matt22hew Posted October 15, 2011 Author Posted October 15, 2011 24 wide and more brick link on the way for a mid section build looks better bigger but this is going to be massive! Quote
ZCerberus Posted October 15, 2011 Posted October 15, 2011 It looks better already! Good work ol'... err... relatively new chum! Quote
matt22hew Posted October 18, 2011 Author Posted October 18, 2011 Here are some more updates. More bricks on the way and I really like the "24" wide body. Ran out of a few colors but wanted to play around with my "22" headlight assembly to get the right stud height for attaching the top of the side panels. Quote
kurigan Posted October 18, 2011 Posted October 18, 2011 I would just like to submit: Later Ships of the Line, those from the very twilight of the era, often had little to no noticeable curvature for to aft. Take HMS Conway formerly Nile, which survived as a training ship until 1953, when she was ran aground and broke. Something of a rarity since there are quite a few modern photographs, with clear images available. Typically modelers have to make do with drafts and artists interpretations, where a physical example like Victory cannot be referenced. She seems utterly flat and is of similar size and fire power being that she is a 90 gunner of the first rate. Without having to revamp your design you could continue with your cross section and later add on a bow and stern more in style of Nile than Victory. Corweena is developing an attractive method for the sharper kind of bows seen on mid 19th century vessels with his Cerberus, 32, which may be of help if you take this advice. I find your hull construction method similar to my own and it pleases me to see it taking shape. I’ve never yet been able to apply my entire theory to plastic, lacking funds to custom order bricks, so I’m eager to see how yours works out. Thanks for sharing her, and good luck with the project. Sebeus I Posted October 18, 2011 Posted October 18, 2011 Making the ship wider was definitely an improvement, keep up the good work. How long do you think the ship will be ? Quote
matt22hew Posted October 18, 2011 Author Posted October 18, 2011 The (pinlock) bow will likely be very short as the foremost mast will be at the end of the mid section build. The (pinlock) stern will likely be fairly big roughly half the size (guessing) as the midsection. The third mast will be at the very front of the stern section. I would imagine the full hull to be a bit shy of a meter and about a full meter with the bow sprit. Quote
matt22hew Posted October 21, 2011 Author Posted October 21, 2011 Did alot more work today but I left the heavy detail inside wanting. I will likely just get here mostly together on the exterior then tear down and rebuild with detail. And most importantly I just wanted to build what I could with the bricks I had available! Enjoy! Quote
Kerntechniker Posted October 21, 2011 Posted October 21, 2011 Great pictures. I enjoy following your thread and look forward to see the ship complete. Keeping bricking! Quote
Admiral Croissant Posted October 21, 2011 Posted October 21, 2011 Looks quite impressive compared to the Imperial Flagship What kind of details are you going to add on the inside? And how are you going to make the ship modular? Removable decks? Different ship sections? Good luck! Quote
matt22hew Posted October 21, 2011 Author Posted October 21, 2011 The entire side sections are going to be removable with studs only at the top and bottom. So a nice tug at a few cannon ports will reveal the crew in her belly. Both bow and stern will be pin locked as seen in the photos (i have yet to place the fe pins that will be in the technic brick at both ends.) The real challenge will be mamimg the bow and stern curves! Glad everyone enjoys her! Still without a name however Quote

And how are you going to make the ship modular? Removable decks? Different ship sections? Good luck! I'm afraid I agree with previous posts about the hull shape... Other point is that if you are going to build it so tall and wide you should probably add extra length, to keep the proportions... Anyway it is a massive project and is looking pretty impressive, so I'm looking forward to see it finished! Quote

