SkaForHire Posted February 1, 2013 Posted February 1, 2013 Wow. Looks great! Can't wait to see the topic for it. Nice army marching out there! Yeah, it was actually you who put the one baseplate limit on it!!! :) Anyway, this will at least give us some free build points I think! Nice work.
NiceMarmot Posted February 1, 2013 Posted February 1, 2013 Anyway, this will at least give us some free build points I think! Nice work. Yes, unless I use it for one of my Challenge 6 builds. Not sure yet about that; will have to see if I am able to come up with another three good builds.
soccerkid6 Posted February 1, 2013 Posted February 1, 2013 @NM: Depending on the time you have I'd say use this It looks quite impressive and there is only 2 more months to get three builds done if you didn't use this. Either way I'm looking forward to seeing some good pics
Kai NRG Posted February 1, 2013 Posted February 1, 2013 NM, it looks great so far! I'm not sure I'd leave the top of the tower down so completely it might be better if you propped it up with some brown poles to indicate a temporary boost? It's certainly well done enough to use it for a Challenge VI build, though of course it's up to you, it might not be a bad idea if you wanted to keep the next two pretty big.
Mike S Posted February 1, 2013 Posted February 1, 2013 Yes, unless I use it for one of my Challenge 6 builds. Not sure yet about that; will have to see if I am able to come up with another three good builds. Looking good! If you use it for the challenge then you would have to cut it down quite a bit. Max size limit is 48x48 I believe.
NiceMarmot Posted February 1, 2013 Posted February 1, 2013 Looking good! If you use it for the challenge then you would have to cut it down quite a bit. Max size limit is 48x48 I believe. Good point. Forgot about that limitation. Bummer. What's the point of the size limit anyway? Especially with three builds -- we should have a size limit on two builds, and leave one build unlimited. Maybe I'll also do a version that fits... NM, it looks great so far! I'm not sure I'd leave the top of the tower down so completely it might be better if you propped it up with some brown poles to indicate a temporary boost? Good idea. I'll try that out and see how it looks.
Mike S Posted February 1, 2013 Posted February 1, 2013 What's the point of the size limit anyway? The size limit is for people like me that don't know how to set size limitations on themselves and build huge MOCs that would never make the time deadline. Personally I would have been happy if they had limited the size to a max of 16x16. I just can't seem to get in the groove for this challenge... I keep thinking up different scenerios. Right now I'm on one where Victor Revolword becomes the evil Emperor of Historica and the guilds become individual rebel clans operating on individual agendas.
NiceMarmot Posted February 1, 2013 Posted February 1, 2013 I just can't seem to get in the groove for this challenge... I keep thinking up different scenerios. Right now I'm on one where Victor Revolword becomes the evil Emperor of Historica and the guilds become individual rebel clans operating on individual agendas. I've finally (in the last few days) put together a story, but I haven't figured out the builds for it. I tried doing it the other way around -- coming up with cool build designs and then creating a story to fit. But I just couldn't get motivated to figure out designs with coming up with the story first. Of course, now I'm facing with taking a good story (IMHO) and trying to figure out if there are any really cool builds that fit it.
SkaForHire Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 I am interested in seeing how many people make Victor come out on top. My own story has been developing over the last few days. I have always known what the interior was going to be... but had no idea what the rest of the story is hahaha. I don't know what to build for the next to builds either... And I have been building the battlefield for Queenscross for one giant battle... but it is way too big to be part of the challenge. It has just been a story mover for me. Also, I have posted my "leaving home" build. DSC_1944 by skaforhire, on Flickr
Niku Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 OMG NiceMarmot you have a fantastic moc right there.
