I feel a way to make it fresh for OT fans like me is to look at the original designs and sketches of Ralph McQuarrie.

I'd love to see a new packaging and parts with the feel, design and color schemes Ralph used in his original concept art.

First off,if there was going to be a new star wars t.v. show,I would want it to be about the time between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope seeing how luke and patma grow up, and how the empire grow/how the Republic has deminished. Also,a little bit more desribing how the whole world of star wars turned up-side down even though the story line would have that much to it

Also, even though I have seen all the star wars movies, what does the EU time mean?

It's set in that time period, but I don't think the main characters of the movies play a big role.

They've already done it as packaging in the Darth Vader helmet on the 2007 boxes and as a brick in the white Boba Fett.

What I find most surprising is that the current LEGO Star Wars license ends at the end of 2011 and LEGO hasn't renewed it yet. Didn't the last time LEGO extended it it was a year or two before?

I am sick of Star Wars LEGOs and I know parents are too. Children don't care about LEGOs at all, all they want is the special minifigure found in the $100 set. I wish the theme would end with releasing 60 sets, about 10 per movie, just completely start over, make every ship ever, and then end it.

We've been over this before: The license has been renewed and LSW is not ending.

Sick of Star Wars? Nope. I love LEGO star wars sets, for reasons ranging from the good looks to the excellent parts that come with them.

As for clone wars, that's a little bit of a mixed bag for me. I don't have much problem at all with the clone wars sets, and I actually have found myself quite liking a few of them. The thing with clone wars that bugs me is the high amount of repeats. It's felt like they're releasing a recoloured Jedi Starfighter every year, I think we're up to four now?

Most of the set designs that I don't care for are generally because the ship itself didn't have a great design in the first place. But I think that even if Clone Wars sets were entirely trashy (Which they are not, not close), I still wouldn't mind. Because they still release sets from the movies, and it seems that their work in clone wars has been helping to progress the designs of the other sets as well.

I sort of view it as one big progressive thing, so even though I don't really buy or care for all the Clone Wars sets, I still think that they affect LSW as a whole and I think the effect has been pretty positive!

I just think that if LEGO star wars wasn't around, we would have more LEGO space themes and more sets in them. Without any George Lucas tax...

I like LEGO star wars, but I like it more for the LEGO part than the Star wars part.

But I like Lego star wars - I really do!

All I tried to say is that it goes bad direction.

How can I not to blame prices? They are far too high! Especially here in Poland. You pay 0,5 PLN ~0,17 $USD for a piece - or even more. In normal sets it's 50% cheaper.

About Lukeys: I was speaking in general - not if someone just starts collecting SW sets.

Here are all (i think) the Luke's you could get: http://www.bricklink.com/catalogList.asp?pg=1&q=luke&catLike=W&v=2 22 ! LOL - it's a shame for me.

Aaaaah! I'm sorry, I misunderstood you then.

I agree the price is a little too much, but that's the price of having licensed stuff - not much we can do about it and it doesn't influence the sets or direction of the theme that much in my opinion.

Never sick of Star Wars.

Sometimes other things will pique my interest and I'll put Star Wars aside for awhile, but I never get sick of it.

Exactly my opinion.

I tend to think that my interest is based around Star Wars (and castle) so I may branch out into another theme for a short time (i.e Prince of Persia) but there'll always be at least one SW set in the new wave that will interest me enough to buy it. SW is also a fallback option; if there is nothing I currently like on the market, I will resort to that SW set that is hovering in my mind.

Even if the theme does release a poor wave or just re-hashes of previous sets, I would still buy one, partly for sentimental reasons  but also because there has not yet been a wave, in my mind, that hasn't produced a good set.

I can see how collectors from the early days make be sick of it. I know how much the remakes of sets annoy you guys. Me too, Im annoyed with the remake of the Sith infiltrator. But the remakes make it possible for people like me, who have only started in the past 4-5 years to buy the same ship but without having to pay 3x the original price for it. I think remakes are what is driving the them on as well as CW. I would much rather have a remake of a set than some obscure ship from the EU. EU sets just don't sell well as seen by the TIE crawler and TIE Defender.

