de Gothia Posted September 10, 2012 Posted September 10, 2012 (edited) I use Gimp and after some explanation by Nice marmot it´s very easy to use! I think the background adds very much to the moc itself. Seeing floors, walls, computers and other stuff draw the eyes away from the moc. Hope to finsih a moc showing Eachans and a new charachter in de Gothias life! Edited September 10, 2012 by de Gothia
Legonardo Posted September 10, 2012 Posted September 10, 2012 Sounds cool. What exactly is Gimp? I use photoshop, does anyone have some comparison? ~Legonardo
MikeyB Posted September 10, 2012 Posted September 10, 2012 Sounds cool. What exactly is Gimp? You can find it free online if you want to try it out but if your familar with Photoshop, it kind of like driving someone else's car. It will get you where you are going but your a little uncomfortable because the knobs and bits are in different places.
Captain Blackmoor Posted September 10, 2012 Posted September 10, 2012 A quick glance at the construction site of the Avalonia Trading Company warehouse and the A.T.C. shipyard! Just don't look at the mess. The front of the warehouse, it will be a tall building, probably the highest except for the Albion Gate complex. The Warehouse will contain Albion's water, food, timber supply and many other things. The main A.T.C. office and the A.T.C. treasury will be located in the headquarters, the next building. The warehouse will have two defensive towers (1 has been completed as seen in the picture) in order to protect the precious goods inside. A huge crane system operated by horses will also be implemented. The warehouse will also be a long building, it now occupies 3 plates but it will become 6. One important question for you fellow guildsmen! The roof colour; dark orange or dark green like my previous buildings? And here we have the A.T.C. Trade Vessel, featuring a huge spacious hold for all the cargo and a relative high mast. A modern capstan to increase efficiency. Not many men are required to sail this ship because it's simplicity, which makes it quite cheap to own! It includes a new hull design, and I'm glad to call this still a WIP as it's not a flawless technique yet. The vessel is unarmed. Just because an escort ship is waiting to be built. And it will be a large ship for sure. (Carrack anyone?) Things slowed down past weeks, but the A.T.C. continues expanding! Now I thank you for your presence at the A.T.C. construction site and shipyard!
Captain Settle Posted September 10, 2012 Posted September 10, 2012 Fantastic build Captain Blackmoor. Did the beverages in the background help you come up with some ideas?
Captain Blackmoor Posted September 10, 2012 Posted September 10, 2012 I was already afraid someone would notice them. They are in fact a present for a friend of mine, so I can't touch them. Although a beer or two gives fantastic results!
MikeyB Posted September 10, 2012 Posted September 10, 2012 Great builds! For the roof I would go with Dark Green, just seems like it would fit in better with the colors there. And love the ship, I love ships and never have tried one before so I think I might have to give one a go soon!

Bricktooth Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 So, Challenge 5 is out now, what do you think? I really like the idea, but the biggest challenge for me is the size. I'm no expert in large MOCs, which means I'm usually facing big problems when I attempt to build something larger than 16x16. I don't own enough parts to build anything that size without it becoming too bland, so excuse me if I don't have an entry ready.

Note that there's nothing in the challenge that says it has to be a 32x32 building. It could be an empty 32x32 field with a few big standing stones (a la Stonehenge) and the shacks and shanties of the camp around them. Or a few trees, and a clearing in the middle of them with the camp. Or a bare, windswept mountaintop with a sacred shrine on top. It might be kind of interesting to see how good an entry you could make with minimal bricks. If someone comes up with something innovative and minimalist, I'd probably give them more points than yet another big dark-bluish-gray gothic temple-y looking building...
Bricktooth Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 The Stonehenge one is a great idea, I might try to build something like that, but tell me if you want to enter something like that, because I don't want to steal your idea.

No, go for it. It's more Avalonian, and I've got a bunch of other Kaliphlin-style ideas I'm trying to sort out.
MikeyB Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 Ok, thanks for the inspiration! One way to approach this build is to spend some time building a couple small details (nice monoliths, a nice tent and scene with a blacksmith with a makeshift forge ) and then put them on to a landscape. this build is going to be about the details IMO. Remember not to leave it all flat. a hill in the middle with a path leading up with some steps would be fairly easy. I think you will realize you will run out of room fairly quickly on 32 x 32
Bricktooth Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 I've got an idea with a couple of monoliths in the center, with the differnet areas all on different elevations, maybe with arches between the monoliths.

This looks impressive, and is in a much more completed state than the GEAR Co. Docks! Can't wait to see your finished product.
Captain Blackmoor Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 Thank you. Although I'm a bit worried now, as the fifth guild challenge's deadline is set for 11 November, which is just a month while I have so much other stuff planned.

soccerkid6 Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 uhm its September... I think he is referring to Challenge V; not the design a 5th guild minichallenge
Captain Blackmoor Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 My fault, 2 months. Somehow I just missed October.. Perhaps I'm able to brew something up but then I should make haste with the warehouse, and I don't like it to haste.
Legonardo Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 (edited) I think he is referring to Challenge V; not the design a 5th guild minichallenge Yes, I was pointing out that it's September now not October. My fault, 2 months. Somehow I just missed October.. Allgood Cap'n! I get mucked up with the months heaps of the time, I am seriously surprised that I am the one correcting somebody, it's always been the other way around. ~Legonardo Edited September 13, 2012 by Legonardo
blue banana Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 Regarding this Challenge V size discussion: It just heavily depends on what you're going for. It's pretty easy to throw in some green bricks for a landscape and you have a lot of time to work on the details. On the other side if you are going for the ancient dwarven fortress (my idea, but I'm not sure if I should put the money and effort in it, and if I can realize my imagination), 32x32 or 48x48 (which I would prefer, if the halls should be high) can be VERY brick consuming and bricklink is already awaiting your Euros (Pounds, Dollars, whatever). I'm jealous of everyone who has the bricks to realize these projects without buying parts. The small farm I built ate almos my entire collection, except for the fancy colors being Yellow, Red, Orange and that. I think there are ways to go big without using tons of bricks, but of course there are restrictions...
Ecclesiastes Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 Nice WIP, but I like that lentebock at the background more And the other one.. I guess a karakter?
Angeli Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 My fault, 2 months. Somehow I just missed October.. I was also sure that we hade one month :) Now I can build relaxed (but I know, I won't build anything for first month, and then I will be rushing trough last few weeks trying to finish ;) On the other hand, Waterdeep was the most relaxed build of all the challenges; I was building during the evening, while watching some show on pc, or just listening to the music, with no pressure, because I've started on time - and the base was smaller then I usually go; on bigger bases, at one point, five days until the end I realize that I have to finish 20 more things, each requesting a day of building :) And for me, when I HAVE to do something, it fast stops being pleasure, and becomes obligation. So, I will start building tonight ;) and enjoy every second, instead of "building" my self into oblivion :)

You don't have to build something big, and if you absolutely have to have that building, you can always just build a small part of it in the corner of your dio and add landscaping, ruins and the like to the rest of it.
