All <insert that tiresome argument> pieces have their uses, but its disappointing to see LEGO continuing their juniorisation trend.

Isn't it costing them heaps more money to create the molds for these kind of pieces?

That would seem like the case. And it probably is, but in TLC's minds producing a huge hunk of plastic SAVES money, when in reality, using normal, readily available pieces would save them the work out of designing and producing new pieces, therefore, making the production of the new pieces cost more money.

Obviously they'd have financial advisers, analysis, accounts, etc. to monitor the expenditure. If it was costing the more to create <insert that tiresome argument> pieces they wouldn't do it, would they? Unless they're that stupid, considering they're trying to cut expenditures.

Maybe the bigger the piece the less molds they need. I dunno... Perhaps we should create a new thread to conitnue this discussion...

I believe that there is already a thread about the dreaded topic of juniorization, anyone who wants to discuss this can go there. I can't find the link just now, but I know it's there somewhere. And I'll leave this topic to the more on-topic posters. :D

That truck is a part of a huge set excavator in real life. In real life, half the height of the wheel is still taller than a 6 foot person. The company that makes those kinds of trucks is called Terex corporation, stock symbo TEX. Here is a link the actual schematics of that huge truck. And yes I love big machines like that :)

They are so huge because the excavators that extract the dirt is in huge amounts and so that both trucks and excavators have to grow in proportion.

Imagine the amount of LEGO you could fit in the back of one of those things!

Shame that LEGO could no better than to design a huge specialised piece for the truck's tray. Aside, from construction vehicles how many other uses for this piece can others find for it?

That is weird. For Austria the reduced price says EUR 20.49 - which has been its price all along since it came out, in toy stores as well as on S@H. I've seen it in toy stores for 19.90 to 20.49 but it never said "on sale". Now the regular price on S@H says EUR 40.98, which can only be joke for 187 pieces with one being a huge specialized piece. Something's not right here...

EDIT: I got a call(!) from LEGO Direct after writing an e-mail and asking about the pricing. They told me that I wasn't the first one, and that they actually had decided to sell it for the reduced price at stores from the get-go but hadn't informed anybody that the price was a reduced one. To avoid further confusion they'll remove the "50 % off" tag.