Mike S Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 Ok so I finally think I might have come up with a story that sort of makes sense of the Revolword saga to conclude Historica's first chapter... What do you all think of it? The army of the Four Guilds began the assault on Cedrica castle now held by Victor Revolword. But alas fortune did not shine on them. The walls of Cedrica castle could not be breached. What remained of the army of the Four Guilds returned to their homes in defeat. (MOC: Assault on Cedrica) Victor reveled in his victory, proclaiming himself Emperor of Historica and sent word throughout all of Historica; whoever surrendered and accepted Victor as their Emperor, would be spared as well as being allowed to keep their lands. Many in Historica accepted Emperor Victor’s offer and began turning on each other, accusing each other of treachery against Emperor Victor, some for personal gain and others in fear of the wrath of their new rulers. But hope for Historica was not entirely lost. King Darconius still lived. He had been away from Cedrica when Victor had taken the city. It was the King’s double that had been to the theatre that fateful day and it was he, not the king that still languished in the dungeons of Cedrica. (MOC: King’s double in the dungeons)[indoor] But a heavy weight of guilt lay upon the king for he felt he was the cause for Historica’s fall. If he had not sought the legendary crystals, Historica would still be in peace. He was determined to bring peace to Historica once and for all, so with his most trusted liegemen, he made his way to Varlyrio to continue the resistance. Little did he know that all that had happened was part of the ancient druids’ plan, and that Victor’s power had awakened an ancient people- the ones who had given the druids their knowledge. So it was that once again a forgotten land was revealed. (MOC: Gates of Aden)
Maxim I Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 @MoK: very interesting story! So if I am right, you will end chapter VI with an open ending, war between the members of the Guilds and a new power? @Masked Builder: I was looking for information, so I went to your first post and saw this: 1321908272'[/b] post='1125194'] Our Watchtower is almost complete sir. Your slaves were Avalonian right? @All: My story will consist of 3 mini-stories 1. A few thiefs will have to sneak in, in order to steal the helmet. This whole story will be a tribute of honour to a legendary movie 2. An I.A.M.S. member has the task to kill Victor Revolword in his tower 3. Lord Damaximus will besiege Cedrica with the help of some allies of him (Kaliphlin, Nocturnus, Avalonia, Mitgardia, Amenor, Atlarka, Drakrydar & Ximus (and probably Varlyrio as well, will depend what the plans are of MikeyB) The only problem I got so far is that I will have 2 or maybe even 3 interiors and only one exterior (about the last one). Yup indeed again with 4 eastern Guilds who aren't part of Historica (but are part of the Eilandica-continent). As some people may have noticed, I have put this note near my name in the GoH Character Location & Facts: "Keeper of the Alliance between Ximus, Amenor & Atlarka". That title gives me unlimited militaric and diplomatic powers in those Guilds, but no political and financial powers (as they are still independent Guilds). As I still see king Darconius responsible for all the losses we have, I think it is not more than normal that he has to take off his crown. Sadly enough, thanks to Victor's magic tricks and our siege of the capital, Cedrica has become one big ruined & razed city. So that means we will need to have a new (& powerfull) king & capital. Thanks to the diplomatic struggles between our 4 Guilds, no one will give someone from another Guild all the power. So there will 4 free Guilds again. Problem is, if there is nothing that unites them in one way or another, war will break out the moment someone winks... So my solution: Emperor Damaximus of the 8 Free Guilds Imperial Capital: Mpya Stedor (which lays relatively in the middle of the 8 Guilds) But, as I say: 8 free guilds, so I will have no political power at all! I will only have the power to defend the peace between every guild It is kinda based on the Holy Roman Empire, which had an emperor, but every state of the HRE had it's own king
gedren_y Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 Nice ideas guys. . . I would align my story with Damaximus' up till the battle of Cedrica. Post battle, we'll see who's ending becomes cannon. I'm planning my last scene to be my characters get to the ruined deserted Cedrica late, and find the body of Victor Revolword. They make sure he stays dead. I'm planning several small builds as part of my story along with the principal builds. Maybe some microscale. My new Lego order came in today, and I'm quite happy to announce that LoC parts will feature in my Challenge VI story. I only need one more LoC set and I will have my Armored Eagle Goddess and all her retinue. The giant egg she is supposed to be reborn in may take some time though, since the Duplo egg I want is kind of rare.