As for CW, I don't mind it really. I think the problem with the TV series is that they try to get everything into a half an hour episode. Sometimes its just not the right way to approach it. And they try to jazz it up with all new ships that really don't look great at all. However Lego does do a good job on recreating them in Lego and they really keep true to what Lucas arts made. The sub-theme, in my opinion has made some terrific sets like the AAT, TX-130, ARC-170 and RAG. Sometimes it the minifigs that are lacking. Im on the fence about the CW faces. Yoda, Cad Bane and Nute Gunray all have good looking heads. They look fine CW, but Obi Wan and Anakin don't. Maybe that just because we see them to often and are boring, or perhaps they are just really ugly.

Price is a definite issue for me though. In New Zealand price are about double what the US prices are and its worse in other countries. Though the prices are usually around the same price marks, so its easy to guess how much if will be by looking at it. But I absolutely hate it when you Americans complain that its gone up a mere $5. $5 is nothing compared to what we pay. And then you complain you don't get them first. Sometimes we have to wait 1-1.5 months after you. Its not fair that you think its you that gets ripped off however you dont know how much we do really pay.

I think CW is probably just a fad. It will fade out in 2-3 years and will keep the license going. But I really don't know what the longevity of the license after CW. But maybe with the other TV show coming around the corner, Star Wars will get a breath of fresh air and carrying on for many years to come. But I definitely know what I will be doing after Star Wars. Lots of MOCing, buying bricks and town sets. Moving back to what you could say is the heart of lego. But Lego will sure be in a bit of a downfall when Star Wars stops.

I don't mind the rereleases; a lot of times the set is made smoother and sometimes it's one I ddn't get originally, like with the LAAT/i. Even when I've got the old one, like with the ARC-170, I don't really mind but I won't get the new one. And sometimes TLG totally aces the remake, like with the MTT. I'll bet there are very very few to no members of EB who would rather have the old MTT. It's when the remakes are CW-fied that bothers me. I know that process starts with Lucas Animation and their designs, but I really don't like some of the CW-fied remakes. The only thing that makes me 'sick' is when the set is rereleased with pupiled faces, stickers, and/or flick-fire missiles.

Well, I guess I'll join in as well!

For me, I am a fan of PT, OT, and the EU. I grew up around the entire series, and for ships, I prefer the ships from the OT, but set "pieces" and locales mainly from the PT because I believe there are so many places that haven't been explored from there, i.e. Coruscant, Geonosis, Kamino, etc. I'm tired of all the rehashing of sets, like the vehicles, but seriously, what other vehicles from the true canon are left?

For the CW, I just want the generic minifigures. Give me the stinking clone troopers, TLC! Just a simple battlepack (with preferably more than 4 clones) to stock up on (and not too high of prices and enough in stock that the little kiddies can't get 'em) for the clones, that's all I care about. I consider the CW show and sets sub-par for LEGO, but if there is a set that is appealing, I'll pick it up, and I'm excluding the bps on this one.

I mean, the PT *oh2* (and I don't care what people think of the story) had great locations, as I said before, and would love some official sets, even if they're minis, that really give some of the flavor of the different cultures. OT, some locales as well, but maybe some *cough* UCS *cough* sets for well designed vehicles.

On the EU side, please, I'll easily take those. I'd love a new Rogue Shadow a bit more to scale and with considerably more minifigures (more Junos with better looks, please  ). They could always go to the Thrawn Trilogy (and that will also get the little kiddies a bit more into reading...), the Yuuzhan Vong wars, the early Republic, and of course the new show when it airs

So no, I'm not sick of Star Wars, Star Wars LEGO, or LEGO. My love for SW was recently rekindled with more passion a few months back, and it's not leaving. But what I am sick of, is the cartoony minifigures (regular fleshies are just fine), the re-used sets, the OVER-used cartoony figs, and the same lack of flare and style we've had for the past few years.

