I agree that a general history of the Revolword War should be written after Challenge VI, I joked a long time ago that we would probably need a professional historian. (Don't look at me, I'm already writing too many real histories as it is.)

I will definitely help with this; I may get a chance to do some of it before then.

Depending on how the official C6 version goes, that will set up the Historica: Book II period. I think there has been a few previous discussions on that new period, but like I said before, I don't think Challenge I of the new period should begin until at least October.

Agreed, next major challenge shouldn't be until Sept or Oct. We had significant drop-off in participation last July and August. Maybe we could squeeze in a medium-sized challenge in May and June.

Also, it seems that we may need a reorganization of the guilds and judges, including adding a guild helper to each guild to help with administration. Maybe in that manner we can get some more of the guild leaders to come back and participate more.

Good idea. I think that if the administrative burden were spread around a bit more, guildleaders would have more time to participate in other ways. We could also rotate the guild leadership more frequently if necessary, as people feel the need to move on to other things.

I have too many tan bricks to quit Historica now.

Exactly!! Basebricks tells me that I have 648 tan 2x4s, so I'm definitely sticking around.

As long as we're speculating on Historica's future - well maybe (since the next big thing seems like it might be Sci-Fi) we'll get historica 10000 years in the future, and of course, everything Sci-Fi-y...

Yup, I've got to make a regular point of checking out the rest of EB. But it's hard enough just keeping up with GoH.

Seriously though, I think there aren't that many of us that build for free-build points only (in general, it's either to advance your character's story so you can catch up to challenge VI, or - at least this is what I'm doing all the time - tying a build in with some other Challenge/contest/competition, or a combination of the two) - and if there weren't even free-build points offered, I would think that Historica would really get very few builds - what's the point of posting here as well as whatever else you're building for if you won't even get free build points? Personally, I'm not sure we should wait until October for the next thing (depending on how big of a thing you were thinking about, I guess). I really liked DC's idea of one person starting off the story, then leaving it for some one else - that sort of match-up idea really appeals to me, and I bet something like that would be fun to watch even if you didn't participate. And I think a few builder-to-builder face-offs would be cool too...

Those are some good ideas. The chain-story is a great idea, although we'd have to have several of them going, otherwise it will take too long in between builds.

I don't really build for the free-build points. I build because either a) I want to and I have a good idea, or b) I want to participate in some sort of challenge or contest, or c) I want to advance my overall story. I don't even know how many points my free-builds have garnered, so it's a bit hard to get motivated by the points. But I can see how others would be more motivated by this.

As is there's no real rank system within the guilds. That has positives, of course, but I wonder what it would be like if we did have ranks? Just a bit of speculation...

Ranks, badges, titles, etc., some more stuff along these lines would be nice. I think it is motivating for people. But I don't want to GoH to become all about achieving a better rank. Then you've got people just cranking out mediocre MOCs to move up a level.

As for providing ranks, I'd agree though. Some of us have been around here since the beginning, contributed dozens of mocs (19 in my case) and helped to keep this whole thing alive for more than a year now. In other forums all you have to do is produce a mere LDD file in order to be awarded something. So maybe some sort of recognition would help to have people stick around for a little longer.

Agreed. And we thank you for your efforts! I've been around since the beginning too, although I certainly don't think I've done 19 builds. Plus you've maintained that build list, which must be a phenomenal amount of work.

I'd like to see us advance the overall Historica story, and focus more builds on that. I really like the way there have been a bunch of different multi-character stories going on over the past few months, not exactly part of the challenge 6, but more as preludes and sidelines to it. Building a tower here, and a tavern there, etc, is fun, but it's been much better when people have been able to build a good story around their MOC, and it gets really good when multiple people are building out the same storyline or multiple intertwined stories. My hope for post-challenge-6 is that the winning storyline achieves some closure, but also opens up multiple new storylines that set the stage for GoH v2. I guarantee that will be the case if I win  .

