I've never imagined that anyone could think that way about the LOTR films. They were perfectly made and I don't drink red bull. LOTR is more for adults but children love it as well. Star wars the original trilogy wasn't made for children but they love building the lego sets from the films.

The first movie was almost 3 hours the extended version was almost 4 hours, way overdrawn, as for star wars most of the OT sets are got by adults, and it does not matter kids have not seen the movies, they watch the tv series which makes them buy the CW sets.

All the licence themes die with in a couple of years, the only one that has a chance is the superheroes theme due to the animated tv series.

I don't see LOTR becoming anywhere near as successful as SW, either. I can imagine it will be more successful than themes like PoTC and Prince of Persia, and probably around the same level as HP.

At any rate, perhaps such discussions belong in the LOTR thread instead...?

The LOTR films were epic and done very well I wouldn't say they were perfect. No film is ever perfect. I watch all of them at least a few times every year and always enjoy them for the most part. Peter Jackson and his team probably did a better job of these films than any other group of people on this planet could but they definitely not perfect. I guess with these LOTR sets will also come die hard LOTR fans like you who see no fault in anything with the LOTR game stamped on it. :classic:

Goodbye Kingdoms. It's been a good run. I hope you enjoy your now home at that "medieval village raid" in the sky. :cry_sad:

I hope to see a speedy return of a yellow-skinned castle theme. And by speedy, that probably means late 2013 at the earliest. Time to start a-MOC'n, I guess.

Ok, so... Do you guys remember what my last question to Lego was?

"@LEGO_Group Question: will the 10223 Kingdoms Joust be the only release for Kingdoms in 2012?"

Here is the short answer they gave me: "@gustavobrauner Yes"

So that's it guys.

No Kingdoms in 2012! Nothing! This is so sad!!!

Not everyone is a big SW fan like you. Personally SW is OK to me but I have never been a big fan. Now LOTR on the other hand is like the perfect fantasy franchise for me. Now, I am not saying one is better than the other but, that they are just different. Also, when looking at the Helms Deep set I see a lot of detail in the design of the wall and in the overall set and I would like to point out we still haven't seen the Orc workshop set yet which, could very well be an exclusive set like Diagon Alley. All I am saying is that I wouldn't judge the theme to harshly yet when all we have seen is the first wave of sets and just preliminary pictures at that. :classic:

Im not really a big fan, I do like it and collect some sets, however. Just look at how well SW has done and its longevity and its pretty clear that no theme will ever top it. I don't know if you've ever been to(I haven't, BTW) or have seen on TV any SW convention, but the fans are rabid(in a good way ). I hope LotR does well, because I will get some, mainly for the figs.

Agreed! LotR is really a very good replacement. Absolut fantastic minifigure possibilities...

I do know no theme where we could get so many different main characters, military forces and other folks.

sounds like generic response, I hope LOTR fails and is one and done. :classic:

Just isn't my thing and yes I am serious in just lasting one year. I have not seen the images yet but if I want overly detailed figs and sets I buy SW. I like my castle generic historic and beauty in the design of a set. Spectacular is a point of view what some view as amazing others view as average. I don't think there will ever be a license theme that ever touches Star Wars IMO.

I prefer classic LEGO themes over a license any day. Compare POTC to Pirates, it has boring set designs, too many repeat characters, poor sellers that ended up in the bargain basket everywhere. The set designs were all very poor and lacking.

Regular Pirates sets got clearanced as well. Every theme has clearances.

The Lord of the Rings theme isn't going to be a "one and done" one. Even if the first wave sells poorly, it will be too late for there not to be at least a second wave - there will be a LotR trilogy wave in the summer and a Hobbit wave a few months later. The next couple waves' sets will undoubtedly have been planned by that time, as well. If the first couple waves' sets somehow sell abysmally, they might cancel the line prematurely, but otherwise I think you can be assured of at least two years' worth of sets at a bare minimum. It's not some single summer movie theme like Prince of Persia or Speed Racer; there are three huge movies already in existence in this franchise, and two more movies coming out a year apart from one another, and there's much more interest in all of them than there ever was in either the Prince of Persia or Speed Racer movies. I think it's likelier this theme will get at least five or six waves over at least a three-year period, if not more.

Now, whether that's a good thing or not is obviously up to each of us to decide for himself or herself, and I do understand many people just don't care for licensed themes, regardless of their fondness for whatever movie or other franchise is being licensed. But like it or not, I think it's safe to say LotR/The Hobbit is going to be around as a LEGO theme for at least a little while - longer than Kingdoms has been, anyway, to use the most suitable example.

