Pauger Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 On the highest yellow beam on the chopper, there is a sticker showing something and a pole reverser handle just above it. So there must me a gearbox. My guess is four different outputs: 1: Opening the cargo bay (the gray panel at the back). 2: Winch. 3: Landing gear. 4: Rotors. It seems like there is a couple of mLAs there as well. I fdo like the chopper Quote

allanp Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 The shape of the motor in the axle, the gearing going to it and the bulkyness of the axle suggest to me a couple things, all of which might be completely wrong It suggests to me that it is a drive motor that is very fast. The shape of the outer case only really makes sence if it is the shape of the motor inside of it (a very common shape for motors). IF this is true then there does not seem to be much room, if any, for internal gear reduction. Being 4 studs wide (or tall in the picture) suggests quite a large internal motor. The gearing going up to the motor, can also be traced downwards to the same level as the differencial (if it has one). Other reduction gearing can also be seen, there looks like two stages of reduction after the differencial, not just the one stage found in the hub that is the same as the unimog. There is also room in that huge axle for more reduction gearing. I could be wrong but I hope i'm right, I like lots of fast spinning gears and if I am right, could this mean a return for belt drives and so on Quote

It looks like a lot of fun to play with though, so I might pick it up on discount. Still want to see more detailed photos of the chopper, but it's looking very promising. Quote

Paul Boratko Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 (edited) From watching the short video of the 9398, it certainly moves and controls much better than I expected, but then again my expectations were based on what the current power functions motors could do... I think that this would have looked much cleaner if it just used the Halloween Black/Orange Combo throughout the entire vehicle, the white rear end just looks out of place...I also hate stickers... dhc6twinotter Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 (edited) Those new motors are pretty interesting, although a bit larger than I had hoped. Nice to see the steering has return-to-center. Looking at the motors used for steering, it looks like the servo motor is separate from the return to center mechanism. It looks like the two pieces fit together with a few pins. The suspension is interesting. I don't see any panhard bar, but I guess the 6L links on each side, combined with the torque tubes, keep the axles centered. It seems like this design would create some binding, particularly when the axle is at full droop on one side and completely compressed on the other. I guess it must work ok if the designers approved it. The color scheme is a bit crazy, but I'm liking those white 11x3 panels as well. I've been waiting a while for those, and they would be great for an upcoming moc. I'm looking forward to new news about the drive motor. That helicopter looks fantastic! Has translated what the pr-guy is say as, that there are two propulsion motors and also 2 steering motors. But I might hoperfully get to see on the 18/2/2012, doing legoworld 2012 in copenhagen, and one thing for sure i bring a DSLR and spend lots of time inspecting it, and getting details out of it. If it showen to the public:-D The guy from the video says that the crawler has AWD, all wheel steering and uses "two powerful motors so that the trail is no problem". Hey does not specify for what function these two motors are used though, I think they maybe have two motors for driving and another one for steering...... Quote

I guess if you want to, you could just create a new frame and leave the old one for pieces, so i see no need for the complaints about the color scheme. And if you have ever looked at dune racing trucks (or whatever they're called) they have paint jobs that start at one color and have some detail turning into another color as a solid color for the back of the body, so it's normal, only im not sure if Lego has done the body color in the correct way, but we still have time for more pictures. And I hope that they decide to print the side pieces instead of stickers, stickers would be the biggest pain since its two pieces with two stickers that create a pattern, that would be easy to mess up, so I hope for printed shells. tduby Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 I just think Lego messed up on the body! When the Unimog came out one of the big reasons people loved it so much was the new orange color. I can see why some are happy about the new white panels but I really dislike the white part on the truck it should have been all white or the two tone orange black. as it stands now the red black orange white and gray trying to lok like chrome is just blah. and as noted by several people I too hate stickers I have very poor hand eye coordination and have never put on a sticker straight in my life and now for this model to look half way decent one is going to have to line up stickers on multiple panels. What I don't get is Lego already has molds paid for why they don't have a wider varity of model colors is confusing I saw on TV there huge automated wharehouse surely a little more inventory would not be all that much more to maintain. one of the great things about lego is you can build anything your way but its getting to the point where they limit your choices to black red and yellow. to end on a positive note the new motors seem to function awesome and they will be a great addtion to MOCS for years to come Quote

I also think that stickers are a good thing here because if I want to use those white panels in a space shuttle for instance, I would not want to have a giant "4X4" printed in red on the side, so it's good that you can just peel them off. YEY for more white pieces! The helicopter is looking better here than in the original pictures. Can't wait to see what functionalty the main rotor has. I wonder if it has both cyclic and collective control. I hope so as these functions can be achived even without all that bulky rotor mechanism. I asked for a very fast L-motor and a servo motor and now it seems we have those (hopefully the L-motor won't have ANY internal reduction) so maybe we'll get longer pneumatics and synchromesh gears coming in a range of sizes in the coming years .
