jedi1878 Posted August 27, 2011 Posted August 27, 2011 Hey Star Wars fans, I have the Imperial Star Destroyer still in a sealed box and with the original shipping box. I would like to know what kind of grey my set is without having to open the set. Is this possible? There is still a white sticker attached to the original shipping box. It mentions that it is version 46. Kind regards, jedi1878 Quote
Velika314 Posted August 28, 2011 Posted August 28, 2011 I believe the exterior of the set is mainly light grey. Websites like bricklink have information on parts and colors of all sorts of different lego sets. You can check out 10030's inventory here Quote
tppytel Posted August 28, 2011 Posted August 28, 2011 I believe the exterior of the set is mainly light grey. That's not what he's asking. The 10030 was produced in both old light gray and new bluish light gray over the course of its run. Most of them were all old light gray, but some of the later ones were all bley and I've heard of sets with mostly old but a few new pieces as well. I was researching the same question back when I was buying my ISD earlier this year. But I never found references to any indications on the outside of the box or the shipping carton about the type of gray used in the set. That doesn't mean there aren't any, just that I didn't Google up anything. What does seem to be true is that if your set has the earlier, glued-softcover instructions, then it's definitely an all old gray set. But the ones with the newer, sprial-bound instructions could still be any of the gray variations. And none of that helps you if you don't want to break the seals on the box in the first place. Hopefully someone will post any external indicators here, if they do in fact exist. Quote
Destroydacre Posted August 28, 2011 Posted August 28, 2011 I can't help with the stuff you mentioned, but check the postmark on the box. I believe Lego changed their color palette in 2004 so if the postmark is pre-2004, then you definitely have an old gray ISD. If it's after you could have either version, a bley one being more likely the farther after 2004 you get. Quote
cavegod Posted August 28, 2011 Posted August 28, 2011 i would open it and check that way when you sell it you can state which colour it is, if you don't want to open it then just sell as is. Quote
drdavewatford Posted August 28, 2011 Posted August 28, 2011 As soon as you open the box the resale value falls. It would therefore be crazy to open it up just to check what kind of grey you have. Unless of course you plan to build it, in which case go ahead, and enjoy the set - it's spectacular ! Dr. D. Quote
jedi1878 Posted August 28, 2011 Author Posted August 28, 2011 I just check the production time and it was 070111. So I think this set will be a bluish one Quote
cavegod Posted August 28, 2011 Posted August 28, 2011 i don't think thats right it won't have been produced this year. Quote

Unless of course you plan to build it, in which case go ahead, and enjoy the set - it's spectacular ! Dr. D. I wonder though if the fact that the model is confirmed to be all old grey would trump that the seals are broken as long as all bags are sealed, as those pieces are getting to be quite rare in new condition, and that is the way the set was "intended" to be. Most of the sets produced should be the bluish gray variety based on the production time (2004-2008 versus 2002-2004), so the old gray variety would be rarer. I guess the mixture of old and new gray is the rarest of them, but it's probably less aesthetically pleasing, so my guess is that it's worth the least. If anyone has access to sealed boxes of both the old gray and bluish gray ISD'd they might be able to find a weight difference from the different type of manual in the sets as well as miniscule difference in the weight of bricks from using a different ABS mixture, which would be magnified by the fact that there are 3000 bricks in this set. jedi1878 Posted August 28, 2011 Author Posted August 28, 2011 i don't think thats right it won't have been produced this year. It's an American date (YearMonthDay principle) Quote
bensl Posted August 28, 2011 Posted August 28, 2011 I just check the production time and it was 070111. So I think this set will be a bluish one bummer. just cos i am a good bloke i will take it off your hands. i'll even pay for shipping. Quote
jedi1878 Posted August 28, 2011 Author Posted August 28, 2011 bummer. just cos i am a good bloke i will take it off your hands. i'll even pay for shipping. If I would sell it you. How much would you pay for the set? I know it is quite an expensive set. Quote
mrfootball Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 If I would sell it you. How much would you pay for the set? I know it is quite an expensive set. I've been looking to buy a UCS Star Destroyer and I like the 'bley' version. Would you take $400 (US)? Quote
Brickdoctor Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 It's an American date (YearMonthDay principle) American dates are in mm/dd/yyyy format. Though you are right, it's probably in the format you mentioned. If it was produced in '07, it would be bley. Quote
Fallenangel Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 It's an American date (YearMonthDay principle) Among other countries, the yyyy/mm/dd format is the one used in Korea and China. So this set would have been produced on January 11th, 2007. Probably bley. $400 for this would be a steal - according to Bricklink the average price looks to be around $1500. Quote
AndyC Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 $400 for this would be a steal - according to Bricklink the average price looks to be around $1500. That's crazy, I picked one up MISB for £300 about two years ago. In fact if you look at the past 6 months worth of sales on Bricklink, they aren't generally going for anything like that much. Quote
jedi1878 Posted August 29, 2011 Author Posted August 29, 2011 I bought this set in on eBay from the USA. That 's why I thought it was an American date. About the price that was on offer. It is below my valuation of this set. I follow the bricklink and eBay prices and they still go up. For the moment I don't need to sell this set. Only when I get a ridiculous offer I may consider it. Lobot Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 If the box is in nice condition it should be worth around £500-£600. It will be interesting to see if the release of the Executor has any impact on their average value in the next couple of years, I have a suspicion that the value may drop slightly, but not much. I'd love one, but I'm saving up for the Executor at the moment! Quote
ReflectioN Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 I can understand someone wanting to sell this set, because it has a high value, but... I seriously would reconsider selling this beauty. I have one in the new color grey and I honestly consider it to be the best LEGO set ever. Even better than the UCS Falcon imho. Quote
TheDarkness Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 I bought two of these and two of the original Death Stars when Lego had a clearance, and sold them off for a tidy profit not long after. I seriously regret not keeping one, as I would love to add one to my collection and now the prices are insane! Quote
ISDAvenger Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 I was able to buy a used one for $450 shipped. I was lucky to find one that cheap and the seller was most kind in giving me that type of deal. Quote
