ZCerberus Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 There are issues with LDD or any digital version for purposes of scoring. It removes photography as a skill for judgement and allows a builder access to parts and quantities they could not get otherwise. It also allows for physics defying structures and connections that are unfair to other builders using "real" LEGO. However, I do NOT want to exclude people from participating in building merely because they do not have access to their bricks. Maybe a practical solution would be to allow LDD for free builds but limit the maximum number of points they could score to something that is below what "real" LEGO would score or limit the number of LDD entries accepted from a builder. I say build with LDD for FREE BUILDS (though the challenges are over for the immediate future they will NOT be accepted for those) but know the points will be restricted when we figure it out.
soccerkid6 Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 (edited) @ZC: That sounds like a very reasonable solution Here's a WIP pic of my build, should be pretty easy to tell what it is Edited May 16, 2013 by soccerkid6
Yooha Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 @Yooha; A response within 24 hours isn't too bad in my opinion. But I think you're well informed right now, so most welcome! The point was not to be answered faster, but to have answers from many people. Free build looks okay, I didn't know that there are points in the 1st place Just showing what I can do is fun itself - but telling the truth even I don't know what I can do.
Yooha Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 Meet Lasvor Nirhad, the world-famous herbalist, pharmacist and warrior. He has been wandering in the mountains and woods for decades, collecting herbs and other ingredients for medicines and healing potions. He is also a skilled and fierce soldier, but his true power is healing the wounds of his comrades in battle. And now he would be proud to fight for the glory of Mitgardia!
Simon_S Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 Welcome to Mitgardia! You made a perfect guild choice and your Sigfig looks very good !
Kai NRG Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 @SK - somewhere in Cedrica? That style is reminiscent of Garmadon's late build... @Yooha, neat fig! (Makes me wish I got the Celtic warrior even more...)
soccerkid6 Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 @Yooha: Cool fig and excellent intro, looking forward to seeing more
Gideon Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 Welcome Yooha, or should I say Lasvor Nirhad? Did you find GoH because of all the awesome ch VI entries? :)
gedren_y Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 About LDD builds, I did one (http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=78643) just because I had some ideas about making plants with parts in colors they don't appear in. I didn't give much thought to scoring, but I did get some good responses about the techniques I used.
Garmadon Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 (edited) Welcome to Mitgardia, Yooha (and all the rest). "Retaking Cedrica" is up now: http://www.eurobrick...showtopic=82310 Edited May 10, 2013 by Garmadon
Str0ngbad Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 (edited) I apologize for the picture quality. I'm using my phone and I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing but I figure this is a learning process so I might as well get on with it. I, Khor II, have come to pledge the support of the dwarven kingdom of Thronghar to the guild of Mitgaurdia on behalf of King Thindir. For centuries beyond remembering we have lived beneath the surface of the Great Mountains in the south of Mitgardia. When the guild first established a presence here, we made ourselves scarce and took to fortifying our expansive kingdom of stone for well do we know of the dark desire in some men’s breast to conquer and force their will on others. We are a proud people who have kept to the old ways and we feared that and more would be taken from us. Yet as tribe after tribe raised the Mitgardian banner and still retained its distinctiveness, it became clear that this fear was unfounded. Still, we remained; out of sight and out of mind. Only recently, when the rumors of devastation and calamity reached our ears did the king begin to question our long held position. Did we not share a responsibility for the fate of the land as a whole? Could even we expect to be left alone if such a great evil went unchecked? Regardless, there was little we could do with the elemental storms raging all around us. Still the king ordered our army to stand ready to march near the main gate should the opportunity arise. When the storm subsided, the king sent me to find how we might aid in the fight only to learn to our great shame that Historica was saved at the cost of many lives while we waited in the dark. That is ended today. Whatever we can do to help rebuild Mitgaurdia shall be done. We have an inexhaustible supply of granite as well as masons whose skill is unsurpassed. Should the hard-won peace not last, our smithys and armoury are also at your disposal and lest you think the elves can do anything we can’t, dwarven runes are as fine an enchantment as anything those pointy-ears scratch on. If there is any other way that we might be of assistance and make our place among you, please let me know. I shall remain here in Valholl for as long as you have use of me. (Here are a couple of terrible pictures of an early WIP with a few dwarves. I am not sure which version [colors] to continue with and would greatly appreciate any suggestions for how to improve anything. That's half the reason I'm here after all ) http://www.flickr.co.../in/photostream http://www.flickr.co.../in/photostream Edited May 10, 2013 by Str0ngbad
Kayne Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 Nice intro Str0ngbad! As for the WIP's, my personal preference leads me to favor the grey one. If I were you and if I had the pieces, I would go with the Dark Bley one on bottom, but put in some Light Bley for sides where you have the diamond mosaic look.