Thanks man, but that was actually rougang! And there are quite a number of people who have shelled more mocs than me. I'd thinkig of DG, Eccs, Soccerkid, Legonardo etc. ...

Yeah, I see you're point about the chain story - it would be nice to have just one story going for non-confusion purposes, but then it would also be nice to have a new build at least every other day...

As far as ranks, etc., I was thinking it might be nice to base your rank on the overall quality of your creations, not on how much you've built (we've got titles that cover that already, at least in some of the guilds).

IF the top secret next project is really a GoH like Sci / fi theme, I may have to join that too. I have some pieces for it already. I have almost the complete line (and multiples of many sets) of the exoforce stuff just laying in boxes. It does not sell well on ebay (I thought it would be a hit, so i used my Disney discount and basically stalked the Downtown Disney store for months waiting for deals on that stuff. Low and behold I bought a ton, and it never accrued any real value over the last five years. I guess it wasn't the hit I thought it would be)

It will be hard to split time on two major stories (I clearly can't do both LCC and GoH to the same level now.) I will probably just end up giving more time over here though.

Hmmm....I missed out on the exoforce stuff while I was in my dark ages, but that theme was awesome in my opinion. Perhaps someday I will have to help you unload it

As far as the direction of GoH, I think we definitely need to add some sort of structure going forward similar to the structure that led to this point. It was loose enough to be creative, but there was always something going on globally that affected each guild. I am not sure who would head that up, but it was nice to have some over-arcing storyline that we could all relate to.

I have volunteered in the past to help run challenges and storyline when that dark day comes that our guild leaders ascend into space leaving us poor historicans to our own, I think we could easily have a committee that rotates after each chapter. That could probably keep us going 5 years or so, no problem.

and would you mind to share them?

And yes, most of us want GOH to continue, I'd also willing to put in some effort into the organization process.

I certainly will be staying in Historica. :excited: Only thing is, it will need an ernormous boost. I do feel it is dying a bit.

Agreed! But how?

I think that i´ts great that the Guild Leaders gave us an enemy. That way we can make battle scenes, preparations for war and so on. But war between the guilds is a bad idea I think... The trashtalk is fine, but the enemy should be someone like we have now with Revolword.

I would love to see some more mocs showing our sigfigs travels to the other guilds. Pushing ourselves to build out of our comfort zone and interact more with eachother. Let say that I travel to Kaliphlin to meet DM. I build a moc showing how I come to Mpya Stedor. DM can then build a moc with my sigfig in Mpya Stedor...

More titles and mini challenges like everyday life, ships, quarrys, lumberjacking etc. The titles should be for everyone and not just "in guild titles". That way we could see an Avalonian lumberjack, a Mitgardia one as well as a Kaliphlin one.

Well, I´m tired... Just shooting some ideas for the second phase of GoH!

I'll definitely be staying around and I'm looking forward to doing lots of builds involving other characters, similar to what dG said  (in fact I'm doing something similar now  )

Mini-challenges and such are always fun too :classic:

Just crazy exhausted talk....but, what if we re-invented GoH after the Revolword saga. Placed it one hundred years later. We could have certain major political, geographical and techonlogical(not space, but maybe limited gunpowder) advancements that have altered the landscape and lifestyle in Historica. New characters, new towns, etc...but still our Historica as the foundation and history of the world.

So, kinda like the pirate era? In terms of Lego themes at least.

I was thinking like around late 1500's/ earlier 1600's -ish. But it is probably not going to happen.

I really like the idea of advancing in time, i'd say 50 years is fine though. That would then be around 1500 and we'd have the whole discovery/colonization period ahead of us. I think that should also provide for great building oportunities without reaching too far in the pirate realm. In fact, the ship I'm currently building is rather 1490 than 1450 and I'd hate to take it apart after challenge VI ends. At same time I think dGs ideas also sound really appealing. However, what we need most is a story line that carries us through lets say another two years or so

After the war was over, the Greater Eastgate Article and Rations company was going to "accidentally" stumble on a new piece of land and I was going to do a colonization storyline. I don't see why that could not be opened up for everyone...

