Lego Pinocchio Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 What about a depiction of guild mythology. I think we can all get on board with that. Sample Contest rules - Depict a myth for Kaliphlin's past. Give a short write up of the myth and display a MOC that relates to it. (Or we could do a series of small MOCs, like a comic strip). MOC size 32x32 maximum, or 16x16 panels (max 5) if you are doing a series of MOCs to depict the legend / myth. At the end of two / three weeks we can put it to a forum poll to determine the winner... Or SI can just determine the winner. Sorry, that is all I have at the moment - I am a little tipsy from a Fat Tuesday party. :) I like this idea, I already have an idea for a moc. The myth idea sounds good! I think a two week period would be a good length for mini-challenges. I agree.

Scubacarrot Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 I like the idea of making a story, with a few mocs to illustrate.
robuko Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Myths and MOCs. Brilliant, Ska. 2 weeks sounds just right (Although that means 1 for me, I am off to Japan in 10 days). 32x32 fits my idea very well, and I would love to do 5 panels but time-wise that is unrealistic. Maybe 2 32x32s and 2 16x16s for 4 panels? At a pinch I could maybe get it down to 24x24. Should it be ancient, or could it be a little backstory of how Rasputin became President of the Board? DC has hinted that challenge 3 will be posted today. I think it`s a bit too soon for me but I know others will be raring to go, hope the deadline is not too soon. Ska, you had some really interesting and thoughtful posts about the Historica metagame on the CC forum, did you share them with the guild leaders here? (runs off to myth bricks and weeps at the thought of dismantling the Abyssan embassy)
Gabe Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 (edited) Hi all; I wasn't too happy with parts of my embassy build, so i went back and rebuilt the top two floors. Hopefully now it is a bit more cohesive and has clearer transitions for the eye to follow. Anyway, here are the original and the revised versions side by side: I've edited my original post with more pics of the revisions - i'm interested to hear what you all think of the changes. ps. Btw, i made sure to indicate that the revised version was not submitted in time for the embassy challenge! Edited February 22, 2012 by gabe
Si-MOCs Posted February 22, 2012 Author Posted February 22, 2012 Guild Myth challenge it is! ! Let's give two weeks (I'm sure Rasputin will make due ) and leave it at 32x32 and 5x 16x16 for panels. We don't want to make these builds too big In case you haven't noticed, we have made each challenge more and more difficult - so you will have ample time to do this and the challenge. Gabe you perfectionist you :P It is a lot more cohesive. Though I still maintain your original was pretty good too But yeah it's slightly more awesome than it was before.
Kayne Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Gabe - I really liked your original embassy, but I do think that the revisions look better. I really like the curtained look of the second top-most floor in the new version SI - I'll see what I can do for that challenge. About 10 days ago I started a free build for the guild that is 32x96. I will have to finish that up before I can move on due to brick constraints. Hopefully I can complete both, if not I will just submit the big one for everyone to enjoy, and then I will enjoy what everyone puts in for the mini-challenge!
Scubacarrot Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 I had an idea, with 3 panels of 32x32, slightly changed each time, would that be acceptable?
Maxim I Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 As I see we are doing some Mythic scene's, we should probably make a story about it. Or we can make a topic about it where we can link posts to the story. (There is a history made by me and Ska I think somewhile ago)

Hopefully now it is a bit more cohesive and has clearer transitions for the eye to follow. Anyway, here are the original and the revised versions side by side: I like it a lot! Good revisions. It does look more cohesive and the penultimate floor stands out better now. Reminds me that I still haven't taken photos of the cellar of my embassy. On vacation this week skiing in the northern Rakath Mtns, so I won't be able to post them until Sunday probably. I like the myth challenge. No ideas yet, but will work something up. A bit limited on bricks right now as almost everything is in the embassy and another free build I'm working on right now. But this kind of challenge shouldn't require a lot of bricks.
Scubacarrot Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Nevermind my previous question, I have a good idea for my myth, and the 16x16 is cool!
CptMugwash Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Hey guys, that mini myth challenge sounds like a great idea, I already have an idea that I was going to do from now till the next main challenge. I still need to dissasemble my embassy, half way there. Speaking of which, I know it's too late for the challenge but I did edit out the background to make it look better. MIkel That microscale is awesome, great job. Gabe Your revisited embassy is much better, it stands out alot more.
Basiliscus Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Mini challenges sound good! I'm not too good with myths, so I might give this one a miss, but I am going to try another free-build before the next competitive build! Good luck in the embassy scoring! I didn't enter but I will be cheering you all on! Woop woop!

