I am sorting my bricks something like this:

- plates : divided in 3 groups: tan + brown | dark tan | others

- minifigs

- accessoires, nicely divided considering their function. (a small box for crates, one for weapons, armour, ...)

- bricks : if I got more than 100 of a certain brick, it got it's own box, otherwise it is divided by colour

I am not sure about the quantity of my bricks. I think around 25K I really have (more than 10K of them are small 1x1 round plates). But most of them are in my city, so let's say I got between 5000 and 10000 bricks to make MOC's :classic:

I guess I should mention that I do sort mine in a hybrid of what many of you do. Bulk by color in stero-lite shoebox size bins, with a few smaller baggies. I used to use tool drawers with my old collection, but did not have them here with me. Recently I bought three to use, and have been slowly sorting smaller parts into them. Although... I love that tackle-box idea, and may have to at least move my MFs to those. We have two large shelving units we store all of these one, and my fiance is in the works to create a canvas tent looking cover for it so that it fits into the game rooms ultimate theme = 1930s safari adventurers room. So, the whole storage area is going to look like a large tent coming out of the wall, so when you open the flap all of the Lego will be inside.

I have over 90,000 bricks according to brickset.com, but those are just from sets. That doesn't take into account all of the loose bricks I've purchased. But I like to keep them in a giant tote so I can go swimming like Scrooge McDuck...

We at Kaliphlin are boycotting our leaders absence... so no more Kaliphlin colors until he returns...

 Tell that to Si-MOCs, he ran an entire Sci-Fi month...

I have a small break now... then I have to do something else for an entire month :cry_sad:

I'm sorry guys - worst leader EVER.

As for LEGO collection...

This is 2/3 of my build area:

Possibilities abound... by Si-MOCs, on Flickr

For most of my brick, they are in baggies / clear shoeboxes(I think I'm up to 100!). My brick is in several stages of sorting:

By Colours: Bleys (always sorted down to piece), other colours are down to types of pieces

By Piece type: different colour of the same piece in the same baggie

Already Presort: broken down to basic brick types - 2x plate, 1x plate, bricks, wedges, greebles etc etc

Unsorted tablescrapes: left over stuff I'm too lazy to sort out

Unsorted brick - includes sets.

Most of the sorted pieces are grouped into larger tal bins in the same presort categories.

No idea how much I have, but I would wager it's easily 250k+ at this point.

Better watch out... something might happen to Dextrus Flagg in the next challenge if you're away too long...

That's fine. Fextrus Dlagg shall rise up in his place!

He's exactly like Dextrus, but BACKWARDS!

I forgot to say I'm allowed to be worst guild leader EVER.

Cause I have the BEST guild EVER :look:

Now that was an impressive workspace with a view!

Way to cover your butt! Well, I guess stating the obvious is not CYA. No, you did a tremendous job over in the Sci-fi forum, and I wish I could have found time to participate.

Up until last week I had been using cardboard trays which are now very flimsy from the way I've stacked them while building. I realized my orginization efforts were actually creating a greater mess so I bought 36 8x15 stacking storage bins to add to my 4- 6 bin storage units. I have tried all sorts of methods of sorting/storage from a king size white sheet which i tie the ends up and stick in large bin to mini sorting trays like the tackle boxes, With my new storage bins, I'm sorting by piece shape but I also keep similar shades seperate (old and new gray). Bricks are sorted like this: all 1x1s and 1x2s in one bin, all 1x3s and 1x6s in one bin, all 1x4s and 1x8s in one bin, any brick longer than 1x8 in another bin, 2x2s, 2x3s, and 2x4s in another bin. Any brick longer than 2x4 in another bin. 1x1 round plates mixed with contrasting colors: dark bley, orange, lime green, purple, light tan, and redish brown in one bin, etc.