Kai NRG Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 I just finished another section of my journey of exploration: I've got one more left before I can tie into the Kaliphlin mini-challenge, but I probably won't write it until Monday. Anyway, MK, sounds great! I wonder how many people will leave the story hanging and how many will have a sort of happily forever after ending... DM, I wouldn't worry about too many interiors. You could do all three interiors if you felt like it! And I'm looking forward to seeing your armored eagle goddess, gedren!
NiceMarmot Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 (edited) DaMaximus, how come I'm not surprised that your story has your character ending up as Emperor and Mpya Stedor as the capital? My story (currently) has a somewhat bittersweet ending. Things work out OK re Revolword, but from there things are unsettled. ("Hard to see, the future is" ) The story is probably fairly standard in its overall sweep, but a bit unusual and interesting in the details. BTW, I went on BrickLink last night to order a few of those SW Bespin planet domes, and got a bit carried away. Ending up buying $178 worth of stuff (it was a good night for Plastic Bricks Direct, one of my favorite stores). BrickLink is so addictive! 2xBTW, if anyone's interested, I have a Greasemonkey script that puts a catalog and price guide link next to every item in stores in BrickLink, so you can easily click through and see the price guide for an item. Let me know if you want it. Edited February 2, 2013 by NiceMarmot
Kayne Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 Yes, I totally want that script! PBD is my favorite Bricklink store as well. It seems that they always have what I want at a good price and in large quantities!
Maxim I Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 @NM: that script looks very usefull! :) I don't know why you are not surprised Even it is not really an open ending in my story, I think I can make some nice challenges out of my story for example: - Attack on Amenor (where members of all the 4 guilds can make a ship with an army they send to Amenor to help them against agressors => Some nice prices for the winner) - Embassy in the 4 Eastern guilds (or maybe 5 when you add Varlyrio too). In my eyes, the embassy challenge was one of the best challenges - Mpya Stedor Outer City: as it is the Imperial Capital, people from all Guilds are coming to work and live here. => 2 different challenges: (1: make a house for a character representing your own Guild) + (2: make a house for a character representing one of the 4 non Historica-Guilds or Varlyrion) - Rebellion of ??? (probably some Avalonian members) . After 4 months, tensions are to high and some Historica-members will probably revolt. You can join the rebellion or join the defenders of the Empire. With some fun game-rules, we will play a nice MOC based game (still have to work this completely out) so we can determine if I will stay Emperor or not
NiceMarmot Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 (edited) I posted the script here. It's pretty basic; it just adds two links for each item in a store -- one for the catalog entry and one for the price-guide for that item. Sorry, I probably won't be able to provide much tech support for this one, so you all are mostly on your own. It works in Firefox + Greasemonkey. Make sure it applies to pages that match http://www.bricklink.com/storeDetail.asp*. It might be adaptable to work in Google Chrome; I haven't looked into that yet. I've been meaning to expand it a bit, but haven't gotten around to it. I'd like to put another link / hotspot in, where if you hover over it, it pulls in the price-guide page via ajax, parses out a few numbers (perhaps quantity avg past sale price, quantity avg current price), and displays them in a little javascript popover div. Someday... Edited February 3, 2013 by NiceMarmot
Mike S Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 @MoK: very interesting story! So if I am right, you will end chapter VI with an open ending, war between the members of the Guilds and a new power? Yes, I wanted to leave more options open to each individual GoH member. A story always needs some form of conflict and although Victor is not my favorite villain, I think that it would strengthen the current plot if he actually was invincible from any guild member. If he gets killed off now, it really makes everyone seem kind of foolish, especially the King and the guild leaders for letting him capture Cedrica so easily. (The king and the guild leaders can keep all of historica in check but not Victor, surely means that Historica needs an artifact or being as powerful as the helm and as smart as Victor, he did trick the king and the guild leaders so he evidently is brilliant as well as powerful) And since a villain is always needed, why not keep him around? Also the King must redeem himself as he is called Darconius the Unyielding otherwise he would have been known in the history of Historica as Darconius the Useless. As for war, I don't think there would be any open war, more like little skirmishes. I tried to set the story up so Guild members could choose to join Victor, King Darconius, or remain neutral. And the guilds would begin to shift from territorial entities to professional entities. The new power (the first elves) as well as Darconius and Victor would be controlled by the GoH moderators. The new power would be more of a neutral force seeking only to maintain a certain ballance in Historica against the evil of Victor.
