was it, per piece? Target had them marked 75% off at one point. So that's $25 USD or 2.5 cents per piece! Quote
AndyC Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 Leaving out 8086 is frankly scandalous, it ought to be one of the all time top 3 at least. It's certainly more deserving than Hemlock Stronghold. The only 'notable' thing about that is the claim it's the first appearance of the skellie, despite the fact he appeared in at least 6036 Skeleton Surprise and 6254 Rocky Reef the previous year. Quote
K-Nut Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 Why is everyone picking on 6082? Just kidding. I know not many people like it. I'm just weird that way. But how is Hemlock Stronghold a castle? Quote
TheLegoDr Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 I've never seen Vladek's castle before. It actually looks pretty good. But they definitely forgot a few of the classic beauties that deserved that list much more than what they gave us. Quote
The Blue Brick Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 That is a horrible list, but really they put Hemlock stronghold in there. Quote
Beefbanana Posted August 27, 2011 Posted August 27, 2011 (edited) Hmmmmmm... I certainly wouldnt agree with that, while sets like the fire breathing fortress and night lords castle are good, they aren't good enough to be a top ten. But Vladeks dark fortress is made of many bulky pieces and it has many random gaps in the walls. The same goes for Leo's castle, just a bit better. But it didn't even mention 6085 black monarchs castle or 6086 black knights castle... Edited August 27, 2011 by Beefbanana Quote
Runamuck Posted August 27, 2011 Posted August 27, 2011 (edited) This list seems like a bit of a mess. You could almost suspect they, the writers, only had these castles and not much else. Let me take a look on the castles on the list. 6080 King’s Castle It’s a good castle, but it has always struck me as a bit dull. Compared to Black Monarch’s Castle, which has a very similar layout, it seems blocky and simple. I do though like the figures in King’s better; the figures in Monarch’s have terrible color coordination, red pants and blue torsos looks odd in my opinion. 6082 Fire Breathing Fortress I like it, but it has some problems. The dragon head looks out of place. The castle has a good shape, but the interior is only a dragon cave that’s not even wide enough for the dragon to stand properly. 6073 Knight’s Castle A fine castle, but it’s one of the smaller ones. The red gate looks kind of weird in my opinion. 6075 Wolfpack Tower A good set, but maybe a bit too small to really be a full “castle”. 6046 Hemlock Stronghold I don’t own this set. I’m probably more accepting of the late 90’s castles than many people, but this set looks weird, and it’s far from the only castle set with a catapult for defense. Again, it’s probably too small to really be a castle. 6098 King Leo’s Castle This castle has loads of problems, holey walls, no backside, and a bloody hole under the castle’s main building! Lots and lots of gimmicks. 4709 Hogwarts Castle Yes it’s a castle and probably a fine set (although the release time could maybe make this statement wrong), but it is not part of the castle theme. I think most people would expect this list to only have sets from the castle theme on it. 6097 Night Lord’s Castle I own it and I like it. It is very different from most castles, and that is why I like it. While I think that it is a good set, I do acknowledge that it has its faults, like missing some doors, and it should probably not be on a list of the top 10 best castles. 375/6075 Yellow Castle Genesis! It’s a fine castle, I like the figures, but it has its problems. First and foremost it’s very old and feels like it. It opens in a weird way. Personally I’m not too fond of the build, you get nowhere fast and the plans are a bit hard to follow. It also suffers from the fact that the horse hadn’t been invented yet. 8877 Vladek’s Dark Fortress I don’t own this set, but from all pictures I have seen this looks like a really good castle. It could probably use a figure or two more, but otherwise it looks really really good. Edited August 29, 2011 by Runamuck Quote
Captain Blockbeard Posted August 27, 2011 Posted August 27, 2011 I agree with everyone else to disagree with that list of top ten Lego castles. First off, probably any of the other medium to large sized Forestmen structures are better than 6046 Hemlock Stronghold. Also, the Knight's Castle is so similar to the King's Castle in general shape, that I probably would have replaced it with the Black Falcon Outpost. However, I would agree with their choice of 6082 Fire Breathing Fortress and 6098 King Leo's Castle. Since the list is not limited to castles (due to their inclusion of a Forestmen set), I would probably insert the Dwarven Mine somewhere in the standings. I would also probably replace the 1984 King's Castle with the 2010 King's Castle. Quote