Ska, you had some really interesting and thoughtful posts about the Historica metagame on the CC forum, did you share them with the guild leaders here? (runs off to myth bricks and weeps at the thought of dismantling the Abyssan embassy) I think a recent "myth" about a character could be acceptable, but I am not the judge! :) As for my posts over at CC, I have not brought the same thoughts over here yet - Although I know DC reads those forums, so if he wants to borrow from anything I have said, then he and the other leaders are welcome to it. I mean, I would be willing to make more suggestions, but I came to this relatively late in the game and would not want to step on anybody's toes. Also, changing the rules drastically would alter the experience at this point in the game. Say in a year or 6 months, if they wanted to "reboot" Historica with a more defined "game like" version, I think it could work... I would be on board for helping to hash out game mechanics for sure. But, what we have now is a good system. I think the guild leaders are doing a good job making tweaks as we go. Also, we have a lot of secondary people that are taking the time to organize indexes, make maps, help run the lore, and run side contests. I hope this keeps the stress levels down for our GLs. I just feel like this is a really great community, and I am happy to be a part of it. One of the reasons I volunteered to run a pirate equivalent was to get some of those ideas into a group project. Although I don't think that it is going to take off over in the pirate forum. At least any time soon that is. I kind of have an eclectic background, although I am currently finishing a PhD (and hopefully finding a full time teaching gig), over the years I ran a small game developing company and tried my hand at fantasy writing... so something like this was right up my alley. I just end up thinking about stuff like the duchy post I made over at CC on my long drives to where I teach at. I probably have too much alone driving time... ha. As for the myth contest, I have one or two ideas up my sleeve. I have another really interesting idea for a group build /contest too that I think, based on our guild's tastes and characters thus far, a lot of people would be interested in. But I won't throw it down just yet because I don't want another guild to take the idea and run with it. So after the myth competition is over, I will detail it out more.
Si-MOCs Posted February 23, 2012 Author Posted February 23, 2012 Kaliphlin Story Time: Myths, Legends and Lore mini Challenge. Size restrictions: 32x32 or 5x 16x16 comic strip - (though I'm not going to measure). Go forth and build a story, or a snapshot of your story*. It maybe be about some long lost myth of the creation of Petrea. Or a Legend of your SigFig's rise to power. Or about the Lore of Kaliphlin guild. It can be from eons ago, or just last week's Tavern crawl. *must actually write a 50 words or more story. Judges: Kaliphlin guild - via poll (I'll create a separate thread later) Open: to anyone, including foreign guilds. Though good luck convincing the judges Prizes: Undisclosed number of battlepacks from Dex's personal stash: Deadline - March 11th STOE (Some Time On Earth) -- There slight modification to expand the mini-contest- so it's a bit easier for everyone to give it a go. If you're still having problems thinking of ideas, I, or someone else can write a story for you -- SkaForHire Thanks for the kind words, but I implore you to bring forth your ideas (and anyone else for that matter). There is no 'first in' mentality. Sure you weren't here from the start, but that doesn't mean your opinion isn't as valid as the next person. We are constantly looking to improve and run everything smoother. Feel free to at any time PM me or any of the GL or post ideas here or the general topic. We got some of the feedback we got last round - and we've tried to implement some of those changes. Haha I write/come up with lots of story ideas on my way to work too. You should see the pile of my ideas that we didn't use

