soccerkid6 Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 Anyone else who thinks flickr has become unusable today? Ridiculously slow and half the time just doesn't want to load pages for me... It definitely got slower, hopefully it is only a temporary effect of the update...
Kayne Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 I was at work all day, but I updated my Android app while there and when I loaded it was slow. I thought it was just the app that was slower, but I'll try the site now that I'm home
gedren_y Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 Yesterday I tried to use a link to Flickr and got a "page cannot be displayed" screen. I had to re-click the link twice before it would work. It may have been because I was on Brothers Brick and the link may have existed before the Flickr change.
SkaForHire Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 Yes, Flickr is very weird now, and slow. It took forever to get my uploads to show up today. Not a good start to the new Flickr... I also got an email today offering me to go back to the free version from pro. But it never said what the benefits of staying with pro were! ...... The reason I was uploading today is because I made it back to my mom's house and took a few pictures. Today I went into the basement to look at my original collection, and this is what I found: Collection by skaforhire, on Flickr I guess my nieces have been busy.... Also, my mom and sister packed up all my ships in plastic wrap, a picture of part of the old navy inprisoned in wrap: Collection by skaforhire, on Flickr I am contemplating cancelling my flight and renting a van to take my collection back to Texas with me... Rentals are so expensive though...
Mike S Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 (edited) I am contemplating cancelling my flight and renting a van to take my collection back to Texas with me... Rentals are so expensive though... Wouldn't it be cheaper and easier to just have it shipped to you? And the drive... I just got back from a one way drive from PA to FL and although it wasn't as bad as I expected, (I had a backup driver) I don't look forward to that distance of a drive anytime soon. I used to drive Austin to Tampa straight by myself but those days are over for me. I think I would rather do the 23 hour trip to Hong Kong in coach the whole way than drive that distance anymore. Edited May 22, 2013 by Masa of Kaliphlin
SkaForHire Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 I know what you mean. When I dated someone in, and then lived in Orlando, I used to do PA / Orlando in 14 hour bouts all the time, but I was also 8 years younger... PA to Texas, not so doable. I thught I could do a Pod, but they don't service the area my mom lives in. Shipping through fed ex or the like isn't really an option because it is too large. There are many, many tubs. I think the I don't know of any other large self pack / they ship companies, but if anyone else has heard of one, I am all ears.
Mike S Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 There are many, many tubs. Ahh those are the key words there. You must have quite an enormous collection! And my wife thinks I have too big a collection. Haha I think I only have about 2 tubs total when its all mixed together.
SkaForHire Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 Yeah, it is big. And then I have the one back in Texas that took off when I joined GoH. Let's just say the way I coped with my dad's death as a kid was buy, buy, buy lego. I think my entire salary from my first two jobs went mostly to lego and girlfriends. Yeah serving Whoppers and cleaning machines for bricks! Even in my young adult and college years I kept purchasing, and sadly I didn't have a good excuse like GoH for acquiring new pieces, I just became slightly addicted to Ebay. Then I stopped having disposable income for a good five years, and that broke the habit, and I only bought a few sets a year. Then... I moved away to a tiny apartmnt in Orlando and had no room for my collection, and that is how I ended up with two collections. Wow... autobiography... sorry for the hijack!