Anyway it is a massive project and is looking pretty impressive, so I'm looking forward to see it finished! After I built the mid section I too realized the height may be a concern. So I'm likely to do exactly what you mentioned by lengthening her. Mostly making the stern longer with a taper the whole stern length. Likely a plate width every three our four bricks. Quote
Corweena Posted October 23, 2011 Posted October 23, 2011 wow......when finished, that will be one BIG ship. Quote
Admiral Croissant Posted October 23, 2011 Posted October 23, 2011 Impressive! Are these the fore and main mast? Or main and mizzen? I like the brown yards and the hull and masts seem very strong. If you'd like to go for a bit of historically accuracy I think you should remove the bottom yard on each mast. HMS Victory (and every other ship in a normal situation) also doesn't have those. I think you could also lengthen the yards a bit so you can add some equally impressive large sails in the future. Good luck Quote

Good luck Th masts shown are indeed the fore and main with the mizzen to be right at the front of the stern section. I agree on the removal of the bottom yards for accuracy but I plan to not do a rope rigging just yet and using paper or cloth sails. I think after I get her mostly done I will enjoy it for a year or two then tear it down and rebuild with more detail and actual rigging. I have since added a bit of length to the yards however Quote
Horatio Posted October 23, 2011 Posted October 23, 2011 She's beautiful- I only have a few suggestions. First, the bases of the masts on the top deck are too big (with the slopes) one 4x4 round brick would do it just fine. Also, it might be worth noting that the columns holding the decks up are a little thick- Here are some of the ones i've used (in white) sorry that it's blurry- but here they are on the victory: They are actually very skinny. She is looking great, though, and the shrouds look awesome! Quote
matt22hew Posted October 25, 2011 Author Posted October 25, 2011 I agree with the deck support being too big but with side panels being removable I wanted extra rigidity. The main section is amazingly solid. I started playing around with several bow mock ups and I believe something to this effect is what I will ultimately use. I have no yellow slopes as of yet so the brown will eventually be yellow. Quote
Sebeus I Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 (edited) The bow is well shaped so far, I think some additional cannon ports wouldn't be out of place in the bow though I understand that's not easy to achieve I don't know the proper term but I think the prow is too wide, two studs should be enough (you have a width of 4 studs). Keep it up ! Edited October 25, 2011 by Sebeus Iniwum Quote
cb4 Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 (edited) I don't know the proper term but I think the prow is too wide, two studs should be enough (you have a width of 4 studs). I agree with Sebeus, the cutwater as it is called should be two studs wide at the most. I use one stud wide on my models and they're actually wider than scale. I'm looking forward to seeing how you handle the stern. Is there a particular ship you're basing this off of? Edited October 26, 2011 by cb4 Quote

I agree with all about the two wide breakwater. It will be changed soon. I was basing it off the Victory at first with 2 decks in favor of the three. But it is mostly just a free build at this moment. When finished I will likely tear it appart and rebuild with some other good suggestions made. Likely with a sloop and with thinner support on the inner decks for more accuarcy. The stern will be trick and will likely have a gradual taper towards the end. Right now I'm trying to search for good windows for the stern. Unfortunately I cannot find a lattice window pane in yellow! Quote
Skipper Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 (edited) Wow, you build fast! Just wanted to say that she's looking great, your technique transitioned well and she's going to be a monster when done. Someone will probably correct me on this, but is the bow curve too gradual? I (think) it should be more blunt. Keep it up! Edited October 26, 2011 by Skipper Quote
legomonk Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 (drool) WoW! it is really coming along as an amazing WIP. It is truly inspiring Quote
matt22hew Posted October 27, 2011 Author Posted October 27, 2011 (edited) Since I'm awaiting more bricks from the link, I'm going to do a tear down to the lower floor of the upper gun deck. Will be lowering the quarter deck down a brick so as the side become part of the the quarter decking sides. Also will rework the supports on the upper gundeck to be a bit more spread out. Should be a fun night. I think I might also lose the grated ports in favor of a large opening with studs across, similar to "big boys" victory design. I mainly decieded to do this as the poop deck would have been too high at the current height. --- Finished the restructuring, Looks much better in my opinion! here are some pics Edited October 28, 2011 by matt22hew Quote
matt22hew Posted October 31, 2011 Author Posted October 31, 2011 I did some more work on the bow and put it in place to see the effect. Looks good in my opinion and I still have yet to add the details. More to follow soon. Quote
