Captain BeerBeard Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 @ZC Great job of twisting my words, again. You don't get my point at all. I'm not in a funk. There's a reason I don't comment on your moc's. I won't post it here. I will make an effort to get along with you and forget the past but you have to be willing to do the same. There seem's to be some kind of communication barrier between us.
ZCerberus Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 There's a reason I don't comment on your moc's. Kind of like how you have a reason to not post on my MOCs, all I was saying is that maybe there are reasons others don't post anything about your MOCs and I think that may have something to do with your negative attitude. You can make a valid point without cursing or calling others stupid. I agreed with you that some of us may need to comment more on MOCs to help people get better, but I don't think we need to make threats or insult the guild to do it. I think doing that is what is makes people not want to be firendly with you or comment on your MOCs.

Can you and me put it behind us?
Doornroosje Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 Hi all! It has been a while since I posted something, but some other things have take up a lot of my time. I still made some time to look at the GoH forum to see some new MOCs, and I have seen some new great ones for Avalonia, but lacked the time and energy for commenting. However I hope I get my time and my building inspiration back soon. Have really been thinking about the 3rd challenge, and what I could build for it. It will really be a challenge for me! Before I can start buidling again however I will have to take some of my previous building down and sort out the parts (really not looking forward to that )
Derfel Cadarn Posted March 13, 2012 Author Posted March 13, 2012 I do understand many of the problems people face here. Time is a big factor. I would love to comment on every moc, but it takes an awful lot of time to closely look through every moc so I can give a good comment. I think time is a big factor for many here, as I myself am currently in a very busy period at work, and the only free time I have has gone on building. A lot of people are the same. Most of us have come down to just commenting on our guilds mocs, but even this can be time consuming, especially in this guild where there is large amount of great mocs posted. Some members here do have quite a bit of free time and so they are the ones who regularly comment on many mocs. It's not that we don't like your mocs Mr Beard, infact I do rate you as a great builder who is improving with every build. If I have the time I will always comment. But like Z has said, you are a very outspoken guy and some members can get put off by that. When the Guilds were first set up, it was Mitgardia that had most people worried as they had a great selection of builders. Avalonia had many builders that I didn't know and were new, but as it turned out they have turned into a great bunch of builders who have produced some seriously good stuff. When a challenge comes up I know that this guild has plenty of members who are more than a match for the bet of the other guilds. Some people may have mentioned that My builds have helped out are guild a lot, but that's not the case. I built a entry for the Embassy challenge, but it was left out of the judging and wasn't entered. So you guys don't need my help, you one that round yourselves with a bunch of great entry's. So you guys rock hard! I know there is always improvement to be had in the guilds. When we set this up, we wereso eager to get it up and running that we didn't think in advance over a few things. So naturally, things are getting sorted and more efficient as we go along. I know some of you are not happy with the judging. Its four people with different opinions and different things they look for. It works, but I have often thought about public voting. The problem is, every moc from every guild has to be scored. So doing a public vote is difficult, as how can we depend on every member voting? Plus what about the mocs that arn't voted for? How would they be scored then? So a panel of four judges is the best idea as we all put the time in to score every single moc. However, I understand you guys all want and need to know what's what with how we score your builds. I will publish all your embassy scores tomorrow, and when challenge 3 is over, I will publish those. You can then all see how you scored in each department so you know where you need to improve. In the mean time, there's plenty of time to build for the latest challenge and there's a great prize up for grabs. I'd be very pleased if one of you guys takes that prize!! Everyone here has been improving with every build, look at the index and see for yourselves. We can all work together on making this guild run better, so keep posting your ideas. There's lots we can do to make our guild stand out. A really great fantasy style Avalonia banner would be good, something I can put at the top of the front page and use for a flickr group.
ZCerberus Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 Can you and me put it behind us? Yes, yes. I feel silly arguing with you in this fashion anyways. DC, I understand that maybe a public "vote" isn't practical for contest judging and I respect that each guild leader doesn't vote for their own guild. But if there is some creteria that is being used for judging, it would be nice to know what it is and how it will be weighed ahead of time. For example, is the most important aspect of challenge 3 the story, the overall MOC or the coolness of the guardian? If so how much affect do things like photo quality have on a MOC? Only relevant if two MOCs are nearly tied? Maybe there is no answer, but if there is, then we could have an idea of where to focus our time. Maybe more will be revealed soon, but I think that is something that may help us steer our attention. I like the idea of having a more focused flickr stream or something, that sounds like a great idea. I am no artist- do we have someone who could create a logo or banner- brickbuilt or otherwise for that?
Rogue Angel Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 I have a number of opinions to post on a number of topics here (I've always got opinions on everything though, ) GoH is something that I have to devote a decent amount of time to if I'm going to devote any time at all. For instance: I saw Beerbeard's post today, and had already been feeling bad that I haven't caught up with commenting on MOCs in almost 3 weeks, so I wanted to post a reply today. Well, that means I have to read through all the replies, then rewrite my reply a dozen times until it sounds right, and then add in responses to all the other things I have read in the process. So that means that reply ends up taking 30 min to an hour. Now, once I have that reply in place, it's usually pretty easy to then skim through all of the other Guild topics and catch up on what I've missed, since there are often somewhat relevant conversations going on there. BUT, that still means I have to spend a 30 min to an hour for that initial post. That may not seem like much, but personally, when my weekends are busy, then my weeknight time is usually pretty booked up too. Plus, if there are time sensitive builds (Mitgardian Prime Minister challenge, for example) I may end up spending my commenting time on that build instead, if I'm short on time. GoH tends to really go in cycles though. When I was waiting for the results on the 2nd Challenge, I was on here 3 or 4 times a day, and there was a bit of commenting, but then everything slowed down. I usually end up checking GoH on my phone, which takes forever to load, so if I haven't been seeing much going on recently, I won't check much. Also, I can't usually see the pictures on my phone, so it's useless to check new MOCs. SO, in conclusion to my first opinon, If I haven't caught up with GoH in the last 4 or 5 days, and I don't spend an hour after work to catch up, then it just keeps getting harder and harder to catch up. Without my last few weekends, I am getting way behind, and I haven't caught up yet. I definitely can see where Beerbeard is coming from in terms of posting on MOCs. It may be wrong, but most of my validation on MOCs comes from people posting. If 300 people have viewed my MOC but only 3 people posted, then I think it wasn't a very good build. I think that people are pretty good about posting overall, especially our core (7 was it?), and each guild has their core. I think that we're going to have a lull in comments when we have a lull in deadlines. (Mitgardians were posting all the time this week, because of their prime minister run, so they probably posted more on MOCs too, although this might have been somewhat political in nature too. Also, I like to try to post to every MOC that I am impressed with, just to show that I like it, and I am very hesitant to critique, because I don't want to post negatively, but that's something I have to work on as I suppose it is helpful. I do like the idea of posting the build scores, so people can see how they do, but I thing this is a catch 22 as well, because you end up having people say "my build was better than that one, how come it got a better score." Maybe you could say voting will take place during a certain week, so then GoH members know to vote during that time, and will have a whole week to vote, although I would prefer that you not be able to see the results, as I think that could influence voting significantly. Just a thought. I think I had more opinions to voice, but I've already spent an hour now, and I have places to be, people to see.
ZCerberus Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 heh- With all this to balance, I think overall the guilds leaders have done a good job. Not that we can't improve things, but, overall, very good.