I totally agree with you on all of that. And personally I do not understand why people could be negative towards LOTR. If it comes down to collecting sets we will get some great sets, if it comes down to MOCing I can already see some great new parts for future MOCs, and if it comes down to just loving historically based sets we already have MVR, MV, and the entire Kingdoms line so I don't see why Lego cannot appease the other side of the aisle with some fantasy sets based off of LOTR.

I guess to me complaining about your personal preferences is kind of pointless because there is no way that Lego can appease everybody's personal likes and dislikes. I really honestly wasn't all that impressed with Kingdoms because there were no dragons to go with the dragon knights and I almost hated that awful, bright, fire-engine red that Lego used for the lion knights. It came off so jellybeany too me and I really didn't like it. That being said Lego has done a much better job with the Fantasy Era, Kingdoms, and now the LOTR than they were doing with the horrible Knights Kingdom 2 in 2004 so, I will give them some good credit and for us fantasy fans this is a huge opportunity for us to collect Lego sets based off of one of the best if not The best medieval fantasy series of all time, The Lord of the Rings.

I'm quite shocked for the lack of support regarding the LOTR theme. So many of you say it won't last apart from a rare few but what you must understand is outside this forum LOTR has just as much fans has star wars has or maybe more. I predict the theme will last just over 10 years.

I feel that LOTR might be a sleeping giant and drags a whole new following to Lego....LOTR Fanatic's !

Like one of my sources, a collectable toys retailer and LOTR fanatic can't wait to get his hands on these sets....so if there is a mega fan base, then Lego might have made their best choice of a license in years. :classic:

Maybe if it didn't swoop in and seemingly kill off a really really beloved theme like Kingdoms, people would generally be less hostile to it. :)

I like LOTR personally, but I don't like insanely inflated prices and fleshy minifigures - and I most certainly don't like Kingdoms ending.

So many of you say it won't last apart from a rare few but what you must understand is outside this forum LOTR has just as much fans has star wars has or maybe more.

Are you basing this statement on some kind of hidden facts or purely your own level of fanboism? I don't doubt that LOTR has a very strong following, but I strongly doubt that ANY fantasy/sci-fi brand has as strong a following as Star Wars. But feel free to present me with facts stating otherwise.

I definitely agree with you about LOTR having as much or more fans than Star Wars but I just don't see this theme doing as well as a building toy set. I think Star Wars lends itself much better to being made into Lego sets. I predict the LOTR/Hobbit sets will not last any longer than 3-5 years at most.

Thanks I haven't laughed so hard in a long time, I will own a every single lego set ever made before lotr even has 1/10th the number of fans star wars does.

It will not do well because 1, its mostly adult fans, and 2 because there is no on going media.

What I find funny is that people are on here still thinking more Kingdoms sets are coming out. They might have an exclusive or two but no regular wave of sets is coming for a while. TLG moved the Kingdoms line off of the shelves awfully fast. I feel bad for those who didn't get the sets they wanted. The last wave was on shelves for only 6 months.

LOTR will do very well but I do think it will be limited to 3 - 4 years. Once the movies are out on DVD/Blu-ray the line will fade from the store shelves.

However, it is possible generic castle may make a return in just a couple of years time and run along side LOTR after the original excitement of LOTR dies down.

The things about LOTR is that it never fades away or gets boring, even though the film series ended 9 years ago many people still rewatch the films and read the books and enjoy them just as much when they were first out and will buy anything relating to the series. Star wars hasn't had a film out for a while but lego still release sets from the original series and fans buy them.

I love LotR as do you, but Star Wars does still has the clone wars tv series which is a big draw for kids; yet has the diehard adults. Though I know there is a large following of LotR, I don't believe it's larger than Star Wars. I don't think it will become a better line than Star Wars, that line has been going for years and I don't see it stopping soon.

It is possible that Lotr could last 10 or so years, but I think that as little as three is probable too. Depends on how large of a following will buy LEGO. I think DaleDVM's idea is most likely. LotR lasting 3-4 years, with castle coming back after a couple years.

I absolutely support the LotR theme. If Star Wars never existed, the LotR films would be #1 for me. Only time will tell as to how successful LEGO LotR will be. I think the line will be very successful regardless of whether it goes 3 years or 10 years.

The thing is, this is a forum for die-hard Kingdoms fans, pissed off at LotR for axing Castle. For the opposite viewpoint, glorifying LotR, there is the LotR thread. And its better this way, rather than both camps clashing in the LotR forum.

I would expect a solid run of 3 years, with anything more a big success.