Very cool to see pictures and read about how everyone sorts, plus to see how big and small collections are. To see that some of you have 'small' collections(like 10,000 is small!) but compare that to the cool builds that you have produced is fun. I have about 30,000 bricks which my wife says is plenty. I disagree, but I think the fact that my bins are in our bedroom hurts my cause! I use the sterilite 3-5 drawer bins stacked on each other and I have 6 of them. In there I have bricks sorted by color, except for Black, Light Bley and Dark Bley which I have sorted by slopes, plates 4x4 and larger, plates smaller than that, and bricks and each of those by color. Then I have 2 30 drawer units that are designed for nails/screw, etc that I use for smaller parts such as tiles, 1x1 rounds, greeble type pieces, etc and sorted by color there. So far it works great for me and I do still have room to grow the collection a bit before I need more containers.

Some pics of my collection:

my desk, green, bley, landscaping parts, GoH figs, special black parts (the big stack from top to bottom)

minifigure box, minifigure accessories box.

Don't mind the t-shirt on the build, its just keeping some dust off and concealing the build

Better pic of the bins, also shows my "light box", what I call my little box of small parts and another box of special black parts:

tubs of black and red:

Boxes of white/yellow, dark bley, blue, clear, snowscape pieces, tan, minifigs other than castle, and brown.

Other than the stack of boxes next to the desk the bins are in different places around my room :classic:

Great work! You and Massa were totally up to the challenge!

I think I will have my first build up soon... I am building the bridge at Queenscross for the battle, but I am going to "enter it" as its own build I think, as we only have 40 days left.

Up in the Mitgardian Sierras doing some snowboarding with the family, so I won't be posting much for a few days. Seems a bit quiet in this thread anyway. Hope that means everyone is too busy building!

 Have fun, knowing Revolword he won't bother the snow...

It does seem awfully quiet... we seem to become active in fits and starts...

I have been busy building though, probably about halfway done with my third Challenge VI now! :sweet: (Haven't done the second yet to be sure...)

I am starting Challenge 6 now. With 75 points on the table for each entry, the key thing is to get as many entries as we can. I won't have a great deal of building time, but I'll try to get all 3 done.

Agreed. I am pretty sure I can get an entry in... but as the battle of Queenscross gets larger and large and is technically a series of free builds (also it need to happen in the story before my challenge entries!) I am getting worried haha.

I'm totally in for Challenge 6, just need more time! I have one build done, one 50% done and one about 10% done. Story is at about 30% complete on paper, but done in my head if that counts! I can't wait to see what we turn out as a guild, so we can get back to #1

I've finished both my first and last Challenge VI builds, but I think I might actually use the first one as a prelude and build another one... Actually I'm not at all worried about time, it only takes me about three days to build a 50x34, which is the size I've been going for (though I plan on making the middle one - since it will have to be an interior - a bit more irregular).

Great to hear that we've got four at least, probably five or six! Lets leave those mitgardians back where they belong!

Time shouldn't be an issue for me either, because I do build fairly quickly. But, I work a 60 hour job with 10 hours of commute and I have 4 kids, with most of them in sports(the 3 year old is still not in one!) That eats up a bunch of my time. I am working on a solution for sleep, I figure if I can eliminate the need to sleep I will be good to go!

Starting building is something for next week :(

I am in the week at another place then my bricks, so I only got time for it in the weekends :(

Posted

@DM, I do hope you can do something for Challenge VI though! By the looks of it, we should have a fair amount of entries... I sure hope nothing gets in the way of our building plans!

@SK: Yes, she is much better, thank you! Still has some pain as her neck heals, but no more loss of motion or feeling in any limbs. Her mood is also much improved, obviously since she is feeling better.

This news is great! I am very happy for your family Kayne!

EDIT: on another note, remember when we were talking about bricklink orders and counting last week? Well it turns out that my second bricklink order (not from the seller I was talking about earlier, he was great!) accidentally sent me exactly 1/2 of the order that I bought! as in I ordered 200 of each piece and only got 100! Luckily I counted that time... haha.

Wow, I thought I had time pressures. At least I've only got two kids. I thought I'd have more building time since I got laid off, and that did happen at first, but now I'm helping my wife with her business for a bit, so not as much free time as I had hoped. Plus my father is visiting this week, so he and I are hanging out and doing stuff. So my status is: all three builds 0% complete, build ideas done, story outline done, but actual story writing 0% complete! It will be a busy March...

That's quite a discrepancy! I think you would have noticed even if you hadn't counted (if the quantity really was 100).
