President of Brick Town Posted October 16, 2011 Posted October 16, 2011 Too bad Ducthy can't be made in trans-green, in the positive side, he uses the genie tail. Much detail on the Flying Ducthman set. Still I'm buying the party set. Quote
Derek Posted October 16, 2011 Posted October 16, 2011 (edited) I would really like the Flying Dutchman set, if it weren't for the figure himself. It just looks off to me, but I think it's nice that he has a satchel in sand green. Lego missed the perfect opportunity to use a few glow in the dark pieces (even as accents like in Diagon Alley), which would probably made this set a must buy for many people. The party set would have been 10x better if it had Patrick's house instead of Spongebob's and was an add-on to the most recent Pineapple set, which probably would have kept selling. I love the party versions of the characters and the fact that Mrs. Puff is in this set. Edited October 16, 2011 by Derek Quote
Aanchir Posted October 16, 2011 Posted October 16, 2011 But what do you mean "no him"? He's right there, on the box art behind the cocktail bar, with a cup and with - wait - is that a present? Squidward is actually giving someone a present? Yes, but look at his face-- it's pretty clear he's not happy about it. I like both of these sets in some ways and dislike them in others. The colors of the Flying Dutchman's Ship are pretty badly organized, and his face seems a bit iffy. It would have been excellent if Brick Daddy's head could have been used, since it would have had a decent beard-shape and his hair shape in the back. Unfortunately, it's far too small and probably wouldn't work with that hat anyway. On the other hand, in general the set uses some clever building techniques, and the figs are probably about as well-made as they could possibly be. Well, with one exception-- Dutchy should have gotten his dining sock. The birthday party set is pretty decent, but I don't like Squidward's house in this set. The original was no work of art, but this one seems more blocky than rocky. The "party" elements outside are well done, though. I love the amplifiers made from treasure chests The interior of Spongebob's house bugs me a bit-- if that's supposed to be his catapult bed, it's much less appealing than the original version. Spongebob's house has a lot of pyramid-shapes on it, probably to give it more of a pineapple texture, but the end result doesn't feel too authentic to how it's depicted in the show with mostly-smooth walls. And it doesn't feel much like a genuine pineapple shape, for that matter-- just a stylized pineapple with a few hideous growths. I like how the sloped "roof" sections are now attached, but otherwise I feel it pales in comparison to past versions. A better improvement would have been using hinges to make the walls more smooth, IMO. Quote
The Blue Brick Posted October 16, 2011 Posted October 16, 2011 That Flying Dutchman head reminds me of one of those hideous lego pirate knock brands. Quote
President of Brick Town Posted October 16, 2011 Posted October 16, 2011 (edited) Anyway, is there any interior on Squidward's house? Edited October 16, 2011 by President of Brick Town Quote
Justin Posted October 18, 2011 Posted October 18, 2011 Both sets look fun and I'm really looking forward to buying them once they are available. I also have yet to buy this year's sets (yes, I have a lot of catching up to do.). The only thing thing that would improve the party set is the inclusion of Sandy. I like that all the characters are wearing leis and flowers, giving the set a Hawaiian party theme. Quote
Hiawatha Posted October 18, 2011 Posted October 18, 2011 I just can't wait for the Flying Dutchman ship! It offers a lot of MOCing ability! Quote
strangely Posted October 18, 2011 Posted October 18, 2011 While I already have the previous pineapple houses I'll still buy this set. Squidwards house and Mrs. Puff make it worthwhile for me. I do have to say though the new pineapple house does fix a few key problems, firstly it is now properly scaled to Squidward's house and it seems as if finally the door can open all the way. As for the Flying Dutchman I feel like they missed the opportunity to give us a new Mr. Krab's (Who has yet to get proper claws), also the Dutchman minifigure is disappointing (Printing the nose on there makes the whole face look weird). And while the design of the entire thing isn't bad, I feel like some transparent pieces would have been welcomed (Considering its a ghost ship). Quote
Zarkan Posted October 18, 2011 Posted October 18, 2011 The one thing that's always impressed me with this theme is how many different minifigures the designers keep coming up with. This newest wave is a particularly excellent example: the pirate Spongebob and Pactric are completely new, and feature highly imaginative printing to boot. I wish TLC would give some of their other themes as good a treatment as they're giving this one - I'm still waiting for TLC to finally invest in some new head prints for CITY's rather plain looking citizens. Sid Sidious Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 Maybe I'll get one of these sets for my sister (huge Spongebob fan) for Christmas and get some parts when she gets bored. Quote
