redesigníng the axles, reducing the chassis height, without reducing the ground clearance.

May be train remote helps you at climbing. Driving with standart remote makes crawler too nervous.

I think you made wheelbase too long! 2-4 studs would be enugh for the first version.

@ efferman: I think your wheelbase is fine as-is. Many of raus' Lego Technic Rock Crawlers have a similar wheelbase, and they do just fine on the rocks:
