Maltem Posted October 2, 2011 Posted October 2, 2011 Well i buy alot sets for my kid. First i did build them with him. Now i look when he builds them. He is only 5 years but is putting together sets like 7931 without me (Yeah i'm happy :)) Right now he is into star wars. A while ago i did get him the 7931, 7930. Talk about 2 very different sets. The 7931 he plays a lot with. The 7930 falls apart every time he tryes... it might be the worst set every. Sure its nice to look at, but try to play with it, Since Lego is very expensive here in Sweden i try to order 3-4 sets on the same time from ebay to save money. Now its almost time to bulk up for christmas :) He been looking at the 7962. But it looks like a hard set to play with. He like to get a big spaceship for christmas like the 7964, 7965 or the 8097. However the set he been talking about since his birthday is the 10198. Now i don't like to waste my money like i did on the 7930. So whats the most fun sets for star wars to plain with? The 10198 looks to big to play with, i never seen it live however. Cheers Quote

I got one last Christams and even though I don't play with my models *shifty eyes* It continually falls apart when it's sat on the shelf. And even if you weren't planning on moving it around, the play space inside is really poor. I don't own 7965 but that looks so much better as a play toy . The whole inside is a play space and as the bottom is flat, would be easy to pick up and swoosh about. I expect 7964 would be much the same as 10198 (it's a very similar design) but it has a carry hundle so may be a better swoosher! Also, if it's not very good at flying the large selection of figures and play-things would make up for it. I hope that helps Quote
Vindice Posted October 2, 2011 Posted October 2, 2011 I'm in a similar situation. My son is 5 in just over a month now and loves Lego, especially SW. none of the sets are bad if they are naturally careful with these sorts of toys but the Millenium Falcon isnt very swooshable for a kid of that age. The pod racers too can be a little fiddly but look great. by far his favourite sets are the turbo tank and the infiltrator. I'd really recommend the infiltrator as it may also be something that he could enjoy building. It's an ideal size, has a great character and is easier on the wallet than most too. Quote
lightningtiger Posted October 2, 2011 Posted October 2, 2011 More minifigs the better in a child's mind, battle packs are the best, but if he or she wants some great building you can not pass upon 8038 The Battle Of Endor ! Quote

What do kids love better than tons of minifigures, a catapult, an exploding function and a robot that walks backwards? Quote
fyrmedhatt Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 (edited) 7962 is actually a great set for playability, each of the podracers have handles that can be used for swooshing them around, just check out the reviews on this site. I have to second 8038 Battle of Endor though, it's a fantastic playset with several small vehicles and a bunker, not to mention 12 figures! Edited for accuracy, thanks Hollander! Vindice Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 Actually thats a really good call, the endor bunker set is one of the best I've ever bought and superb value for money. It's the closest thing in SW to the MMV set. Quote
Brickmamba Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 endor set is definately bang for buck when comes to recreating an original scene how about a clone tank, big vehicle you can push around with room for tons of figs, lots of playability for a young kid Quote
wokajablocka Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 I put my vote in for the Endor set but my son loves the sith infiltrator. Maybe he just really likes Darth Maul but the ship is swoshable and has a few play features. Quote
legolooney Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 I know what you mean, I 'play' with my LEGO, with my young cousin. He seems to prefer the Zam Wessel Chase. Its quite an old set now but it's got great playability. Find it here. 2 spaceships that can chase and shoot each other, bright colours and cool shapes. And to make things better it comes with 2 Jedi (great fun) and a bounty hunter that can change her face!! I highly recommend! Quote
drdavewatford Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 Can there be any other set in LEGO history with more play features than Set 10188 Death Star ? Possibly the best LEGO set ever, and it'll hold it's value at the very least if you ever decided to sell it.... Certainly gets my vote. Dr. D. Quote
Ackbar Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 (edited) I vote for 8038 The Battle Of Endor as well! It's really a great set. Lots of minifigs, a nice build, a great finished model, some cool vehicles and a lot of play value. 10188 Death Star is great as well, but... ...very expensive. I can also recommend 8089 Hoth Wampa Cave. A nice ship, a skeleton, an ice cave, some ribs and a snow monster - what more can anyone ask for??? Edited October 5, 2011 by Ackbar Quote
Brickdoctor Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 I too would recommend 8038 and 6212. The former is probably the best all-around playset, ever, and the latter is the ideal starter set. (well, except for the addition of Wedge instead of Threepio) Quote
DBZkame Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 When I was a little kid, I really liked sets that went together (such as a bunch of Tatooine sets) so that I could put them together into a gigantic set. Back then those where the original town lego sets, but now I would say that you should buy your child sets that go together for maximum play Quote
Decky123 Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 I've never seen that deathstar before....its pretty impressive!!! Quote
Ki-Adi-Mundi Posted October 9, 2011 Posted October 9, 2011 As others have said, 8038 is the best overall package, imho. The new 7879 is great for kids, too, i guess. While many AFOLs critisize the set to have too many play features - this might be a big pro on the part of a kid. The set has colourful minifigs, many moveable things, a vehicle and even an exotic animal. Stable, medical area and the secret entrance offer plenty ideas for free play i think. But honestly (personal opinion!) spoken i would not buy anything about Star Wars for a 5-yo kid. They'll be confronted with war and weapons all too soon. I am a passionate OT fan but at this age i would prefer something more peaceful/civilian for the kids. Quote

Having played with Transformers and other fighting robots in my early years, violence has never really struck me as an issue with toys aimed at 5-year olds. Indeed, the biggest problem is that they simply aren't able to appreciate a franchise for what it is because they've never been exposed to it. I cringe to see pieces of great classics like 7163 and 7140 mixed in with all the other LEGO that some unknowing parent bought for their kid that knew absolutely nothing about Star Wars (resulting in said kid disassembling, losing parts of, and ultimately dumping a good portion of the sets). Occasionally I also find myself wishing I could identify the sets in my own ancient boxes of LEGO (impossible at this point as most of the pieces are lost ). I did play with star wars figures when i was 5. Look where i'm now! still love star wars and still haven't killed anyone with my lightsable! Quote
Thego Posted October 9, 2011 Posted October 9, 2011 Same for me. I did play with star wars figures when i was 5. Look where i'm now! still love star wars and still haven't killed anyone with my lightsable! You want this, don't you? The hate is swelling in you now. Take your Jedi weapon. Use it. I am unarmed. Strike me down with it. Give in to your anger. With each passing moment you make yourself more my servant. Quote
