mephistopheles Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 (edited) Dear guild members! I think I might have come up with a new tree technique. Before using it in other MOC's and posting it in a more public thread I want to have your opinion on this. I had used telescopes for tree building in an earlier MOC, but it disturbed me that when I looked into MOC from the side it didn't felt dense enough. Now I thought what if I turn the tree upside down (=the studs of the telescopes are looking down), then I can attach the stalks to the limb elements so that they hang down, too. Unfortunately I don't own any more stalks then these, but imagine a Forest built with this technique. This way you get the dense effect when looking into the MOC from the side (parallel to the baseplate). I am thinking of placing a huge stalk/scope/limb order now. I think this technique would look great by attaching multiple telescopes to the leaf in a way that makes the trunk branch out. Plus that would allow you to use the natural flexibilty of the branch pieces to make the tree bend in an organic way. Thank for sharing!....of course now I need to bricklink about 25 telescopes.
ZCerberus Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 Come to the yellow side, we have ale. Do you have flowers, lush trees, unicorns and rainbows too?
Jakon Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 Do you have flowers, lush trees, unicorns and rainbows too? No, but we have mountains, snow, axes, vikings, beer, and women.
Captain BeerBeard Posted March 30, 2012 Posted March 30, 2012 @ Mephistopheles I have plenty of those parts. I think your on to something with that idea. I'll post a pic later or tommorow with your idea. How big should I make it? Ten telescopes high? Or higher?

I think 8-10 scopes height is enough. The trees shouldn't all be the same size. Just please scatter these trees around on base plate and make a few picks form the side. Can't wait to see it. Meanwhile I visit Bricklink Edited March 30, 2012 by mephistopheles
Siercon and Coral Posted March 30, 2012 Posted March 30, 2012 No, but we have mountains, snow, axes, vikings, beer, and women. Humm we have Mountains, axes, wine, and women. Unfortunately we don't really get snow, and aren't partial to bearded women. So guess your on your own ;) But while your here stay a bit and have some of our famous BlakeBaery Wine :)
Zach Mills Posted March 30, 2012 Posted March 30, 2012 Please excuse the corner. I'll take a better picture tomorrow. Anyway, allow me to re-introduce Zach Sapphire, now sporting a healthy yellow tan that he got while sunbathing down in Kaliphlin. He is surrounded by other Avalonians.
Captain BeerBeard Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 @Zach Is your guy's cape black or dark green?
Zach Mills Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 @Zach Is your guy's cape black or dark green? Dark Green, although I probably won't use him with a cape very much.
Captain BeerBeard Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 @Mephistopheles I'll post the prototype design for that tree later. The telesope part is too weak for that tree style so don't go ordering a bunch of the telescope. I was able to come up with a better solution.
Rolli Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 (edited) Finally someone uses these hairs as blackberries. I had the idea some time ago but never had the chance to get my hands on a large enough amount of these! Great freebuild! I myself am still in the middle of sorting of my bricks and had the time to finish my contribution for the Hogwarts Community Build. If someone is interested and if I'm allowed to post this offtopic stuff ;) Just that you know, whats going on.. Hoping that i soon will be finished with sorting my bricks so i will be able to start my entry for the current challenge.. Best regards! Edited March 31, 2012 by Rolli

The telesope part is too weak for that tree style so don't go ordering a bunch of the telescope. I was able to come up with a better solution. I am curious what you came up with! For me the scopes worked well. My larger trees went 8-9 scopes high and I had no problems with them. Well I didn't have too many stalks attached, maybe that extra weight makes the difference.
Captain BeerBeard Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 @Mephistopheles This is made with sticks going through the middle for a strong tree. I used 1x1 round bricks instead of the telescope. I used the long sticks that you get for Ninjago weapon's. You can put sticks through the branch hole's for added strength because they're easy to hide. I imagine if you put two 1x1 round bricks inbetween every layer you can get a better effect with the flower stems. Thinking about it now, it can be made stronger using a 2x2 round brick at the base with a long stick in it. The 2x2 round brick might just be better all together going all the way up. Do get what I'm saying?
soccerkid6 Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 Wow that tree works really well Good work guys!
Skalldyr Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 But while your here stay a bit and have some of our famous BlakeBaery Wine :) My good dear, this is pure genius! I'm really getting hungry right now...
natesroom Posted April 1, 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 (edited) Dear guild members! I think I might have come up with a new tree technique. I was just thinking that at my LEGO store the have the green stalks as a PAB item... you could probably get way more in a cup for a cheaper price then ordering. I'm sure you could get one of your guild brothers to hook you up! Edited April 2, 2012 by natesroom

Do get what I'm saying? YAY!!!! This is exactly the effect I was looking for! You rock! I totally get what you are saying I will give it a try. Now imagine a forest built with this tree technique with trees of different height so that some of the leaf layers overlap. You can make an incredibly dense forest. The trick will be to leave more space between the lowest leaf layer and the ground so a minifig can stand in there and you can make photos from the figs perspective looking up. Imagine a road leading through such a forest. The leaf layers overlap above the road. Now my only complaint is that these stalks are not available in dark green...
Captain BeerBeard Posted April 1, 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 What is this" Mary Poppins" saying? I'm very confused?!
robuko Posted April 1, 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 Forest-loving friends, you may also know of the flowering guava of Kaliphlin Which is renowned for the varied angles of its branches. The PGTC can arrange shipment of trees and fruit for suitable carriage fees.
Doornroosje Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 Hey all! Great new tree technique! Well, I finally found my inspiration back and started building again. Here is a sneak preview of my free build for Avalonia. A lot of details are lost, but I will try to make some better pictures this weekend and post it. (sorry photography is totally not my thing....) I was supposed to be a herb garden for the Green Riders head of Medicine at Arod Mearas, but it turned out a lot more flowery than herbal ;-). What can I say, I just love gardening and went a little crazy with the new friends flowers, butterflies, ladybugs and lots of colours.

Looks great! cant wait to see more photos. the entry to the garden looks great and I like building as well. I too need to get my mojo back. I have three builds that are unfinished due life getting in the way. I might just build a small vignette to get back in the swing of things.
Derfel Cadarn Posted April 2, 2012 Author Posted April 2, 2012 Looks great from what I can see, good to see some more free builds coming along. How is everyone doing with challenge 3? How many of you are entering?
MikeyB Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 Looks great from what I can see, good to see some more free builds coming along. How is everyone doing with challenge 3? How many of you are entering? I plan to. Challenge 2 came to me at the last minute and came together pretty quickly but I had issues with finalizing a plan. this time I have an idea and some of the details I want to include figured out already. I have a couple ideas for my guardian but depending on which one I choose, I don't think I will have to make a bricklink order for this one. Biggest issue right now is time.