kabel Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 awesome collection there ska, and I sure would love to go on a road trip through the us, always enjoyed that ... my longest was from seattle all the way down to la paz bcs! so fl to tx sounds like a piece of cake to me
Mattiusxavier Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 (edited) So...I worked out a deal with Da_Maximus...here is one of my characters for Kaliphlin. :) The other is a Military Commander and Cousin of the Julia. He will be one of the main characters I will be using. :) Julia Xavier (Formal Wear) by Mattiusxavier, on Flickr Back story: Without a sound in the darkness the High King of Rowia was slain...the mighty people of Loreos who had been utilizing the Areani legions for protection lay blamed for the tragedy and assassination. Although these accusations remained false, the mighty High Consul (Arturius Xavier) of the Morastian Republic (long time allies of Loreos) called together his generals, Pro-Consuls and people in a bid to not only fight for the republic and the alliance they uphold but to win lost lands that rightfully belonged to them. Seeing that he had the numbers and a just cause, the Consul still felt that it would be best to seek advice and council from some of his oldest friends across the sea who were foreign to this conflict and would offer fair advice, maybe even more troops to suppor the war effort. Thus the Consul sent out ships with envoys to meet with his old time friends...one such ship...the warship "The Defiant" sailed into the Harbour of Mpya Stedor in Kaliphlin a mere half of a fort night later during the darkness of the night with the messenger aboard who was to seek council from the old Lord of the City. Little to the knowledge of the messenger that times had changed since the Consul had been in the City last...his friend had been replaced by the much younger and handsomer Lord Damaximus the heir to the region. Hearing and reading the words from the messenger who remained garbed in a cloak shielding both their face and armour...Lord Damaximus agreed to sail forth from the port and meet with his father's friend on the isle of Ilia in the Morastian Republic. The offer of course was a peaceful one that would benefit both powers. As Lord Damaximus arrived at the island, he found a new City there under construction and the same messenger he had met at his court some time before. He questioned the messenger why the Consul was not present. The messenger removed her garb and revealed herself to be the eldest daughter of the Consul, the fair and commanding Julia Xavier who held the rank of General and Pro-Consul to the new City that was being established. She stated that her father was busy in the Western Forest with some of his armies leading a direct assault against Lenfald and talked more about their cause. After several tours of the new City and a robust adventure into the forest where Lord Damaximus saved the life of Julia from a wild boar...it was the start of a relationship that would last the ages. As part of the negotiations, Julia agreed on behalf of her father who later agreed in Morastius-Renu himself with Lord Damaximus that they would forge a healthy Alliance with both sharing military aid with each other. The armies of the republic would come to the aid of Lord Damaximus in times of war and the same would be done by Lord Damaximus for the people of the Republic. From that date forward Lord Damaximus would hold the title of Pro-Consul and Senator of the new City with his now betrothed Julia and be also an official member of the Republic with the marriage and alliance sealed both would share in the joy and turbulent times to come. SkaForHire Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 I am apparently ignoring my vacation... Team, Masa and I have been cooking up a building plot, similar to the rescuing Merith plotline that he and Kai went back and forth with a few months ago. (Does someone have the links for the new people?) We would like to know who all is interested in participating in this storyline during the summer. I am not giving away the story just yet, just trying to gauge interest. Here is the basic concept: There will be three intertwining plotlines that builders will participate in. We will start the beginning of the plotlines with a MOC, and pass a building challenge off to the next builder in line… They will build their part of the story, and at the end they would add a story element that would challenge the next builder in line while they build, this would continue until we hit a set story point, and then we may “redirect” the stories towards a finale. So in a sense you will be given missions to complete in this event. Right now, depending on the interest, I think we would look to turn out a new MOC for each of the storylines every week. (so if we had three people on each storyline, that would mean each person would have 3 weeks to complete their MOC in the rotation). I assume that each builder would probably build 3-4 builds for the storyline. We would probably need most of the people to sign up beforehand so that we knew who the story was going to next, but we might be able to squeeze in late builders. The storylines would all have a theme, two would be adventure based, one would be more political/warfare based. You would get to choose which plotline you were building for. There would be a few characters that would be prevalent in most of the builds, but also your sig fig or characters are welcomed to join the action in the builds themselves. More details on the storylines themselves as we get an idea of how many people want to participate. Why are we doing this? Because we are Kaliphlin, the story telling guild! Yes, some of the freebuilds will count before June, but many probably won’t count in the Book 1 competition period. Still, hopefully those after June will be counted elsewhere. Also, if I can get permission from the mods, I have prizes for participants. We could have an EB-wide vote for the best three builds of the whole series. Or maybe the best build of each storyline, and one overall winner. I have some older MISB sets that I can put up, or I can get some prizes from the new Castle line depending on what people like. So I ask you, are you interested? I am open to letting outher guilds participate, but probably one of the storylines would stay primarily Kaliphlin.
SSchmidt Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 (edited) A freebuild for Schmidt of Barqa. GoH - Kaliphlin Freebuild by SSchmidt--, on Flickr Edited May 22, 2013 by SSchmidt
Gideon Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 A freebuild for Schmidt of Barqa. Nice desert build, the tan/dark tan/reddish brown color palette works so great for Kaliphlin builds both great and small Reading the text to the pictures on flickr it looks like Schmidt is a cunning fella! I wouldn't be surprised if he has dealings with Emad al-Haboob in Barqa.
