Burf2000 Posted September 20, 2011 Posted September 20, 2011 Indeed! MindSensors.com and Hitechnic.com are the ones to look for. I think the MindSensors are a bit too "non-Lego" if you understand what I mean. Hitechnic makes sensors which basically have the same shape as the standard Lego NXT sensors and therefor can be fitted alike. If you want to take NXT robotics to the next step, MindSensors sure has some cool stuff! There is also another company (dexter) that do GPS, themo and all types of advance sensors. I would agree with you comment, to stay with Lego, go Hitechnic, if you want to do some awesome stuff, go MindSensor. They also do custom NXT cables cheap. The PS2 controller is recommended Quote

jojoguy10 Posted September 20, 2011 Posted September 20, 2011 Indeed Now you mention it, I remember visiting the Dexter website. They have some pretty advanced stuff. Yup. I beta tested a lot of those sensors, and they're pretty fun to play with! Especially for the advanced NXT user. jojoguy10 Quote
1980-Something-Space-Guy Posted September 21, 2011 Posted September 21, 2011 Ahhh, the good times. I remember I played a lot with Lego mindstorms in my childhood and my pre-teens. Unfortunately, I don't see myself getting back into mindstorms any time soon. However, it gave me some good times, and I certainly hope that new generations are able to experience the same good, productive times I experienced. Quote

jojoguy10 Posted September 22, 2011 Posted September 22, 2011 Do you? how can people get involved in that? Well, this was when they were just getting started, but I just Emailed them asking if they needed a beta tester :-). It was pretty fun, but then I had to stop (because of a summer job). But I hope to start again. jojoguy10 Quote
Catweazle Posted September 23, 2011 Posted September 23, 2011 I will agree that the motors are huge and a poor shape, and the connectors are very limiting, bring back RCX's u can use multiplexors, but they, and all types of sensors are way to expensive to really start experiments Quote
Follows Closely Posted October 17, 2011 Posted October 17, 2011 My 10 year old has asked for a NXT 2.0 for her birthday. Is there any books that you have found to be a good resource? Quote
Jim Posted October 17, 2011 Author Posted October 17, 2011 (edited) My 10 year old has asked for a NXT 2.0 for her birthday. Is there any books that you have found to be a good resource? That's nice!! I do have two (actually three) suggestions: Winning Design! Lego Mindstorms NXT (deals with proper robot design) http://www.amazon.co...n/dp/1430229640 The Art of Lego Mindstorms NXT-G programming (deals with programming the robot, based on NXT-G) http://www.amazon.co...18862008&sr=1-1 This is also a nice book for inspiration...especially if you have two NXT units Creating Cool Mindstorms NXT Robots http://www.amazon.co...n/dp/1590599667 I am assuming your 10 year old will be programming in NXT-G instead of uploading different firmware and writing C code or something If you own an iPad, all of these books are available for download on Amazon, for your Kindle for iPad app. Get her the NXT unit and the first two books and she will be a happy camper for a long time Edited October 17, 2011 by Gekke Ted Quote

I had book #1 in my cart already, I will add the others as well. Although I have not written in C since 2005. Quote
Jim Posted October 17, 2011 Author Posted October 17, 2011 Thank you for the quick reply. I had book #1 in my cart already, I will add the others as well. No problem! These books provide a nice collection, some fun to read theory about robot design, a wel written book on using the programming environment and some nice ideas for robots to create (bipeds are cool). You are right about my 10 year old, but I may dabble with it as well. Although I have not written in C since 2005. Of course daddy gets to play with it as well Quote
Burf2000 Posted October 17, 2011 Posted October 17, 2011 Thanks for the book suggestions to, I have a few but never actually get round to reading them. Was not happy with this one though, http://www.amazon.co.uk/LEGO-MINDSTORMS-NXT-Thinking-Robots/dp/1593272162/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1318880069&sr=8-4 All building and no help on coding or anything!