NiceMarmot Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 BTW -- my son's birthday party is Sunday. It's a LEGO themed party -- there's a bunch of guys around here that will put on LEGO parties for kids and bring in a ton of bricks and do building activities with the kids and so on. I think he will get a few LEGO sets from his classmates and friends. Here's hoping he gets some cool Chima or new Ninjago sets! In any case, it will be a fun day, and even better when the 49ers win the Super Bowl later on in the day!
SkaForHire Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 Tell the little guy happy birthday from Kaliphlin!!!! Also, I hope they stomp the Ravens, can't stand those guys. As for stories, all of you have some really interesting stories, even the aggrandizing DaMaximus!!!! I kind of agree that Historica needs a prime evil, but also that the king would be too weak if he was killed off so quickly. I just know the first act of my story, and not the end. Basically Victor frees some of his scum lackeys that we caught almost a year ago (he needs his loyal generals back).
NiceMarmot Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 BTW -- Brickforge has their turbans on sale: Lots of different colors. Only $0.10 to $0.25 each. Great deal for Kaliphlin! Although getting to the $10 minimum order at these prices is a bit hard.
Brickington Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 Also, I hope they stomp the Ravens, can't stand those guys. More like the other way around, the 49ers are dead meat!
gedren_y Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 NM, I hope you and your son have a great day. As to the Super Bowl, I have no interest in American Football (and I'm American), so I don't care who wins. In the Nestlands we prefer other sporting events. Those Brickforge Turbans also go with the Arabian Helmet, which is going for $0.75. Use the little round tops as mushrooms or finger bowls. The color you showed is now out of stock.
NiceMarmot Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 (edited) OK, here's the haul from my son's birthday party: Ninjago Warrior Bike, Batman figure 4526, City Patrol Car, Ninjago Jay's Storm Fighter, LOTR Shelob Attacks, Ninjago Kai's Blade Cycle, City Police Helicopter, City Brickmaster book, Chima Crawley's Claw Ripper, Chima Waterfall Speedorz, and Chima Target Practice Speedorz. That's not too bad. We already have the Blade Cycle and Shelob Attacks, but both sets have pretty good parts, and we could always use more giant spiders. My son has wanted the Storm Fighter for a while, so he's psyched for that. Glad to get the Chima sets, as we don't have any of them yet and they look fairly cool and have great figs. Of course, I won't be able to use any of these parts in MOCs until my son gets tired of them, probably in three or four months. As for the Super Bowl, what a wild game! The 49ers almost pulled it out, but that's what happens when your defence doesn't show up for the first half of the game. I grew up outside of Baltimore (before the Ravens were there) so I'm a bit of Ravens fan too, so I'm not totally unhappy -- it was a win for me either way. And while I'm blabbing about random, non-GoH stuff, let me vent about BrickLink sellers with restrictive lot limits (not PBD -- they're fine). If you're going to have a lot limit like $1 per lot, and half your store consists of items with only one or two quantity of a $0.10 piece, how do you ever expect to sell through those last few units of each item? Unless a customer really loads up on other items and goes way over $1/lot, they're never going to buy those items with small quantities, because then they'll hit the lot limit. This especially applies to pieces that customers are unlikely to buy in large quantities, parts that no one really needs 100 or 20 of. EoRant Was hoping to photograph and post my MOC today, but it's very gloomy and drizzly today. Will try to see if I can get enough light inside to photograph it, but might have to wait until the weather improves. Edited February 4, 2013 by NiceMarmot