soccerkid6 Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 @Strongbad: Great intro, and I second Kayne's proposal about the colors
Simon_S Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 Nice build! The snake next to the door is a perfect touch! Does the house have an interior?
Sir Edwyn Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 @ soccerkid, hey I was going to build that portion! Oh well.
soccerkid6 Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 @Sir Edwyn: Woops, didn't realize you were still interested in building that Well I suppose other cities could have similar structures, I thought it would be a logical place for our characters to meet
Gideon Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 Welcome Str0ngbad Khor II, great to see some more of the dwarves daring to engage in surface business! Your help in the defense of Historica is greatly appreciated! In Kaliphlin dwarves are not uncommon, but I see that it is beneath the mountains of Mitgardia the might of the dwarven kingdoms are strongest. I apologize for the picture quality. I'm using my phone and I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing but I figure this is a learning process so I might as well get on with it. Good approach! As with any camera, go for good lighting. Preferrably natural (outside) or at least ample incandescent light. Fluorescent lighting/low energy lightbulbs tend to distort the colors badly.
Str0ngbad Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 (edited) Thanks guys! Sir Gideon, I will try to get some pictures today or tomorrow outdoors. It was rainy yesterday and I was too impatient to wait. Kayne and Soccerkid, thank you for the suggestion. To be clear, do you mean sprinkling in some Lt Bley or using all Lt Bley around the stonework on the sides? Yooha, way to get building in a hurry! I really like your supports for the second story and the way you built the dresser inside. Edited May 10, 2013 by Str0ngbad
Kayne Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 My thoughts are to maintain the dark bley for the rockwork, but it appears to have a mosaic effect with some diamond shapes(slopes) to the left and right of the main hall. That is what I would make Light Bley. I will put a note around it on your Flickr so you can see what I mean.
Sir Edwyn Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 @Sir Edwyn: Woops, didn't realize you were still interested in building that Well I suppose other cities could have similar structures, I thought it would be a logical place for our characters to meet no, don't worry, I wasn't upset! Anyway, yeah that sounds like a good idea, but let's not post details in public. .
Cara Posted May 11, 2013 Posted May 11, 2013 (edited) (Here are a couple of terrible pictures of an early WIP with a few dwarves. I am not sure which version [colors] to continue with and would greatly appreciate any suggestions for how to improve anything. That's half the reason I'm here after all ) I'm going to take the other view but with a few caveats! I like the black arch. I think it gives just enough sense of darkness/mood to the scene. It picks up the black weaons really well. BUT it looks too blocky as is. The problem with black is that it doesnt photograph well for a MOC and looks miles better in real life. If you stuck with the black and broke up the square lines I think it works. So for example, change the outside traingles of the mosaic to black so the mosaic shows a grey diamond, or change the pattern so its a grey star. Not a square - nothing square. Similarly across the top change the current grey to black and keep just those diamonds and whatever is inside them grey. My only other thought is how it would look if the walls in the arched space behind those axes were light grey instead of dark grey but that might be too much pop. Edited May 11, 2013 by Cara
Str0ngbad Posted May 11, 2013 Posted May 11, 2013 (edited) Kayne, I like the suggestion. The ONE person who had enough is in Germany so it will be a little while before I get to try it. I ordered 2/5 of Bricklink's entire stock of that part. Cara, thanks for the suggestions. I'll play around with that tonight if I have any of the black slopes. Edited May 12, 2013 by Str0ngbad
