The Real Indiana Jones Posted October 12, 2011 Posted October 12, 2011 (edited) Yes, we all loved the mine cart tracks, and the Mola Ram minifig is classic... but what about the sacrificial cage? What about the giant Kali statue? Even though we have seen outright cannibalism in a Pirates of the Caribbean set, at the time TLG was probably a bit reluctant to do a human sacrifice, especially an overtly religious one. They will gladly do ancient deities like Poseidon and Anubis, but they generally shun any contemporary religious imagery, such as a statue of a Hindu goddess like Kali who is still revered today. Well as a Halloween treat, here is set 7199 as I'm sure the designers really *wanted* to create it!! There are small changes everywhere, but the main things I added are the sacrificial cage, and the giant Kali-Ma statue. Here is Kali The Destroyer, based on various images from Wikipedia, rather than being exactly like in the movie. The mechanism that lowers the cage. Note that I also created an upper level as in the movie and the game. The cage is very simple... just two ladders, two bars, and ten flexed robot-arms. The chain just loops through without attaching directly. (I drilled thru the two impaled skulls) "Indeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!" =O "Sorry, Doll Face, I've got bigger problems to deal with!!" XD This little scene is partly inspired by the boss battle in Lego Indy II, but more so by the Angkor Wat guards in the first Tomb Raider movie, and the giant six-scimitar-wielding statues that come to life in all of the India levels of the video game Tomb Raider III. Comments and crit are welcome, Thanks!! It would also be fun to talk about what kinds of potentially taboo imagery TLG has created or avoided over the years... Concept Posted October 12, 2011 Posted October 12, 2011 I see nothing wrong with making it more accurate to the movie lol. We all know she doesn't die in the end anyway so its a happy tale really :) Quote

Although India still censors *kissing* scenes in movies... =D Edited October 12, 2011 by The Real Indiana Jones Quote
LEGO Train 12 Volts Posted October 12, 2011 Posted October 12, 2011 Fantastic realization! I like the cage and Kali statue! Great work! Quote
LandShark Posted October 12, 2011 Posted October 12, 2011 Great work, Real-Indy. I don't think many people can argue that this was one of the best, and edgiest, Indiana Jones sets. It's good to see an expanded version, with the stuff Lego couldn't do. One question, though. Can the mine tracks still attach anywhere? I know it would be movie-accurate, but it looks a bit incomplete without it. Comments and crit are welcome, Thanks!! It would also be fun to talk about what kinds of potentially taboo imagery TLG has created or avoided over the years... I think Lego been pretty good at avoiding it, in general. The Indiana Jones theme had some things that were risky, like Nazis and Religion, but I don't think there was much controversy around that. Overall, great work, and you've raised a very interesting subject. Quote
Nightshroud99 Posted October 12, 2011 Posted October 12, 2011 I like the play features in this set Nice job, the standout is the skull necklace Kali is wearing. Quote
The Real Indiana Jones Posted October 12, 2011 Author Posted October 12, 2011 Thanks, and all these additions only cost about $25 or $30. The mine car track was never directly attached to the original set. I like having it as a separate element, curving around the back as an escape route, but I have some extra track, so I could possibly attach it in the future somehow. In addition to Kali, Wikipedia also has a detailed article on the real historical Thuggee. Also, regarding religious imagery, I notice that the new Joust Castle 10223 has a large book in front of a stained-glass window. The Castle theme has tons of Witches and Wizards, which was a sort of religion unto itself, but this is the first time I have seen a reference to Christianity. Quote

I don't think the problem was necessarily religion, but the fact that Mola Ram took the heart out of victims and then sacrificed others... I think that was just too violent for a children's toy. I don't think that's a direct reference to Christianity, but I see how people could see it that way. Also, I remember back when Minifigures Series 2 came out, one store (which had a Christian owner) got rid of all of the Witch and Vampire figures. And I see what you mean about the mine track, but this still looks great. Quote
The Real Indiana Jones Posted October 13, 2011 Author Posted October 13, 2011 (edited) Ah, well maybe the collectable minifig surgeon will have a fully sculpted heart as his accessory! ;) And yes, wizardry and witchcraft and the entire concept of Harry Potter is something that would have gotten you burned at the stake 200 years ago, but nowadays very few people even think of it as a taboo anymore. And that's a great example to show that TLG will do anything with ancient religions, but they only hint very vaguely at currently-practiced religions. That is what made me do an alternate build of The Temple of the Holy Grail and an updated and fully Buddhist version of The Temple of Mount Everest. I love the way the Buddha turned out! I also just posted pics of my original MOC of The Map Room at Tanis with my re-imagined version of the lost city laid out at micro-scale. And finally, if you are an Indy fan, or like building European scenes, then you can also try my my improved Venetian gondola design. Hope you like! The Real Indiana Jones Posted October 18, 2011 Author Posted October 18, 2011 (edited) And a Halloween bonus... Chatter Lal and the Young Maharaja look on, hypnotized by the Black Sleep of Kali, as Mola Ram and a Thuggee Acolyte perform the ritual! The acolyte's decals are by FineClonier.com... And the heart is here. Happy Halloween, Bwahaha!! >={D> Edited October 18, 2011 by The Real Indiana Jones Quote
