Viceroy Posted October 9, 2011 Posted October 9, 2011 Hello everyone, I was trying out a few of Derfels techniques and got carried away. This is my first completed MOC so my Lego and photo skills are quite raw. Hopefully you can still enjoy my pictures... In the deepest part of the woods lies the Tree of Ancestors. This tree is an ancient conduit of Magic and has been home to a handful of worthy Wizards over the centuries. Currently Sandor the Blue and his apprentice Lucius are the tree's occupants. For now they live a peaceful existance, unravelling the tree's arcane secrets and trading potions with those brave or desperate enough to seek them out. Thank you for viewing! Quote
ZCerberus Posted October 9, 2011 Posted October 9, 2011 (edited) I like this a lot! The cottage looks good and the scene is well staged. Very well done and the photos look quite good as well. For a few critiques... I would make the tree taller, it is so wide now that it would need to be taller. I would also add some additional greenery higher up. I wold also not use the trans green in there. Edited October 9, 2011 by ZCerberus Quote
LandShark Posted October 9, 2011 Posted October 9, 2011 (edited) A nice little MOC, with a good back-story to go with it. For some reason, the sand-green roof works really well. It just looks... right. Hope to be seeing more from you in the future. Edited October 9, 2011 by LandShark Quote
SSJ2 Dark Posted October 10, 2011 Posted October 10, 2011 I agree with LandShark, that sand green roof piece is fantastic on its own, and works really well in your MOC! You did a great job adding small details like the plants and wagon wheel to make it look rough and real! My one critique, the black roof might look better if you add a slope to the front of it, or some foliage maybe. It looks a little flat there, just needs something more. But overall, really nice! AussieJimbo Posted October 10, 2011 Posted October 10, 2011 Looks great, Viceroy. It immediately brought to mind this tree chapel in France. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ch%C3%AAne_chapelle Nice work on your first MOC. :classic: Quote
streifen Posted October 10, 2011 Posted October 10, 2011 Blink and you miss it! Nicely-camouflaged house! Quote
Section8 Posted October 10, 2011 Posted October 10, 2011 That is a great MOC. It reminds me of some of the old Forestmen sets. Perhaps you could put a hinge in it like they have so the house opens from the tree; that way you could make an interior (I'm assuming it doesn't have one). Of course, I don't know if the construction would allow this. The tree looks fine to me. Yeah, you could go taller, but there are also trees which lose the top to disease or lightning and continue to grow outward without getting taller. So in that respect, there's no biological reason it should be taller I read Derfel's guide and doubted its applicability to smaller, more System-style castle MOCs, but you did it. I'll have to give it try too sometime. Quote
Derfel Cadarn Posted October 10, 2011 Posted October 10, 2011 Well done, this looks really cool! This would make a great Lego set, i love the little building and the wooden tower, very nicely done. I think the tree can work either way, it would look good if it was taller, but it also works well the way it is, and I think the shape of it gives it some character. Nice work Quote
Viceroy Posted October 10, 2011 Author Posted October 10, 2011 Thanks for the encouraging comments everyone. Perhaps the tree could be taller, although the image I had in my mind was a squat, twisted and gnarled tree that hadn't grown properly due to the powerful magic contained within it or a spell going wrong and damaging it. Or maybe I just ran out of brown pieces AussieJimbo: Thats an awesome chapel, I hadn't seen that before. My design was inspired by the town of Kuldahar in the Icewind Dale computer games. Perhaps one day I'll be able to make a Lego replica... Quote
dogfin Posted October 10, 2011 Posted October 10, 2011 Great creation. I really like the integration of the tree and the cottage. It looks as though this cottage could be found in some secluded forest. Quote
lightningtiger Posted October 10, 2011 Posted October 10, 2011 Excellent 'Viceroy', great tree house design....could there be Forestmen near by too eh ? It all fits so perfectly....almost faultless.....Brick On 'Viceroy' ! Quote
Big Cam Posted October 11, 2011 Posted October 11, 2011 Blink and you miss it! Nicely-camouflaged house! It is fantastic, the way the house blends into the tree. Quote
weltall1028 Posted October 11, 2011 Posted October 11, 2011 A lot of nice detail in such a small MOC. Brick on! Quote
de Gothia Posted October 11, 2011 Posted October 11, 2011 Really lovely build! I agree that the tree is perfect now! Quote
Jack Bricker Posted October 12, 2011 Posted October 12, 2011 I really like your wizards cottage. It is very colorful, fun and reminds me a lot of the game called Trine. I also think you should get some brickforge mushrooms in different colors like pink, blue, red, green and yellow to put around your tree. Quote
LEGO Train 12 Volts Posted October 12, 2011 Posted October 12, 2011 What a peaceful place! I like this cottage and I love the web and the thick garden! Wonderful!!! Quote
Flobnomdob Posted October 15, 2011 Posted October 15, 2011 Well, you certainly made this look better than my first moc! Love the use of seaweed as ivy or something, it all looks very natural. Just one constructive critisizm- I don't understand the use of trans-orange studs on the roof... Quote