Posted

Looks like the CW trend of LSW is getting a thorough beatdown from other fans eh? What I don't really understand is how other fans are having a hard time accepting the fact that TLG is merely adapting its sets based on the current market. I seriously would like to see 20 years into the future (when the CW series is ancient history, and the OT/PT are prehistoric) to see if these fans continue to complain about the lack of OT/PT sets (and by that time CW sets). I know I may be in the minority who happen to like CW as much as the OT/PT movies, but at least I'm not being a perceived elitist and resistant to change.

I love Star Wars sets, but I don't know why they're still just building sets just for the original trilogy and clone wars. Just from the computer games, we've had the Jedi Knight and Old Republic games and also the mmorpg coming out some time next year (mention if there are any more), they could easily make sets from those, although we did get one set for the force unleashed, which I think was a pretty decent designed set. And seeing as Lego have a license to design star wars models, why not come up with their own storyline to create a series of sets around or at least use one of the many stories in the expanded universe?

Posted

I don't mind the clone wars at all, It actually fills up the events between AOTC and during ROTS..

Sure its a cartoon but its the best political cartoon ever made so..it kinda makes sense for LEGO to make sets based on it

Not to mention how old the movies are..But this will hopefully change in 2 years after the release of TPM..we might have a lot of PT/OT sets for the next 6 years so I'm just going to be patient about.

Also the flesh tones are what makes a licensed set nowadays and I wouldn't be surprised if they changed all the lego sets with flesh tones on the figures..though I would hate that..

So yea i'm kinda sick of it but this will change in two years so..I'm just waiting.

For me anyhow

I was thinking more of an entire line based off of McQuarrie's work rather than just a freebie white Boba Fett.

The only way to get sick of Star Wars is to be too obsessed with it in the first place :vader:

You may be right.

Children don't care about LEGOs at all, all they want is the special minifigure found in the $100 set. I wish the theme would end with releasing 60 sets, about 10 per movie, just completely start over, make every ship ever, and then end it.

I don't know exactly how true that is. Personally, I buy Star Wars sets regardless of minifigs or exactly what it is, unless they are either too expensive or don't contain good enough minifigs for its price. As for making every ship, do you mean remake every existing set? That doesn't seem very likely, though I would like to have the line ending with major remakes (AT-TE, AT-AT, LAAT/i, Millennium Falcon and so on).

As for remakes, I'm quite happy that there are sets being remade. As I'm a relatively late collector, I've missed lots of decent sets, and many that I've wanted. Remaking sets should improve the actual set as well as giving people who missed out the opportunity to own whatever it is. There are some fairly recent sets that I missed out on that I couldn't get just because of their price (like the above mentioned AT-TE and LAAT/i which I really wanted). Sure, remakes might take the place of a brand-new set or might be slightly worse than the original, but I don't mind that.

Finally, to add onto the existing Clone Wars argument, even if there are many redundant Clones, vehicles and the like, does it really matter if they're made into sets? As I've said, I'll mostly buy every set whether they are Clone Wars or not. If Original Trilogy and Prequel Trilogy sets are made instead of Clone Wars sets, after a few years there won't be many iconic vehicles and sets left. The Clone Wars series is still being continued, so there may be a vehicle that everyone suddenly loves despite not liking the Clone Wars. The fact that the Clone Wars is being focused upon may also see remakes of sets from the trilogies that feature in the Clone Wars in a different form. I'm just glad that the Clone Wars exists at all, so I can continue my Clone Trooper collection. :classic:

