Niku Posted February 8, 2013 Posted February 8, 2013 @Infernum: Thanks, the orange thing is what's left of my FAPC entry. I'll post a pic of the building layout later today, it's inspired by SoT Edit: I'm quite a bit farther than that now. Thanks for this picture, I always wondered how these kind of constructions were made. =)
kabel Posted February 8, 2013 Posted February 8, 2013 Come on dude, going to Florida in February? It's all about spring break, admit it! Best cheese and chocolate - definetely Switzerland, I have to second that! Best beer in Belgium - are you kidding? I mean I like raspberries, but not in my beer!

soccerkid6 Posted February 8, 2013 Posted February 8, 2013 Thanks for this picture, I always wondered how these kind of constructions were made. =) You're very welcome Come on dude, going to Florida in February? It's all about spring break, admit it! Best cheese and chocolate - definetely Switzerland, I have to second that! Best beer in Belgium - are you kidding? I mean I like raspberries, but not in my beer! Well actually it's not during spring break for me so I have to miss a week of classes but sacrifices must be made looking good SC! and yeah ill give the swiss the chocolate for sure, I do think that the cheese could be matched though, it is great. I myself don't drink hardly anything as i'm sort of underage according to the law. wait you've never flown? Nope, living on a farm doesn't lend to traveling a lot, my dad flew for the first time just a few months ago. Some of my older brothers and my sister have flown several times though on mission trips
Kai NRG Posted February 8, 2013 Posted February 8, 2013 ...Nope, living on a farm doesn't lend to traveling a lot, my dad flew for the first time just a few months ago. Some of my older brothers and my sister have flown several times though on mission trips Yeah, I probably wouldn't have flown nearly as much if it weren't that my parents are missionaries. That's given me about 5 flights every 4 years or so...
Legonardo Posted February 8, 2013 Posted February 8, 2013 Yeah, I probably wouldn't have flown nearly as much if it weren't that my parents are missionaries. That's given me about 5 flights every 4 years or so... yours too? well my parents stopped being missionaries 2 years ago, due to my littlest brother and community/missionary life became a bit much, but we would have my dad fly every quarter of a year to some interesting country, and every two or three my mum did too so I'd say I myself have been to europe, asia, America (well I can't remeber that, was too young) multiple times due to that. my dad gets it the best though. your life is awesome
Brickington Posted February 8, 2013 Posted February 8, 2013 I myself don't drink hardly anything as i'm sort of underage according to the law. Smoothly said my friend, smoothly said...
gedren_y Posted February 8, 2013 Posted February 8, 2013 (edited) @ SK: You'll be right in my area. I live in Archer, about 12 miles south-west of Gainesville. Here's the skinny on the Lego buying opportunities. There are three Walmarts in Gainesville: one standard on Archer Road, one Supercenter on 13th street next to Sam's Club and another Supercenter (larger than the other) on the northern end towards the fairgrounds. All carry Lego on dedicated isles (except games and books), though the restock tends to lag. They sometimes get polybags. There is one Target on Archer Road (further south than Walmart). They carry CMFs, but spread out the Lego by theme. For Super Heros or CMFs you have to go down the action figure isle. Star Wars usually has half of one side of an isle, shared with an action theme and Hero Factory; with City, bulk brick and duplo across the isle. The tend to keep Kre-O and Megablocks on the same side as City, but keep the Mario figs (K-Nex) with the action figures. Friends is in the doll section. Games are obviously kept on the games isle, perpendicular to all the other isles. Books are in the children's book section. Sometimes you can find special Target branded lego sets (usually the dog) near the front counters or gift-wrapping/card section. Post Valentines, you might be able to find some. Also on Archer Road, near Target, is Barnes & Noble. They usually have Architecture and licensed lego, but occasionally carry the current Space theme (usually behind the counter, ask). They also carry a some of the books, with figs or Brickmaster. They also carry Brickjournal. Another Archer Road spot is a little outside Gainesville, Hobbytown USA. They carry some Lego, mostly Duplo, but occasionally they'll have some of the other lines. They carry the Warhammer gaming figurines and accessories. I know some people use these for custom fig accessories. You can probably get good advice on painting ABS and buy what you need there. Hardcore customizers' dream. Florida Bookstore, of which there are two (one on campus and one on 13th street) carry some Lego. I haven't been there in quite a while, but their staff are willing to help you find what you need. On Newberry Road, there is a K Mart that has a dedicated spot for Lego (except games and books). Their selection can be a bit sparse, but they get some Creator sets that Walmart doesn't. Also on Newberry Road is TRU. It is at the back end of the second half of the Oaks Mall (up the hill). They usually have all the current range (except Target exclusives) and have two Lego dedicated sections across the store from one another. They also have the big promotions. The big drawback is MARK-UP! At least 10%, maybe more. Further east on Newberry Road is Books-A-Million. Most of their Lego can be found in the Children's section. Usually licensed, some Duplo and some of the instruction books. You can also find the educational Technic here. Check the bargain's section for Lego, sometimes marked 60% off MSRP. They also get some Target dedicated sets off season. Publix, of which there are at least four in and around Gainesville, sometimes have small sets, but this is rare. If you are in there, look, but don't expect. Of all the places to buy Lego in Gainesville: Walmart, Target and K Mart have prices often just below TLG's Shop-at-Home. From $0.01 to $0.04 less. This may not seem like much, but if you buy in bulk it adds up. They also have more sales on Lego in the off-season. Plus no shipping, unless you don't have room in your suitcases for Lego on your return trip. If you do have to ship it home, remember USPS does not add tax to your shipping costs, TLG does. (Space bags can be wonderful things.) Hope this helps you the planning for your trip. Edited February 8, 2013 by gedren_y
Brickington Posted February 8, 2013 Posted February 8, 2013 How would you use War-hammer figurines for LEGO?