TomRoid Posted October 29, 2011 Posted October 29, 2011 Pros: -Flying Dutchman! -Flying Dutchman's Ship! -Squidward's House again and Spongebob's House -Merry Go Round -See Saw -Mrs Puff -Cake -Balloons -Stereos -DJ Board -Nice colours on the ship Cons: -Small Dutchman Ship -They could be based off new episodes which I don't watch but if not, they're for some reason creating stuff not based on episodes like that boat set. Why? There are plenty of old episodes as well as new episodes to base stuff on. -To use some of the stuff from the party set they may have flowers on them. The Flying Dutchman: Could get thanks to FLying Dutchman and ship. Awesome. Bikini Bottom Undersea Party: Might get. Got some good stuff, but is based on a new or non-existent episode. Quote
trainguy111 Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 I would like to see Mindy from the Spongebob movie in lego. Lego needs more mermaids. Quote
Canada_7 Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 I've been tempted to get a Spongebob set in the past but still don't own any of them. I missed out on the oldest sets, and the current sets don't intrigue me too much (the "Good Neighbours", and the latest version of the Krabby Patty set seem very "meh" to me, glove world is overpriced IMHO). The birthday party one though seems like it'll capture the most basic elements of Spongebob Squarepants all in one set. It'll likely be the only Spongebob set I'll get (not willing to overpay for some of the older ones that came out back in 2006). Quote
Aanchir Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 This site has a couple new alternate images of the Spongebob Squarepants sets for next year. In the Flying Dutchman set, we see that the "secret compartment" in the rock hides a treasure chest. No pic of what's inside, though. We also see the inside of Squidward's house, featuring his art studio full of self-portraits and a stand with sheet music for his clarinet (also included). Quote
Darth Nihilus Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 (edited) I'm not really a fan of the Spongbob sets, but when I found these pics, I felt it was my duty to share them: They're just better pics of the figs. Each picture links to a bigger version on Brickipedia. EDIT: Mrs. Puff and Squidward from the Party set: Edited November 19, 2011 by Darth Nihilus Quote
nicoga3000 Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 As Spongebob is probably one of my favorite shows on (I remember when it first started, and I loved it), I'll probably work to start gathering up the various sets. I don't currently own any, but I need to change that! The show reminds me of a modern day Ren & Stimpy, and there are definitely some adult jokes going on under the childish coat of paint! Looking forward to these! Quote

Looking forward to these! Yeah it is a good show and love watching it with my 10 year old and im 30. I'm supprised that they are still producing new Spongebob sets but they sure do sell quick here in Australia as the are a Target exclusive so they are hard to get your hands on. Quote
Oky Posted December 16, 2011 Author Posted December 16, 2011 The sets are now available from S@H! Quote
nicoga3000 Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 The sets are now available from S@H! Already got 3818 Bikini Bottom Undersea Party. I'll be going to the Lego store tomorrow to grab 3817 The Flying Dutchman! Quote
CM4Sci Posted December 18, 2011 Posted December 18, 2011 (edited) Bricklink has some "hi-res" photos of each minifigure from the Dutchman set: Anyway to make the images smaller, or have them side to side? Oh well, not a big fan of Dutchman..the whole head/beard thing doesn't work for me. -Sci Edited December 18, 2011 by CM4S Quote
prateek Posted December 18, 2011 Posted December 18, 2011 Flying Dutchman... The beard just ruins it IMO. I think they should've just given him a separate beard piece. Quote

Clone OPatra Posted December 18, 2011 Posted December 18, 2011 I can understand why the did the beard this way. If they used a seperate piece, it would've covered up the face and we wouldn't be able to really have the nose or mouth visible. They could've made a new beard piece with a nose moulded with it and a mouth printed on, but I'm sure nobody would've liked that either. Personally, I don't mind this solution. It gives us a workable head, and I don't think it ruins the torso either. It looks like is a has a fluffy bib on it. Quote
Miss Kyle Posted December 18, 2011 Posted December 18, 2011 Aw man, the non-beard really sucks. With all the beard figures these days (Father Christmas to say the least) it should have been possible to give the Dutchman one. Meh. I'll still buy the set though, as I really love the FD episodes. Quote
lightningtiger Posted December 18, 2011 Posted December 18, 2011 I'll join the chorus, a beard piece was required.....but remember kids just want someone who looks like that ghost who holds an I.O.U. from the Mr. Krabs for his soul ! At least Spongebob and Patrick look great, pity no Squidward getting hit by lightning constantly ! Still the Dutchman figure is good....except the beard part, meh. Quote