To me, the LEGO Star Wars (LSW) line has been going within the wrong path since 2008 :sadnew:. I am not a fan who blames the CW for how far the line has gone but one who can't ignore the poor decisions the TLC has been making lately. I still remember that year with my AFOL eyes as the one who almost pulled me out of this hobby (Just by looking the frequency of my posts pre-post 2008 and how active I have been in the forums can give you an idea). I don't hate TCW-based sets, in fact, in 2008 most of my purchases were TCW-based sets, from the Magnaguard Starfighter to the Republic Fighter Tank. I don't hate TCW series neither, I browse each episode since the series started. If I don't have a problem with neither the show or the sets than why I was pulled out in such a drastic way may you ask, well, it is probably because each of my wishes have been full-filled since 2008, leaving some of the greatest points from the line and changing them for lackluster new ones. Battlepacks? Check, EU-based sets? Check, Tons of new molds? Check. No more small-priced sets like the Twin Pod Cloud Car? Check, Too many TCW-based sets and EU stuff? Check, Even more pricey sets coming each year? Check. I am throughly disappointed with the direction the TLC has taken as you may see :cry_sad:. I wished for the TLC to release battlepacks back in 2006 but I never wanted to see them stopping the production of small-sized sets like the Clone Scout Walker. I wished for the existence of more EU-based stuff but I never thought they would almost focus solely on them while leaving behind most of the PT and OT-based stuff. I wished for new and more exciting minifigures but I never wanted to pay buckets of money to get some nearly unknown and obscure characters. It was great to see the TLC taking a new direction but they steered the wheel of their ship to one side while forgetting the side that made the line such a success in the first place. The future is not a single bit brighter and the sad thing is that I wished for all of it.

semi-trollish.

Trollish? I love it!

This discussion sure has picked up heat! :look:

I agree with Roncanator, the remakes are annoying, but they make it possible for newbies to start collecting. Mind you if they do remakes like the sith infiltrator (i wasn't a fan of this set) then I find it annoying, but remaking the CTT and some of the other better vehicals can alot of the time be an improvement to the original, so in someways it is good. :sweet:

SW has to find something else to keep the franchise fresh and wealthy. How does Lego continue with SW if there's only OT and PT? Re-re-re-release of X Wings & MF every year?

CW adds a new look to SW. CW are targeted to the next generation just like how OT appeals to the older generation when they are kids. I'm not sure if the current generation will watch OT and find it cool. OT wasnt as epic in terms of the battles compared to PT and CW.

Times has changed and several X Wings, B Wings, Y Wings and A Wings attacking a Death Star might seen epic in the 70s but in all honestly, it pales in comparison in current standards (Battle of Hoth is still cool though.. :p).

Kids like epic battles, and numerous clones and driods appeal to them. They appeals to me as an adult too!! LOL...

CW sets has their hits and misses. But they keep the SW world alive by creating new starships, worlds and characters.

If SW dont continue to evolve, somebody else will comes in and fill that gap. It might be a good thing after all since most people here still stuck in the OT era.

Posted

To me what has ruined the SW line, other than lots of characters, is the non legoishness of the sets now. The huge amount of accuracy is OK on the UCS sets but I quite the old blocky clever sets, like the old Sith infiltrator, or the old millenium falcon, the new ones are two stylized and overpriced. Don't get me wrong I love some new sets like the new MTT (the old MTT was perfect for old Lego) but when you start looking a figs like the new grievous and his guards, or new sets like the twilight, which sacrifices a good build, scale, and ascetics for a technic system inside *sigh*.

This may seem like a rant but I can cope with new Lego still. Reading some peoples comments is like someone kicking a puppy to death  poor TLG cant defend its self from rants of that magnitude.

Posted

I can see why long time collectors may be getting sick of so many re-releases, but you do have to remember that not everyone buys LEGO all the time. A lot of people may have missed older sets or only just started collecting. I only started buying sets in 2008 so it's not just for the younger crowd, I've been pretty happy with the selection of sets we've had. But we do seem to be getting less OT sets, the 2011 lineup is almost totally absent of them and I think that's because they've decided to go with more new Clone Wars sets rather than re-releasing so many old ones.. and I think this is a good move. TCW gives us a chance to get more brand new sets with new characters and in a few more years they can revisit some of the older sets that need updating.. such as the X-Wing.

If you're sick of it, stop buying them for a while. There's only so much they can diversify with the licence and focusing on TCW is a clear attempt to do this.

Lego is a business that makes toys for children (which some adults have decided to collect). The Star Wars line has and is (in my opinion) the biggest cash cow in the Lego product line.

