DaleDVM Posted May 12, 2012 Posted May 12, 2012 Wow this was a total shock to me. I had no previous warning at all. My inside informants are getting lax... This is a great battlepack with a baseplate (value $5 USD) and some 4x4 plates to boot. I will be getting 10 or so of these. I didn't really want to make these two factions so large but now at these prices I cannot resist. I will be getting mine next month with my Brickworld 30% off discount. Quote
KristofBD Posted May 12, 2012 Posted May 12, 2012 Does anybody know if there will be other sets? It seems strange to only release a chess set... Quote
TheLegoDr Posted May 12, 2012 Posted May 12, 2012 This is a huge surprise for sure. I was not expecting anything Kingdoms related for quite a while. I love the two factions and have built them up quite a bit. As excited as I would normally have been for this set, I would rather focus spending my money on the new licenses instead. If this came out last year, I would have for sure bought a couple. But this year I just don't have the budget for this and the other sets. Unfortunately, it is too little too late. Bring on LOTR and SuperHeroes! Otherwise, it is a great collection of figures. I don't need yet another king and queen, or more jesters, but it still a great figure pack for sure. Quote
Lomn Posted May 12, 2012 Posted May 12, 2012 Does anyone know if it's the worse quality battlepack minifigures for the chess? Quote
LRDark Posted May 12, 2012 Posted May 12, 2012 Does anyone know if it's the worse quality battlepack minifigures for the chess? Hello, welcome to the forum I would imagine that the plastic used in it will be standard, although I don't know what the other chess sets were in the past. I'm just hoping there's no pink on the Red Kingdom's torsos and that the figures aren't glued. Quote
Nagyzee Posted May 12, 2012 Posted May 12, 2012 I seem to remember that the Pirates Chess Set was Chinese plastic. Hopefully this won't be. Despite my reservations this is in the end a very fairly priced battle pack. At the US price at least. We'll see the rest. To be honest I don't really see the rationale though. Kingdoms has been effectively discontinued, and I don't see this set becoming a successful seller now that interest in Kingdoms has faded and LOTR is the hot topic. It feels like as if this set arrived quite a bit late. Quote

It feels like as if this set arrived quite a bit late. I do agree that the timing is odd and I think this set would have done better if released with last years wave of Kingdoms sets. That being said, I still think the old adage of better late than never is applicable here. The set is an excellent army builder for our existing Kingdoms collections. Personally, I will still be building up my lion knight and dragon knight armies long after the themes premature discontinuation. To my knowledge, there is no other chess set on the S@H so it still fills a useful gap in the market. Quote
Flea Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 this is a really nice release. I hope it will be avaiable in Europe too. I really like the baseplate, it can be used for many creations based on forts ^^ Quote
WhiteFang Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 I am really very excited about it. Am I the only one out there who is happy with the new Kingdoms Chess set? This set will be very useful for army builders and I will be getting a couple of it even though I had gotten through those battlepacks earlier. I am looking forward to it and it is a great pity that the Kingdoms might eventually come to an end. Thank you for the surprising news. Quote

I find it strange that people are frowning upon this one given the absolutely amazing price. The battle packs don't come close to this for value. I'll probably pick up at least two of these as a farewell to Kingdoms. Quote

Not only that, this set will make a fine addition into my current collection of chess sets that I owned, except for the Pirates which I gave it a miss. It is worth the value. Now I got to wait to find out what is the local price in my country. Quote
kermit Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 Two words to describe this : OMG.........EPIC. I was just about to get some lion knights for my castle on bricklink . This will definitely be bought mostly if not only as a battle pack. With the cheapest asking price on bricklink being $3 USD, that comes up to $84. Where as with this set its only $50 USD and that does not include the base plate, weapons and small plates. Someone previously asked if the minifigures will be glued, why is that? and have previous chess sets came with glued minifigures? I wonder if that base plate has studs below to allow it to stick to a large flat base plate? I also will definitely be mocking this by building a castle on the base plate. Quote
LRDark Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 Someone previously asked if the minifigures will be glued, why is that? and have previous chess sets came with glued minifigures? I was wondering if they'd be glued on account of the Vikings chess set having some parts glued, or so I have read. I wouldn't know fully though, since this will be my first Lego chess set purchase. I'm quite excited for it either way, as I love army building, yet don't have enough disposable income to support that through Bricklink. This thing will be fantastic Quote

This thing will be fantastic I hope its not glued , but since its a building set there wouldn`t be much to build if the figures are glued. Then again why would they glue it in the first place? Quote

Then again why would they glue it in the first place? I don't know, I just read on Brickipedia that parts were glued. It might've just been the board or something; I don't really remember. Someone like Whitefang who owns everything might be able to give a real answer EDIT: After looking at the Viking Chess Set on Peeron, it seems as though the rooks are glued and the queens' torsos are glued to their dresses. I suspect it is to combat the pieces from detaching when they're making a move. Edited May 13, 2012 by LRDark Quote

Venunder Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 (edited) Lego do not have this set 853373 listed in the UK. Is it USA specific? Or a fake? Edited May 13, 2012 by Venunder Quote

I can't tell, but it looks like the Green "King" doesn't have a black beard like 7955 does. Also, now that I know what their "Queen" looks like, I'm going to have to change it on my own Kingdom's chess board... Ohh well. Or a fake? I can't imagine Lego listing a fake set in their shop Edited May 13, 2012 by LRDark Quote
Mencot Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 Lego do not have this set 853373 listed in the UK. Is it USA specific? Or a fake? Hey I don´t think its fake when its in the official Lego shop but its only listed in US and Canada. I contacted Lego about this yesterday to ask if it will be available in Europe(Finland), will see what they will answer, probably tomorrow or tuesday I can expect an answer Quote
Nightshroud99 Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 This is great! I was just looking at my paltry Kingdoms army and thinking about how I wished I had more. Now I can have a ton! Quote

I suspect it is to combat the pieces from detaching when they're making a move. In the Viking chess set, only those brick-built chess pieces are glued. However, I bought many sets in the past and apparently some batches are non-glued while the later batches are glued... At that time, I was just a closet collector, so I didn't go to the Internet to search for answer. It didn't bother me as the minifigures are my main concern and these are not glued at all. Quote
JackJonespaw Posted May 14, 2012 Posted May 14, 2012 Isn't this Chess set already out?!? I saw it on Saturday at my local Lego store. Quote
eldiano Posted May 14, 2012 Posted May 14, 2012 I think this is awesome but I am a Lego castle and Kingdoms entusiast, hopefuly we will see this in Europe also (i already contacted Lego about this set, we´ll see what they will say) This one has some collector value but the most will buy this for the minifigs. Lyichir you can´t compare this to that giant castle chess set, this one has nothing on that. Yea that set is more like it. So many minifigs!!! This is AWESOME!!! Great chance to get an idea of what the Queen and King from the Dragon Knights look a like, good to know this line is still alive! Quote
Ceroknight Posted May 14, 2012 Posted May 14, 2012 (edited) Not a big fan of the new chess set. When I think of a Lego chess set, I think of something grand and amazing and those castle parts aren't even lego! Edited May 14, 2012 by Ceroknight Quote
Vindicare Posted May 14, 2012 Posted May 14, 2012 Isn't this Chess set already out?!? I saw it on Saturday at my local Lego store. This makes no sense... If you saw the set at your local LEGO store, why are you asking if it's out? Quote
