October 25, 201113 yr If paying it for the pneumatics not as good as the 8462 tow truck. But yes it's a good set nicely detailed, the b model is a 'high rise' log loader which is good to Edited October 25, 201113 yr by Alasdair Ryan

What's peoples opinion on this nice looking little set? Very playable. A bit of pumpn will get you a rise of the arms and a tip of the bucket. Parallel lift. Storage tank makes all the difference. Steering is by top beacon, but will turn by moving back section of loader. Mini steering wheel also moves. Well thought out. In comparison to its newer brother 8265, you will get more play value without a motor. They are still desirable as a boxed set.

October 26, 201113 yr Yes and expensive too ;( All common parts so you dont need to buy a complete set, easy to build a modified version, mine was modded to fit the larger wheels as I felt the originals were a little small.

The older studded parts are not common to me as iv all studless sets,my problem is I don't like buying second hand sets so it ends up costing me a fortune,im just waiting on my 8455 misb to be delivered which cost 250€ , the cheapest 8464 I can find new is 135€!

What's peoples opinion on this nice looking little set? It's a very well thought out set, feels very sturdy and has good playability with the air tank. They are quite expensive (60€ upwards) second-hand however and I'm not sure why. If you're just after pneumatic parts, 8462 is probably a better deal (50-60€ if you're not in a hurry), and it has two air tanks. - Sok. Edited October 27, 201113 yr by Sokratesz

October 27, 201113 yr Yes i agree with you there, i do not know what thay were thinking when thay those those wheels. Edited October 27, 201113 yr by Alasdair Ryan
October 27, 201113 yr It's a good source of parts though, I have three that I got for about 50€ each Edited October 27, 201113 yr by Sokratesz
October 27, 201113 yr 8462 is horrid and looks like something off the moon, them wheels make me sick too ;( Really? I love 8462! It is a very sturdy and playable model. I love the color, and the wheels are some of my favorite that LEGO has ever made. It is true that it doesn't look much like a real tow truck and no tow truck would ever use such wheels, but part of what I liked about it was the originality. It may not look like a real tow truck, but it does look cool. The Dune Buggy and Motorcycle with those wheels are great as well. On the other hand, 8244 is hideous in every way.

October 27, 201113 yr This one? Yep. The concept of having modular modules which can be interchanged is interesting, but none of the module combinations actually make any sense together. Every combination is an abomination.
October 27, 201113 yr Here is a video off youtube of the older version (8459 which comes with plastic tray.)
October 27, 201113 yr Author Here is a video off youtube of the older version (8459 which comes with plastic tray.) I never knew there was 2 versions of this set!how come?
October 28, 201113 yr I never knew there was 2 versions of this set!how come? I would not say there were two different versions. It was originally released in 1997 as 8459, then it was re-released in 2001 as 8464, and finally 8439 in 2004. They are exactly the same model (except for parts which were updated to new versions), but the packaging is different. The early 2000's were "a dark time for the rebellion" so LEGO was trying to save money by releasing old sets instead of designing new sets. There were a lot of Technic re-releases during this time. You can see this on Technicopedia when there are multiple set numbers grouped together on the same line.
October 28, 201113 yr 8459 is a great set. It has plenty of functions packed into a moderately sized model. The engine with its 4WD drivetrain is a great addition, especially since engines were less common in the 90s than today. I like how the cab steering wheel works as well. That being said, I like the newer 8265 even better. LAs are often of questionable value over pneumatics but in this case, they resulted in a more mechanically complex model. As for 8462, I like that set too. TLG was trying out something different in 1998 and all the Technic releases that year had a distinctive, futuristic look. As a space head, I loved that style, but they have never done it again. The model is a bit simple but is exceptionally well built and lightweight for its size. It was one of the last fully studded models and is a good example of how strong things can be built when you use both studded and studless (pin and axle) connections together.

October 28, 201113 yr So what's the best out of the 3? Like I said, they are all the same. I don't know how you can pick a favorite among 3 identical items. Maybe if you like one box better. Personally, I chose to collect the first one just because it is the original.
