One thing that I would say about competitions, timeframe from start to judgement is a biggie. Having some good entries up quickly will inspire others, but you also need enough time for people to throughly complete their projects (particularly the younger members with less experience and likely less parts).

OKay, when are the entries??

If this will stand, we should get us a signature image like they did for the "create a hero" competition, and how much time would we get for this? It must be at least as long as a bricklink order time, I think the longest one I ever had took 6 weeks, so at least 6 weeks. But MOCing takes time as well, can vary from 2 hours to 3 months, we must get plenty of time for this...

Mr Tiber, in my very first post I wrote

"I'm not saying there WILL be a Pirate MOC competition any time soon, I'm just curious to know who would participate or what it would take to entice someone to participate."

There are many more important things to be done with the forum before we can even dream about competitions.

I was just joking X-D

But there was a create a hero contest, so why couldn't there be a Pirate MOC competition??

Because competitions take time and money to organise - and who'd have to organise a Pirate MOC competition in this forum? That would be... ME!

Right now I don't have the time and we certainly don't have the funds for prizes. Those are two things that will need to change before we can even seriously contemplate staging a competition.

Maybe we should perhaps start with a small competition, like vigs, with small prizes, like minifigs, then decide to move on to bigger mocs and prizes.

Also, if Mr. Phes is to busy or something, perhaps some one else of higher ranking take on the task, if they are willingly too.

Just some suggestions I'd like to make :-) .

Suggestions are always welcome Imperial Scouts!

I do agree we should probably start off with a small competition just so we don't bite off more than we can chew. I think no more than 2 or 3 categories at most given there's only 23 users interested, which would give us 7 or 8 entries per category.

Just a thought...

If you were willing to go in with History and adventure, we could have an all things historical EB contest, I might even be pressed into doing a bit of admin/providing a prize for that...

If it is all out historical, give me about a year until my keep is done and I'll enter :-P

I think it would get more attention, we could even advertise on other sites...

I'm satisfied that there is enough interest for pirates alone. I don't want the first competition to be very big anyway because I have no experience running them. My idea would be to start small and gradually get bigger with experience.

Coordinating a historical theme competition would obviously be a lot bigger and I'm not confidient enough to do that yet.

Classic-Castle, for instance? That's really the only other I could think of. What others are you thinking of?

Yes and Lugnet...

Sorry just noticed this:

A good competition has a lot of well built entries, frankly I don't think EB pirates has enough active members to pull off a decent comp.

Reasons for:

-Bigger is better ;-)

-Since a comp can really only take place once a year (without clashes, unless it is really small) why begin too small, growing could take a long time...

-You wouldn't have to coordinate alone (unless you don't want help)

-I was kicking about ideas for an EB comp anyway (H and A based, but figured it needed to go wider to get enough interest)

-The more inclusive the less complications

-More people to help with prizes

-A better advertiser for EB as a whole

Reasons against:

-Not exclusively pirate; but he, as we get more interest it could easily split...

God Bless,

Nathan

You're probably right about not having enough active members to pull off a decent competition. But I'm not holding a big competition for my first competition so, either someone else holds it or I hold a small one.

What about the minifig conpetition in H&A, the Halloween Minifig Contest, that appears to be a rather small one, ideally how the entrants are, a MOC fig and a description.

If you need help with a bigger competition I'd be more than glad to help. I"ve been to alot of competitions on various sites, one even at a local toy store ( got second place :-D ), and gain knowledge about them,( most important thing i think of is: Think it out well and hard enough

I'd be happy to help (since I was thinking o an EB one anyway) but I'm not sure if I have the senority for that...

The reason I was thinking about a Pirate MOC Competition is to promote the Pirate Forum. But if we introduce other themes then obviously it no longer becomes a Pirate MOC Competition.

But as for your idea, a combined theme MOC competition, how do you propose raising funds for the prizes?

I was thinking donations... I'll chip in one in the right setting, you?, one or two others and you have a comp...

If it wasn't such a serious one, then just an acknoladgement badge or something is good. But like Mr.Norro said, donations, I think as well, are good. Say we make some sort of sig fig to sell, the problam is, we'd spend the money on the parts and get only little extra money from it. I'm not sure much else that could be done in order to gain money?? Also, a minor problem for donations is currency. I'm not exactly sure why it'd be a problem than only thinking of fees to exchange. Another note is sets, or whatever the prizes are, are different prices in different countries. That could inflict problems with how much is donated. But overall, I'm for donations.

Any further thoughts... I reckon this would have to happen in the summer (to avoid clashing with CC, and also because many EB posters are students.)

There are these things called advertisements... They generate revenue if people bother to click on them.

Advertisments in the forum??? IMO, I wouldn't like that much. I find advertisments very annoying at times.

I think I've mentioned this a couple of times but I'm not planning on any competitions in the near future. It would be next July at the very earliest.

No, they wouldn't be in the forum they'd be on the future Pirate LEGO Homepage. But it would depend on the type of advertisement and how much revenue they generated. Most likely Google Ads because they're inconspicuous.

I don't intend to spend much of my own money on a competition, so the funding will have to come from other sources and I don't care if its advertisements or something else.
