Dannylonglegs Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 I believe "bat people" are called gargoyles. -Sci That's even cooler! I was hesitant to call them that because they are brown, not grey as I would traditionally envision a gargoyle. Perhaps it's a preliminary color? ~Insectoid Aristocrat Quote

CM4Sci Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 Bat people are called gargoyles? I haven't heard that before. Not that I'm the kind of person fascinated by monsters. Oh. From what I know, those creatures are called gargoyles. -Sci Quote
dr jones Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 I believe "bat people" are called gargoyles. -Sci Gargoyles are stones statues in the shape of animals or men. They are from the Gothic art, if I'm not mistaken. And so are to be found on Gothic buildings like churches and the like. So they're not persé Bats. Quote
SoupOrFishOil Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 So they're not persé Bats. Okay, that's the part that confused me Thanks everyone Quote

It would be nice to see some gargoyles. ~Insectoid Aristocrat Quote

Aanchir Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 Technically, gargoyles are statue representations of winged monsters or 'bat people' Even more technically, they're only gargoyles if they spit water when it rains. Ones that don't spit water are called "grotesques". I think the bat people are more likely to be mutant slaves of Dracula or something. You know, because of the whole bat-vampire connection. But that's just my opinion. Quote

I concur, If anyone saw the action film, Van Helsing, I imagine they're similar to Drac's babies. I'm still impressed that lego came up with an entirely new arm piece than functions with the traditional hand but does not follow the typical arm design. Fascinating. ~Insectoid Aristocrat Quote
Peppermint_M Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 Gargoyles have the guttering running through them or on more ancient stone castles are outlets near the roof or on the top of towers. Both them and grotesques were put in place to scare away evil spirits and to look generally alarming to those approaching. They can take any number of forms but a more modern revival of Gothic architecture lead to the winged humanoids popularised in the US which led to the famous look of Gotham and the epenonymous cartoon series "Gargoyles". My favourite castle has some particularly interesting types of each. (Raglan Castle for those interested). Quote
Sid Sidious Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 The Monster Fighters in the mummy and swamp monster sets look kind of like rednecks. Quote
Saruman the White Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 There are so many good themes coming next year and a few bad ones being discounted which I'm glad to hear. Monster Fighters and Lord of the rings are going to be the two best themes of the year. Quote
ProducePrincess Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 Theres some nice classic lego charm going on with this theme , it really is good to see them bring back the ideas from time cruisers and studios. I am however disapointed with the new ghosts as there isn't a need for them to change the older style ghosts. Quote
Jargo Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 I've never been a fan of the ghost shroud. Perhaps with the new one if they'd had the arms out to the sides [like the 'gargoyles'] with ghostly wrapping hanging off the arms and a head more akin to a minifig I might be a fan. The old and new ghost just look too cartoon-ish to me. An easy pass on the train set. I'll probably not bother with this theme besides the minifigs I like. The monster fighters themselves, the vampires, Frankenstein and monster if they look ok. The vehicles don't interest me and nor do the settings. The rehashing and meshing of old themes is starting to bore me. I'd prefer to get a bunch of themed minifigs on a theme in a simple box without a bunch of bricks. I don't have money to spend on expensive sets just to get a few parts I want. I suspect a lot of people feel the same. Maybe it's time Lego went back to the old 'six minifigures in a box' set idea. pocket money sized to cater for poorer purchasers. battlepacks don't cut it. though there's room for those too I'd just prefer to have a biodegradable box than a plastic blister and one of each minifig instead of multiples of the same minifig. Quote
Jargo Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 Yes Lego minifigs are cartoon-ish. The ghost seems too much so. too lacking in detail, I just don't see it as a ghost like I can see the skeleton as a skeleton. I think the ghost needs to look more like a minifig maybe even make the whole minifig out of GITD plastic. ghosts appear like the person or creature that lived. the spectral horses in the mummy set look somewhat right. The shroud type ghost seems like a fancy dress costume. If Lego are going to do ghosts they should take the design cues from pirates and castle and town to create more credible and cohesive ghost characters. Full minifigures with headgear and accessories like matching spectral swords or guns or whatever. the shroud ghost is just silly. Fit for Duplo, not system. Quote