It is logical that Lego will strive to provide more accuracy as the years progress (and production processes too). People who started collecting LSW in the years gone by see the sets of today as too complicated and accurate. Those who have just started collecting will probably see the sets of 2020 as too accurate and so on. People who like OT see CW as too childlike/commercialized/ etc. In 10-15 years time Lucas Films will probably (read: hopefully) bring out something that concentrates in a new era in SW and the CW fans of today will probably see that as too rubbish(or whatever else). Nostalgia for "the old days" always occurs and Lego has to continue in its path because it would never be able to keep everyone happy.

Personally I think that the OT period has been done to death. Nothing else that Lego could bring out apart from repeats. Still in order to satisfy the "old" fans Lego does continue to bring out a set or two from the OT era a year. The PT does still have potential simply because of the larger variety of characters and vehicles that it presented. And the CW is an extension of the PT which is introducing even more characters and vehicles and giving Lego an opportunity to release fresh stuff (and particularly new characters). At the moment CW is all the rage with kids (and some grown up fans too) and it is obvious and logical that Lego will pursue in that direction to satisfy the market. Personally I collect LSW minifigures only and am very happy with Lego's new sets.

In all honesty I think that you can never have enough of SW and I hope that in the future LucasFilms and Lego SW will continue to bring out new and exciting stuff in their respective areas.

...not to mention the insane amount of new characters and specialized clones...

That is what also bothers me the most, but probably teh thing which makes George Lucas ern the most of money. More different characters, more different things to sell.

I'm not really sick of Star Wars itself, I'm just not that mush interested anymore. I only but OT sets and if next year there are less, so be it. There are other great sets to spend money on.

The only thing I'm really afraid if is that George Lucas will one day make a remake of teh first Star Wars movies and give teh Strormtroopers al kinds of different colours, strippes etc...

I am collecting LSW since 1999 - am I sick of it? Not at all. I was the one who wanted more detailed sets and more detailed minifigs (on par with Indy etc.) and I got exactly what I wanted. My latest AT-ST looks like the king of the universe besides the very first one. Actually, I don't display old stuff anymore. Sometimes I even sold old sets and minifigs to make room for new sets and figs.

Sure, some sets are too expensive and an obvious rip-off, so I wait for a bargain. Some sets are worse than their older iterations, so I don't get them. Some sets are boring, so I don't get them. I did that since the beginning and I'm fine with it.

Could there be more sets? For a mainly-OT-collector there were some hard years with few sets - but there were always sets for the OT. Every single year. It's not a matter of course to get sets from 30 year old movies I think, and I am happy for every single set. 2010 for example didn't have anything new, and so far 2011 looks very Clone-ish, but the brilliant 2009 excuses all these faults: Echo Base, Endor, Home One and Tantive IV were probably the best OT sets ever made.

Am I sick of the CW? Since some time I am really into the EU comics and stories, I like to read some comics and novels here and then and like to browse though wookieepedia. I like the first cartoon series a lot, it's very nice and shows the ships and vehicles in the same coolness as ANH and ESB did, what made us all want a Falcon or X-Wing. Good job. But the new Clone Wars is the worst thing ever: A poor rip off from famous movies story-wise, and the design is terrible. I don't understand the designer's obsession for ugly noses on the characters, perhaps I don't get the joke or I am too inspired by japanese comic style but it is just bad.

The first batches of the sets had a nice design with very nice play features, but I have to admit that I only posess the LAAT/i and a couple of battle packs - and I modded it and the CW figs to an E2-E3 ship. Real Lego look, no cartoon look. I thought about buying the Twilight cause it's a nice ship but didn't make it for half the price and don't want to pay todays price. I have no intention at all to buy any future CW set cause I don't like their recycled and poor design (on Lucas side) plus the minifigs don't appeal to me. Except Ahsoka. I don't have her yet but i think she is too cute. I mean the minifig, not her in the show or whatever. I just think she is sweet and I should get her somehow. Otherwise, I couldn't care less about the CW.