We would limit it to about 1300 - 1430s tech, so early Portugal, vikings (reemergence?) but no great warships. Colonization would be like early Spanish attempts at Africa and the Canaries, very little working gunpowder, if any at all. I think it could eventually lead to the guilds entering into "empire wars" down the road. Actually, I have a whole plot that just plunked into my head... oh it is good... I know exactly what the next 6 challenges could be. Yay beer and late night posting!

Coming back to earth... The one problem I see with advancing tech is that we sit in the "classical" castle hotspot right now... Crusades era tech and kingdoms (with merchant houses rivaling venetian status) This is actually the perfect era to cover the most possible versions of castle building... advancing to colonization may take some of the more classic opportunities away.

Just some thoughts from a stressed and tipsy Skaforhire!

we allready have canons and powder, just look at Sirens of Titans! im gonna start using them too after Ch6. alot of mocs allready feature guns (i think one had a lazer? thats a little far fetched though...) but GOH will continue, Ill gladly join whatevers next, but im staying here, I wouldn't mind helping out with organisation either if needed.

I agree with Ska that we shouldn't take GoH too far from the high medieval/high fantasy air it has now. But that doesn't rule out more advanced shipbuilding or limited gunpowder use in my view, I'm just afraid it will limit the castle building techniques. For me as a bit of a fortification nerd, knowing that the enemy would be well supplied with reliable cannons would dampen my desire to build beautiful high thin stone walls and instead make me want to build ugly low earthen bastions...

But that future chapters of GoH moves technoloogy forward seems to be a logical choice, I have always been a bit puzzled by how fantasy worlds almost always seems to be stuck in technological development for millenia. If you want to reinvent your sigfigs by jumping 100 years forward it doesn't sound like a bad idea to me (my half-elf got plenty of years left ;) ), we just need to concider the implications of advancing tech too fast.

I think, and it has been said before by others, that GoH is the hangout place for EB´s castle builders. Not many castle moc´s are shown in the Historic theme forum, instead that´s the place for LOTr and Hobbit moc´s. To take GoH into the renessance and gunpowder feels like a Pirate GoH which feels very far away from my intrest. I want to keep building in the medieval era.

I think it would be great to emerge all these posts and make a new one. "How do you want GoH?". Make some polls on how advanced and in what time frame we want to build in and then discuss the results in that thread.

The AAG has had firearms for quite sometime now. Antyria has cannons. What is wrong with that? The ATC had cannons since the beginning of GOH. That's where Antyria bought their cannons. Gamesworkshop's Warhammer has cannons and guns in their medieval/fantasy universe. Why can't we? We pretty much have everything else.

Posted

I thought that the cannons and firearms in GoH were very unstable and could easily explode. The impressons I got was that we now should enter a new era in time where those things would actually work well... And that era isn´t intresting for me at all..

Posted

When are cannons actually useful? During ship battles and crowded battle fields, right? Laying seige to castles and cities too, I'm guessing. It would lead to more sophisticated battle tactics but we don't have any battles which makes GoH pretty boring. That's really GoH's biggest fault.

I agree, the problem is war between the guilds would be very complicated, since who's to decide who wins? We could maybe have some sort of system, if someone wanted a war they could work it out with the other person (basically an interactive series of MOCs), and then they could decide who should win/what the consequences would be.

I do agree with dG about not going too far into the pirate era, that takes away too much of the castle-building incentive. Fifty yrs later sounds like a good idea to me - it would give us the opportunity of changing figs or not as we liked, and still I think gives us the opportunity to MOC either with or without gunpowder as we like. Of course if we do have inter-guild/character wars than it would be in everyone's best interest to get gunpowder ASAP.

And something occurred to me while I was writing that - wouldn't it be pretty cool if a group of say 10 from any of the guild (or a combination thereof) sort of took over and became the new enemy? Hmm... and I don't even have the excuse of being tired...
