Mr Athos raised an interesting point in the Talk like a Pirate Day thread. He suggests holding a Pirate MOC building competition like CCC may stimulate more interest in the Pirate theme while The LEGO Company is no longer releasing new SYSTEM Pirate sets.

I'm not saying there WILL be a Pirate MOC competition any time soon, I'm just curious to know who would participate or what it would take to entice someone to participate.

Cast your vote and ideally post to tell everyone what you voted for and why!

Should this be new MOCs or will it be allowed to participate with an already existing MOC?

I guess it would preferable to have only new ones ...

Since I'm building a ship right now, I would participate if there is not to much time pressure.

Well, I'm a slow builder and sometimes build part of a ship and change it again after looking at it for some days.

Also I need to order from time to time some special parts on Bricklink (which again takes time to arrive...).

Conclusion: I would participate if we had till the end of the year (for example) to complete the MOC.

The fine details of a competition haven't been planned so things like whether it needs to be a new MOC or how long entries are open dor is undecided.

I'm just doing some research to determine whether its something we could pursue in the future.

If you give me the time...I have a question about the prize, what do you mean with that? an online prize or a real life prize? I don't get.... are progress mocs also allowed??? If you build a moc, will the name also matter?

And who will be the jury?

I think they should look at the following points:

-Creativity

-Design(nice look)

-Design(does it works, does it looks sturdy)

And off course, has the creator take time and love to create a new moc, or does he just rushes a crap moc to win a contest?

those are offcourse not the only points, but I can't come up with more points at the moment...

The prize would be a real life prize of course!

The MOC could be in progress but it would obviously have to be completed by the submission date.

I can't really answer the questions at the moemnt as the details would be decided if there was really going to be a competition. However, throwing ideas about can't hurt.

At the moment I'm just seeing if there is enough interest and if there is I might arrange something in the future. But don't be expecting a competition any time soon because there is much work in other areas to be done first.

Prizes definately stimulate participation. I know Lego sometimes donates prizes for competitions, perhaps you might be able to broker a similar deal... though with eurobricks reputation for not 'respecting-the-brick,' that might be an iffy proposition.

As for the rules, I'd model it on the CCC, though maybe less expansive in scale, as this will be the first run. Have a couple of categories (let's say: Ship, Fortress/Island/Base, Vignette, Minifig and then something like Best-Use-of-a-Rowboat). With a prize for each, possibly corresponding to the category. Then have very clear rules.

Just my thoughts,

Steve

P.S. My answers:

-Moderately interested in competition

-Prize would help, but since I have most sets, its not a big deal to me. I enter contests only when inspiration strikes and mostly for bragging rights...

-Moderate fan of pirates. While I own nearly all the sets, I have not made many MOCs.

???? BTW this "respect the brick" fbtb thing doesn't have any interest for me. I'd rather see people respecting themselves than a brick...

And we already get set to review from TLC, like for instance the batcave (soon to be published). So I really don't think your comment reflects the actual relation we have with TLC : we are in excellent term, never has been better.

I'll enter if there is one, but I'll need time aswell. A lot of stuff to do right now, october is usually a busy period for everyone in term of work. |-/ But count me in !

Well then I apologize for my mistaken impression and retract my previous statements...

I always enjoy a good moc competition, and no prize is neccessary for me.

SuvieD tried to do the ship moc contest, which never had a good follow through yet.

It was too open ended and not very clear on the prize issue( he said no prizes twice and a prize for someone once *wacko* ) Oh well, as i said I don't need a reward to participate, but I wouldn't turn one down either.

Here are some suggestions for moc contest catagories;

Best minifig,

best fort, outpost,

other land based buildings\towns,

ships of different classes or sizes,

senery-islands, bays, reefs,

sea creatures(my favorite).

feel free to suggest some more.

Maybe the prize could be a personalized signature similar to the moderators, a trophy icon, or something to do with ranking when/if it is revived.

Extremely: It be alot of fun and one of my first Pirate competitons.

A prize would help, but I'm not fussed how big it is:

Not that much of wanting of a prize but this is the closest. It'd be fun anyway prive or no prize.

I have a moderate interest:

As i have said some post a while ago, i am a big SW fanatic. I SW comes first in lego, but Pirates is always second. More to do. Looking forward to one of my first Pirate ships mocs.

I'd like to think in the future this forum will be self sufficient and be able to fund its own prizes, so for that we'd need sponsorship or advertising. But first would come the cost of upkeep, then anything left over could be accrued for prizes.

It definitely won't be any time soon. This is more an expression of interest thread, than an advertisement.

If you are going to do this you will need multiple categories, multiple prizes that may be actual sets, custom sets, figures, or other worthy prizes. You will want to have the building period open for around 2-3 months so plenty of entries can be entered and have a strict rule base to prevent any confusion.

And for the record, I did not start a contest for ship building. I issued a challange to encourage others to try build a ship. Nothing more. My personal challange was declined and was not open for everyone.

Phes, if you need prizes or ideas let me know. I am willing to help out.

I'd be interested, may even spur m into a pirate MOC if my bricks aren't otherwise occupied. Rule wise the CC ones seem fairly efficient although I would like to see one category judged more on playability and another more on detail/construction so that those two aren't going head to head... Prizes would be great...

God Bless,

Nathan

What are your ideas for prizes and generating the funds to acquire them?

organize a car wash or have a web click-a-thon to generate the revenue. prizes are of course misb pirate sets from bricklink! :-P