BrickMan7 Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 Hey all! Thanks for the feedback regarding the Top 10 Castles we posted. I, Jason, did not personally write this. A company from Germany wanted some extra marketing exposure and so they offered up this list for us and we posted it. I would agree that perhaps there are some omissions such as the ones you've stated. For the most part we really wanted to get a conversation started about this and it seems we have. I've never read a Top 10 list that everyone agreed on as that's what make them so much fun. We'd like to do more of this type of stuff if any of you are interested in writing for us on occasion (with compensation for your time, of course). Some other ideas we have for top 10 lists include space vehicles, star wars sets, ships etc... Jason Quote
Scorpiox Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 I disagree with this list. What about Trolls mountain fortress? (Trolls ), the Kingdoms Castle? The Black Knight's Castle? For me this is getting close to the 10 worst castles of all time! Quote
Jareth Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 I had my problems because I didn't own a lot of the castles on the list, and perhaps that's why some of my choices didn't make the top 10, because the writer didn't own them. The yellow castle needed to be on there, not just because of it's theme spawning ability, but because it was a great set for pieces at the time. It had lots of 1x1 and 1x3 bricks which were very rare at the time AND new angle slope pieces. The real crime here is the lack of "Black Falcon's Fortress" But again, perhaps the writer never had one. Quote

I agree with all of your choices...truly FAR better selections...but, why does everybody have a hate-on for Vladek's fortress? I personally thought it was one of the few redeeming things about the whole KKII line. Sure, a couple of goofy elements to it but, the overall structure was fairly decent and it had a rockin' evil colour scheme. Target had them marked 75% off at one point. So that's $25 USD or 2.5 cents per piece! HOLY CRAP! Man, I WISH we'd had sale prices like that up here in Canada! I would have been ALL OVER THAT, too! Wow. I agree with everyone else to disagree with that list of top ten Lego castles. First off, probably any of the other medium to large sized Forestmen structures are better than 6046 Hemlock Stronghold. I would also probably replace the 1984 King's Castle with the 2010 King's Castle. I would definitely NOT include those two on a 'top ten best castles' list. No way. I have both of them and IMO, they were both a disappointment, lacking greatly in many ways, especially when compared to some of the only slightly older sets. Example: Compare "King Leo's Castle" to "Royal Knight's Castle" and you'll quickly see how poorly King Leo's fares in that comparison. I disagree with this list. What about Trolls mountain fortress? (Trolls ), the Kingdoms Castle? The Black Knight's Castle? For me this is getting close to the 10 worst castles of all time! "Troll's Mountain Fortress" had some cool figs and an 'okay' layout but, honestly, it was kind of weak as both a fortress AND a 'castle' set. Buy it for the figs and part-out the pieces. LOL I had my problems because I didn't own a lot of the castles on the list, and perhaps that's why some of my choices didn't make the top 10, because the writer didn't own them. I personally think that "how good a set was at the time" shouldn't really be the basis for whether or not it makes a "top ten best" list. IMO, that list should be reserved for those sets that STILL rock, sets that 'stood the test of time' and still kick butt. IMO, the 'yellow castle' doesn't cut it. Sure, from a nostalgia perspective, lots of folks might want it on there...but, with the yellow walls, 'meh' design, stickers and brick-built horses, I just don't think it had any staying power. Heck, the only set that *I* think still stands up from that initial release period, is the "Knights Procession" set, simply because it's a bunch of knights with a cart. Period. Nothing to really 'mess up' or 'go out of style', except maybe the wheels on the cart. And, quite honestly, using the argument that "maybe the author didn't have the sets" as a defense for such crappy choices, just doesn't cut it. There were a PILE of the classic sets that *I* didn't/don't have, but that doesn't mean I don't recognize just how superior they are to many others that I DO own. If one is going to make a comprehensive 'top ten best' list, they should at least do some research...otherwise, make it a 'top ten best sets that I own' list. Edited September 3, 2011 by Ogre Quote