Zach Mills Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 Dear Avalonia! I would like to be a member of your guild. I am active online and I love your color scheme and almost all of your builds. I will place quality over quantity for sure and since I don't have too many bricks yet I won't be able to build too many things right now. I surely will miss out on the current challenge. However I want to contribute some nice free builds. I would love to build a City in the Forest marked by the red circle: My goal and ambition is to build something huge like DC's Durnovaria or maydayartist's big landscape. It would be a village based around the wood industry with a Sawmill, Carpenter, etc. Best Regards, mephistopheles Good to have you here mephistopheles! Looking forward to your mocs! Your furniture are great and I may have to borrow some of the ideas! And about the land your claiming, I think no one has clamied it before you... Regarding the map of Avalonia, is there a new one? With all the countys in them? I have claimed the area where the water comes close to the forest. How big/where exactly are you going to build your village? I sort of have plans for the forest myself, so if it's possible, could you use the area below the road?
Legonardo Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 You could use this if you like it. >>image<< cool banner Captain! here's my banner, also free to use
Captain BeerBeard Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 cool banner Captain! here's my banner, also free to use Take mine, add the dragon and flags to it. Can you do that? Can you add fancey stuff in the corner's?

Looking forward to being good neighbors with you!
Zach Mills Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 Deal! I'll claim the forest part south of the road then. Looking forward to being good neighbors with you! It will be interesting. On the north of the road, there will live a wizard who believes the forest is a source of great magic, and on the south, a village who earn their living by cutting it down. I guess we will see how things go!

Zach Mills Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 No! No! No! I am not cutting it down. Have you ever played the Settler series on pc? I'll do sylviculture! For each tree I'll chop I'll plant 3 new :) Admittedly, I have not, would you explain them? I didn't find much on Google. Anyway, with that, I imagine we will be great neighbors! Actually, between the 2 of us, we make up the forest, so I feel confident that we can decide the content in it. I'm thinking the outer layer could be pine trees, and then towards the center, everything gets more ancient, with Alchemy ingredients becoming more common, something like this. And more towards my side I guess, we could include ruins? And with ruins of course, comes the sweet scent of treasure.

Totally the heart of the Mystic Isles! And, just a general announcement, but I am working on another update to the official map. This one is a major overhaul though, and will hopefully show everyone's specific territories. I've been trying to sift through the thread to find everyone's border claims, but if anyone would rather PM me to make sure, that would be much appreciated. Edited March 14, 2012 by Jason Cicchini

Getting a good design design down for trees is going to be hard, but I'll give it a go. if your updating the map, do you think you could extend the forest above Albion so that it meets the water at the water at the peninsula, and then as far down as where the lake comes closest to the forest, and then fill in the area up to the river? If that doesn't make sense, I could do a quick photoshop. I would really appreciate the edit.

I would like to ask for a small stream from the Forest south of the road running down toward one of the rivers. Just a small blue line :) @Zach Mills: great idea you had there with the forest. Just don't forget that a big road is going through the middle of the forest. Alchemy and mystic is supposedly not located next to a main road. Instead we could scatter these mystic places around the middle of each of our territories.

mephistopheles Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 Fellow Guild members! Let me introduce you Lieutenant Faustus, leader of the Avalonian forces in Woodward, my soon-to-be-on-the-map settlement. He is a striving young soldier who's bravery, loyalty and fighting skills are promising him a great career! Yours sincerely, Lord Mephisto of Woodward, Avalonia /this is not my sigfig yet. My sigfig will be Lord Mephisto. I need to buy some more minifig parts to complete him/
