"One more question: have your spies met anyone who claims to have traded with the Lion Knights? There's a high possibility that the Lion Knights just steal whatever they need, but there still might be people who've traded goods with them."

"As a matter of fact, they have. The Hinckwells insist that the Lion Knights aren't here to wage war, despite the fact that they've brought enough men to subjugate the majority of the Free Islands."

De'kra clicks, "I think person who told heroes and I about lion knights said one Lion Knight mention Crownies. Remember other heroes? He had dragon theme I think." Will the others remember this encounter at their first town?

De'kra reminds the group of the dragon themed knight they met so long ago, the one who told them that the dagger was of the Lion Knights. Do the other heroes remember that far back in their adventure?

"That certainly makes it look like the Hinckwells are involved."

"Oh yes, I remember that. I don't remember anything about Crownies, though."

Sir William Fane looks up.

"Well, whaddya know...

"I ain't seen one of these since before I was prospecting in the mountains beyond Brobric Pass. Symbol of the so-called Lion Knights, it is. I've heard they'd returned to Uland recently. Saw one in Bric'Lin a couple days ago. He took off in a hurry, though, didn't say where he was going. Mentioned something about the Hinckwells, though.

De'kra describes the event a little better, all the while having a vague memory of sailing to the south and then towards the sky. The memory is full of gaps and he isn't even sure it involved a boat at all. But there was something important to the southern sky...

"I believe we are going to go infiltrate the Lion Knights' camp."

"All right then, do you want to visit the Paramount Potions Shop, White Bear Tavern, or Brobric Inn while we're here? Or shall we leave Brobric?"

"While we're here, we might as well see what else Brobric has to offer. Let's go to the White Bear Tavern next."

We exit the elven building and head to the White Bear Tavern.

The tavern is a small one. The head of a white bear dominates the room. In the corner, a few men are playing cards, but other than that, there aren't many people in the establishment.

Thormanil wanders over to the men playing cards and watches a few hands, trying to figure out what game they are playing.

Posted

You can see that the men are playing 2-player Alouette.

Having caught the name of the game, Thormanil watches a few more hands, hoping to get a feel for how an average round might go. He's short on change now, but he'd like to have an understanding of the game for when the group is next in Brobric.

OOC:

Any chance of "playing" a hand between the two men? Reading the description vaguely reminds me of "War".

One of the men looks up.

"Heroes! Any of you want to play?"

QM Note:

Admittedly, I've never played it either. I Googled 'Medieval card games', and picked the easiest one I could find.

"If five gold coins is enough to cover my wager, I shall give the game a try, good sir. Thormanil, I may require your advice!"

Benji walks up to the bartender.

"Hey, is that a real bear head? Nice little tavern you got here."

"Anyways, heard anything about the Lion Knights? Or the Hinckwells for that matter?"

Benji orders a drink, but doesn't pay...

"I'm not telling you anything until you pay for that or give it back to me. Mead costs 5 Gold!"

"At this point, I'm so tired of playing the same guy over and over, I'll gladly play with you.

"We'll keep things simple. Bet on the game as a whole. 5 Gold, you say? Perfect. I'll deal."

The man deals you nine cards.

You have received the King of Staves, the Queen of Cups, the Nine of Swords, the Two of Cups, the Five of Coins, the Eight of Cups, the Knave of Staves, the Two of Coins, and the Three of Cups.

QM Note:

No, not exactly accurate representations of medieval playing cards, but I wanted them simple and recognizable. I just changed the suits and the Jack to a Knave. Sorry for the poor quality of the thumbnail images. I didn't have time to create smaller versions, so these are just the automatically generated Brickshelf thumbs.

So the idea is for me to choose a higher card than you do each round and let you know my choice?

Whispers: "Any ideas for a strategy, friends?"

If I understood the game properly, then yes, that's the basic idea. Now, I'm not quite sure if two cards are played per round, or four (one each vs two each), but I do believe play starts with the dealer. Personally, I'd try to top his card by a small margin, leaving yourself as many high value cards as possible for use as the values increase.

Whispers: "So we pick and 'reveal' our chosen card at the same time and the higher one wins the hand? Am I best to use a low card first so they effectively waste their highest card first, assuming they use it then? They probably have at least one king."

Posted

"The non-dealer leads the first trick, and only one card is played at a time."

Whoops, sure enough, my good man. So, to clarify, tricks last for a total of two cards? He drops a two, you drop a three, you win the trick, then you drop a king, he drops a king, trick ties, then he drops a queen but you have nothing higher than a knave in your hand, so he collects that trick and the previous?

Or do you play one card at a time, up to four on the table?

Well, you're the one playing, I figured you've gotta have a better idea of what's going on than we do. Heck, you coulda told me that if a fella loses 3 tricks in a row, he's gotta run around the tavern au natural three times before play can continue, and I'd have taken your word as truth! Ha ha!

Seems you're playing a best of 9, and it ain't blind play. You could try to get rid of some of your low cards early, hoping to sweep the last few tricks, or try to go strong early and hope he's got a weak hand. I'd save your face cards for his lead, I think. But heck, whadda I know?

You opt to play the Two of Cups:

The other man counters with the Four of Staves. You lose the trick.

He then plays the Four of Swords:

Remaining in your hand are the King of Staves, the Queen of Cups, the Nine of Swords, the Five of Coins, the Eight of Cups, the Knave of Staves, the Two of Coins, and the Three of Cups.