Kayne Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 Ska, I would be totally interested in this. How big do you think the builds would be?
Gideon Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 I would also be interested in joining in Ska, even if my building opportunities will be limited until August (and non-existent in July) I could try to make one or two smaller builds in June at least
Kai NRG Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 That certainly sounds interesting Ska! I'll probably have further comments when I get a chance to read it though a bit more slowly, but I do agree that something like this would be great as we are the story-telling guild! @Mattiusxavier, Welcome to Kaliphlin!
Maxim I Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 Yeeez, my presentation yesterday was a big succes !!! Finally time again for Lego now ! @Ska: sounds really interesting, but the participation of me will depend on how busy I will be with our storyline and with the one I am setting up with MattiusXavier! @Mattiusxavier: welcome to GoH!!! The start of something great between us is about to begin!
SkaForHire Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Sorry was gone for a few days in Canada with no internet access... Back at my mom's now, but still on vacation... @ Kayne, I don't think we would throw any type of limit on it. And if we only had about six or seven of us interested, we might just stick to one or two plotlines. @DM, one of the plotlines we had in mind was going to have something to do with the civil war in Eastgate.
Kai NRG Posted May 28, 2013 Posted May 28, 2013 Looks like Mitgardia is trying to take our comment spot... let's not let that happen! My latest free-build which I realized I hadn't posted here yet: @Ska, re-reading the idea it sounds promising, I'd certainly be interested in participating. And here are links for the three Merith episodes: One (Masa), Two (Kai), Three, (Masa).
Mike S Posted May 28, 2013 Posted May 28, 2013 (edited) Looks like Mitgardia is trying to take our comment spot... let's not let that happen! I really do wonder what Dextrus Flagg has been up to. Comment wise it really helps to have an active guild leader. As Ageven seems to be becoming a lot more available than Dextrus, Masa has been thinking we Kaliphlins should appoint him as the standin Delegate of Kaliphlin. Edited May 28, 2013 by Masa of Kaliphlin
SkaForHire Posted May 28, 2013 Posted May 28, 2013 There are enough active people in this guild that we could definitely have a vice-leader that would look after our interests. If Ageven, or just Kai in general, wants to take up that mantle, I would support it. I know we kind of run things as a collective in the guild (which I like), but not having an active insider leaves us oustide the loop.
Pyrovisionary Posted May 28, 2013 Posted May 28, 2013 *Snip* Hiya Matt! Glad to see you've come over from Flickr. It's Pyrovisionary, Bannerman of Draconia and stuff. If you guys didn't know, Matt runs the Flickr equivalent of Goh: Legends of Brickdom!
Maxim I Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 A strong vice-leader is indeed not a bad idea! @All: I hope I can borrow most of your sigfigs this week or next week I am not planning to bricklink new stuff, so I will see how many I can recreate
Kai NRG Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 I really do wonder what Dextrus Flagg has been up to. Comment wise it really helps to have an active guild leader. As Ageven seems to be becoming a lot more available than Dextrus, Masa has been thinking we Kaliphlins should appoint him as the standin Delegate of Kaliphlin. Dextrus (aka. Si) voted yes on the active/intent to be active poll. And I do know he's quite busy with Brickworld & probably with the Sci-Fi forum. I'm not sure how active he's planning on being in the future and having him as guild leader has been pretty cool. Of course you're suggesting a vice-leader, I would be honored to have the position, though after October I might not be so available for a month or so. I will do my best to stay available as much as possible regardless though! There are enough active people in this guild that we could definitely have a vice-leader that would look after our interests. If Ageven, or just Kai in general, wants to take up that mantle, I would support it. I know we kind of run things as a collective in the guild (which I like), but not having an active insider leaves us oustide the loop. Having a collective run things is pretty cool, probably the major handicap with that is that there's no specific person to run, say, title challenges (not that that seems to really help, in fact I wonder why having an active guild leader helps?). Also, I would point out that I am hardly an insider! (Which does seem like it might be part of our problem, we don't have any (active) insiders other than Si. And I'm sure that there are others who could do the job well, we could have a vice-leader election similar to Mitgardias, if desired. @DM, you're welcome to use my sig-fig! In fact I've changed a little (took off the "wig" and gave myself this hair in black, besides a slight clothes upgrade) so if that's easier for you go ahead and switch it!
