Thego Posted January 29, 2012 Posted January 29, 2012 But please, for the love of Mary Shelley's ghost, stop calling that monster "Frankenstein"! If anything at all, its proper nomenclature would be "Dr. Frankenstein's creature" or if you prefer "monster" but not "Frankenstein"! That was its creator's name and didn't ever pass onto the creature, EVER! And do not try do defend your misnomers with "pop-culture", as it will always remain plain wrong. Do that fantastic work of gothic-literature a solid and employ the proper names, please! You have it in your hands to shape your own perception of things; do not find excuses in the past errors of others, or simply put: Just because the names are terrible messed up in the general populace's mind, noone stops you to remedy the damage done! Be well! Cutty p.s.: do not try to start an argument with me here, I KNOW I'm right in what I say and pop-culture is wrong. Any contadictory statements are thus by default trollage of the highest order! And please try to understand this is not me patronising or lecturing anyone, but just a neutral corrective statement where it's direly due! If you still do not trust my words, google up yourself the original text. It should be available somewhere as it's become public domain by now. Whilst you are correct in reference to Shelley's work, I would however suggest that it is okay to refer to the monster as 'Frankenstein' as it serves as a metanym in modern parlance. Quote
SpiderSpaceman Posted January 29, 2012 Posted January 29, 2012 The top says AlexandreBoudonBillund2010. We all know where Lego HQ is, and 2010 seems like the right amount of time for minifigs to go from concept art to reality, especially with the CM4 minifigs. A mythology theme has been a very popular wished-for theme, so I wouldn't be surprised if these are real, and we will see it in 2013 or 2014. It's interesting to see the other monsters. They are probably minifigs that were scrapped for Monster Fighters, but it would be cool if they come in future sets. Edit: I looked at the Mythology stuff again, and it appears he did this as part of his portfolio, probably for the hiring process. Thank you - I knew "unrelated fan art" made no sense. The swamp monster, while filling the role, looks nothing like any established generic swamp monster trope I know of. It would make no sense for virtually the same design to show up in two places by "monkeys typing shakespeare" or "great minds think alike". Quote

To me it looks exactly like a stereotypical prepresentation of a swamp monster. I wonder whether the fig is finalized, or, if Toth is really working on the theme (is he?), whether that's just his fig as a placeholder, with the actual fig looking differently. I hope the first alternative is correct, as the torso is a bit different, as was mentioned, and the fig can hardly be made better than it already seems. Except, maybe the lime green hip piece - why would a swamp monster use underpants (made of seaweed or what)? Quote

SpiderSpaceman Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 (edited) Really? To me it looks exactly like a stereotypical prepresentation of a swamp monster. Well I'm just saying: never seen a swamp monster with webbed feet sticking out of its head, and I've been a fan of that look since childhood, due to lego's dragon mold and the frilled lizard guy from jurassic park. The big slitted eyes aren't looking familiar to me on a swamp monster either The "black lagoon" creature is all gills. All non-Black Lagoon swamp monsters I know are made of vegetation or big furry loup garous. Edit: actually I lied about the slitted eyes: want your living daylights scared out? this is the Audubon Zoo's idea of a swamp monster Edited January 30, 2012 by SpiderSpaceman Quote
TomRoid Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 Well the stereotypical Swamp Monster is the one we associate with, and why bother changing that now? Quote
Itaria No Shintaku Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 All pieces are available through customer service, and have been for years. I don't think it will harm sales any more than it has in past years. Furthermore true AFOLs know well the meaning of the word BRICKLINK, and who doesn't, has always an EBAY in his pocket. Quote
surrideo Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 Furthermore true AFOLs know well the meaning of the word BRICKLINK, and who doesn't, has always an EBAY in his pocket. Yeah not always that keen to use either of those two just for figures. Ever wondered how some Bricklink stores and ebay sellers get so many of certain minifigures?. Some will get them by legitimate means but so many of my friends are now coming across and ignorantly buying tampered sets at retail. I love Lego but I'm very wary of the secondary/grey markets. Poison Ivy Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 This looks like a very fun theme. Hopefully it won't follow the one-wave trend of late and continue for some time, I could see real possibilities for this. Quote
Jargo Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 The Swamp thing movie from the 1980's had Swamp thing fairly smooth skinned and was distincly non-vegetable. Quote
Ogre Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 (edited) I think the brilliant designer Toth is working for LEGO now, as you can take a look at the preliminary images from the sets, the swamp monster is in one of the sets.. and in Dracula's castle you can see Dracula's bride, maybe she is going to have Toth's face design.. or maybe the entire fig! EDIT: guys take a look at this http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_IV9W5sKJdTg/TCH_fG6r7sI/AAAAAAAAAOk/kmaOmqo5kGE/s1600/Page+03.jpg !!!!!!!! Oh, wow! Seriously, if all those were to make it into LEGO sets, I would be one SERIOUSLY HAPPY Ogre! Especially that "giant body" that he designed (second link)! (and did you see his 'fantasy castle' stuff? *swoon*) Edited January 31, 2012 by Ogre Quote
Sid Sidious Posted January 31, 2012 Posted January 31, 2012 Is anyone going to be at the German Toy Fair tomorrow? Can you get some Monster Fighters pictures if you can? Quote
Jargo Posted February 1, 2012 Posted February 1, 2012 yes please do. if nothing else then pics of the other MF minifigs would be fantastic. Quote
Lothos Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 I wouldn't mind seeing those "Ghost Hunter" sets that the dude drew. Sure, they looked like ghost busters but who wouldn't want an ecto-1 in lego form? Quote
Poison Ivy Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 Is anyone going to be at the German Toy Fair tomorrow? Can you get some Monster Fighters pictures if you can? Sorry, but the Nuremberg Toy Fair appears to have a no-photo policy this year. So, no Monster Fighters pictures until NYC Toy Fair in about a week and a half. Quote
Still Raindrop Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 I wasn't so sure whether LEGO was being lazy or ingenious by releasing what looked like slightly modified Time Twisters and Studios sets, but now I'm leaning towards ingenious; the builds (from what I can tell) and the figures are huge improvements! Interestingly enough, this is one of the few recent action themes where the heroes seem to be as unique as the villains. I actually rather prefer the heroes in this one, although the monsters look good, too. I'm pleasantly surprised with the way they managed to differentiate them from the collectible minifigures versions, particularly "the Monster" (I think that "Frankenstein" is an acceptable term; not because of pop culture, but because the creature, unnamed in Shelley's work, would have presumably taken the name of his "father," Dr. Frankenstein). Sid Sidious Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 Since it appears that we aren't getting pictures of the line today, does anyone who was at the toy fair have prices for the sets? Quote
surrideo Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 Ok so I'll be having one of those trains! Quote
Wardancer Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 (edited) From EB member october Does the werewolf sit in leaves in a new type of green? Or is it just the lighting of the picture? PS: The new ghosts look EVIL! Edited February 3, 2012 by Wardancer Quote
SoupOrFishOil Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 That Vampire Castle is great! I hardly ever get expensive sets, but I'll make an effort for that! Anybody know the price of it? Anyway, that would probably be the only set I get. I don't really care for any of the others too much, except for the ghost train and some of the heros' vehicles. Quote
Sid Sidious Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 The plane in the prelim ghost train sucked. This one looks so much better. I wish the Fighter vehicles had a unified color scheme though. I love the printed piece at the front of the train also. Quote
Holmes Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 Really looking forward to these sets. I really wanna see the vampire hearse, I'm hoping it isn't that car seen outside of Dracula's castle as that would be really disappointing to what I had in mind. I also want to see the 'Zombies' set that we know very little about Quote