Mike S Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 (edited) Thanks everyone for the compliments on the microscale version of my castle. In the early 90's I encountered the problem that I am sure all of you have encountered as well... the great problem of not having enough bricks. So I came up with a system similar to LEGO's current microfig games using 1x1 tubular bricks as "minifigs". I abandoned the system and LEGO shortly thereafter going into my "darkage" as I was not satisfied with LEGO's limited brick variety. (either I was far ahead of LEGO or my imagination station had ceased to work) EDIT: As I have not contributed any finished MOC to the guild yet, I wanted to let you all know that I am currently revising my watchtower to be added as a free build and also am thinking of plans for an Avalonian embassy as well. (it will be the abbey in my Mikel's history) Watchtower is for sure and should be complete soon but not sure if I have enough bricks to make the embassy I want to. Is LDD acceptable for a free build? gabe- yes I can't wait for those 1x1 round tiles. LEGO should have introduced those a long time ago. In fact it is LEGO's mold expansion that brought me back into LEGO. Also a note on your embassy... when I saw the first version of your embassy, I thought the first floor was brilliant but as you said something was not quite right with the second floor (still can't pinpoint if it was the colors or the shape that was wrong). Anyway your remodeling did the trick and I dare say that I don't think you could do anything more to it to make it more perfect. Si-mocs- I had a question about these challenges that I am sure was asked before. Is LDD acceptable submissions? I don't plan on using it in the myth challenge but in the future I might need to use LDD instead for time reasons (and maybe financial). I have a habit of coming up with more ideas than my current brick horde can build, so I think of each LDD design I do as "blueprints" for models I will build in the future after current projects are complete. As it is that when I build something that I am completely satisfied with, I am quite hesitant at tearing it apart to build something else... hence I expect my brick collection to fluctuate quite a bit between purchases and completed projects and with the current Lion's Bluff/Borqa project I forcast a great decrease of free bricks in my collection. Also is the myth chalenge limited to one entry per person? (I'll sneak this in- I uploaded a few of my Si-fi projects to my Flickr account) Edited February 23, 2012 by Mikel Kalores

NiceMarmot Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 Is LDD acceptable for a free build? ... Is LDD acceptable submissions? I don't know. My opinion would be that LDD is fine for free builds (and welcomed). But less accepted for challenges. I don't think LDD has been accepted for the overall Historica round 1 or 2 challenges (I haven't seen any LDD entries). We haven't really had any Kaliphlin-only mini-challenges yet, so I don't know what the rules for them are. If I was in charge, I'd probably say that LDD entries are OK, but will not be rated quite as high as an identical brick build would. Having just recently completed my first major LDD design, followed by its brick build, I realize that an enormous effort goes into an LDD design. It's not easy. And the advantage of LDD is that lack of bricks is not a disadvantage. So I wouldn't want to shortchange it (much). But brick-building is a bit different. And I admire people that do very creative things with their limited brick inventory.
robuko Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 I am reasonably certain that the LDD question was asked and anwswered in the Q&A thread, but I can't find it. As I recall, LDD submissions will not be valid for the challenges. I am not sure about free builds, but I hope they will be accepted because yours is ace, Mikel!

Christoph Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 (edited) (runs off to myth bricks and weeps at the thought of dismantling the Abyssan embassy) A bit limited on bricks right now as almost everything is in the embassy and another free build I'm working on right now. I still need to dissasemble my embassy, half way there. My dear guild fellows, your problems are known to me and to other great poets as well! Be aware of the metaphysical dimension of Lego building! "Du siehst, wohin du siehst, nur Eitelkeit auf Erden. Was dieser heute baut, reißt jener morgen ein;" (Andreas Gryphius, 1637) in rough translation: You see, wherever you watch out, on earth vanity only. What someone builds today, the other one tears down tomorrow. Yours, Abu Ali PS: Great mini challenge. I have been thinking about mythology all day... edit: I'm not sure if I can make it though, I can only build on weekends and this weekend I will be away. Let's see, maybe another late entry... Edited February 23, 2012 by Christoph
kabel Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 woho, Gryphius, that's quite a tough one to be cited here Personally, I'm seeing it more like the Bhudist monks who work on their sand mandalas for weeks and then take a broom to wipe them away ...