gedren_y Posted February 8, 2013 Posted February 8, 2013 (edited) How would you use War-hammer figurines for LEGO? There are several customizers over at the Brickarms forum who mod them with body wear and weapons parts. They get really detailed. These are for those who have no problem with cutting Lego for a specific look. One of them even turns the basic male hair into short mowhawks. Edited February 8, 2013 by gedren_y
NiceMarmot Posted February 8, 2013 Posted February 8, 2013 I'm looking forward to flying. It definitely is pretty cool the first few times. After a while it becomes routine like anything else, and then all the hassles start to bother you. I used to fly for work every week, out Monday AM, back Thursday night, and that was way too much. Now I only fly a few times a year. However, living in California now, we have some pretty good scenery to fly over. One of the standard flight paths east takes us right over Yosemite Valley, and another takes us right over Lake Tahoe; never get tired of staring out the window at the mountains. I'd love to get my pilot's license someday; that would be way cool. If you get on the plane fairly early, tell the flight attendant it's your first flight, and ask if they'll let you go up to the cockpit and check it out and talk to the pilot. They're usually fairly friendly unless they're running late. And try to get a window seat if you can!
Maxim I Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 (edited) Sorry, but best chocolate and best cheese already belongs to Switzerland @SK: Your wip looks very impressive! I'm very excited to see the finished MOC @Infernum: Nice little vignette! Come on dude, going to Florida in February? It's all about spring break, admit it! Best cheese and chocolate - definetely Switzerland, I have to second that! Best beer in Belgium - are you kidding? I mean I like raspberries, but not in my beer! Let's see: Cote D'or, Neuhaus, Leonidas, ... They are all founded in Belgium About the cheese, well, it's an hard one, because I really like Chimay, Maredsous, Breydel, ... (all Belgium), but the best cheeses are still French (Brie & Chaume) And about beer: Seriously, you are talking about something we Belgians even don't consider as a beer (that thing with raspberries is for girls)... Duvel, Leffe, Chimay, Grimbergen, Hoegaarden, Stella Artois, Jupiler, Tongerlo, Westvleteren, (edit:) Westmalle, (edit:) Orval, ... Edited February 9, 2013 by DaMaximus

kabel Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 Duvel, Leffe, Chimay, Grimbergen, Hoegaarden, Stella Artois, Jupiler, Tongerlo, Westvleteren, ... you don't really want me to counter this list with a list of German beers, do you? As for the whole beer thing, beer, good food and mocing are just one thing, couldn't do without!
Maxim I Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 you don't really want me to counter this list with a list of German beers, do you? As for the whole beer thing, beer, good food and mocing are just one thing, couldn't do without! That was a list of our most praised beers (I forgot Orval & Westmalle, shame on me). I didn't mentionned the less popular beers (like Maes, Kasteelbier, .... for example). I do have to admit that the German beers are not that bad (German is also known for their beers). And I really enjoyed them on my trip through Germany. But still, the best beers are from Belgium
kabel Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 but hey, you don't even have a beer law, so how could you possibly have the best beers?
Maxim I Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 but hey, you don't even have a beer law, so how could you possibly have the best beers? You need to be at least 16 before you may start drinking beer (in public events ) Heave liquor (like Wordka etc.) has a minimum age of 18 And a beer law is stupid, most of our beers are older than the state (of Belgium) itself (as Belgium was founded in 1830)
soccerkid6 Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 Just have the bigger building and some finishing touch to do on the landscape, this came together a lot faster than I expected. Any other Mitgardians started on their entries for Challenge VI?
kabel Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 yep, currently doing my indoor scene which is coming along rather nicely
Infernum Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 Two days ago I started building my Cedrica Gate MOC, and I think it's coming along great! I'll snap a WIP photo.
kabel Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 speaking of wip shots: man, how much I hate this camera ...
Captain Settle Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 The best chocolate is from Belgium solely because of Guylian Shells, the best chocolates in the world. Nice WIP shots kabel. I can't wait to see the finished product and the walls and floors look very good.
soccerkid6 Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 @kabel: Looking good, I like the plates in the wall
gedren_y Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 As a teetotaler, I don't care who has the best beer, but chocolate is another story. Are we just talking about sweet chocolate, or can I mention spicy Mexican chocolate? The original chokalotl drink was spicy, not sweet. It was the Europeans that added sugar. I have been known to eat a bar of semi-sweet chocolate with spicy chips. Who has the best citrus chocolate?
Captain Settle Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 Well enough about chocolate cause' lets be honest, It's all 'bout the cookies!
