Very Impressive! Loved your carronade in last post. Love the detail I'm definately borrowing some of this. I use the same sort of crew as you do. Blue soldier officers for British navy officers, Blue Jacketed with brown shirt and buttons for Petty Officers, and the blue jacket and striped shirt for regular crew. Although only my Captain has yellow epaulettes, the other officers have blue. Didn't see any royal marines in your "Big Vig" maybe they're ashore causing trouble.

You should make more big vigs and conect them together to make a ship!

Hi ImperialScouts,

That's sounds great but I have filled this MOC with a lot of details because it's just a big vig (thx Berry) and I wonder if that wouldn't be too much for a complete ship, it would be encumbered?!

To make a ship with that level of detail you'd need to make it huuuuuuuuuge to prevent the encumbernig. It would also take many pieces and a lot of time to complete such a venture.

Baron Sat, how long did it take you to make this Ship Vignette?

Posted

True. It would be massive, and lots of pieces and time. However, perhaps if it could be made into a community project? And maybe send it somewhere. I heard there was a museum filled with lego exhibits. Just a thought. :-)

A community project? Exactly how does that work Mr ImperialScouts? Not everyone (well many) do not have the building abilities of Baron Sat and so therefore the result would be full of inconsistency. I know with my current ability if I attempting to contrbute that it would pale in comparission to what Baron Sat has done.

Yes, yes, I realise this young chap (or are you an old chap?) and ideas are great things to have! However, maybe I was being somewhat cynical but I was also trying to be realistic as well.

Still, don't let that stop you from expressing your ideas though, because ideas can be revised and expanded upon, and possiblity put to use elsewhere. So never hold back, if you have something to suggest then do it!

Difficult to say as I do many things at the same time. About 10 hours.

To answer another question, the vig is a part in the rear middle of the ship. To make a complete model that would take about 8 to 10 vigs for each side (port side and starboard).

So a community project could be an idea.

The other vigs would be on the same basis and members who would participate could help each other in the building.

There's one big problem with connecting vigs it's about the masts. They would be cut longitudinally so very fragile!!!

I used technic ball joints. A little to big but I like them much better than 1x1 round bricks.

I don't think they look too big, but obviously they're going to be too big to function with a LEGO cannon however, who really wants to fire the cannon all day long? That novelty wore about 14 years ago for me!

Baron Sat, you seem to have quite an extensive piece selection and I'm curious as to how long it took you to amass the pieces for this vignette/diarama? Did you already have all the pieces or did you order some especially?

Is that a wine bottle I spy in the lower left corner of this pic? Is that a TLC product?

Yes it is, it might be the bottle from this set.

Wow, I had no idea that piece existed. It would make a great addition to pirate sets, especially to change it up a little from the basic wine cup or rum barrel. It's annoying how little representation these elaborate pieces get in system themes.

I suggested a similar plan back in this thread and it might be a good idea once the Pirate Fan-base is more established. Before we can commit to such a project we need a "standard".

Ooops! I could have sworn you two were identical twins! I'll try again...

What do you mean "by standard" Mr Syedow? A standard in design? A standard as in terms of quality? Or some other standard which escapes my mind right now?

Unless you did these big vigs as cross sections of the entire ship instead of port or starboard sections

Sorry I didn't get what you mean?

Not enough of parts, even if my drawers say the opposite. :-D

But I had all the parts, generally I try to build with my stock, excepted if suddenly I need 20 green radar dishes.

The only ones I should have ordered are the Technic cams in black, but the time I think that my MOC was completed.

Could it be? Have I found my long lost twin at last?! :-D

Yes, Mister Phes, a standard design was what I was basically getting at. To formulate an idea, read (er glance at) this thread. A "community ship" project would be a more complicated task, because for one, ships have a stern (and to a lesser extent, bow). Then there's the color coordination factor (a castle wall only needs to be grey to match the other wall sections). There's also the need to decide upon different standards for each class of ship. But it's important not to make these rules too strict as to lessen the creative abilities of our fellow Pirate MOCceteers! *pirate* :-D

It might be fun to hold a contest to see who can design the best "template-standard" for each section of the ship (bow, stern, and the different levels of the ship)~{After the dimensions have been decided upon.}. Hopefully those could be adapted for the different ship classes. (As noted on the castle page, anything can be done with the walls as long as they retain the "standard". Likewise there should be a good amount of room for interpretation of the "standard".)

Actually, I think Baron Sat is trying to achieve some kind of consistency with the non Solider mini-figures. Three of them seem to have the same torso and a red bandana, so I'm wondering if those three are a particular class of sailor and that torso has been chosen to represent a uniform.

Baron Sat, could you shed some light on this matter?

Hi Mr Phes,

I must confess that I'm not an historian and I don't really know how things work on a ship. My use of uniforms is to suggest there are civilians and soldiers on the same ship. The officers wear epaulettes and a vests, the men at cannons have a military styled suits because they are soldiers too. And the guy who clean the deck is a sailor.

This boat isn't a war ship but a commercial vessel with some armament and soldiers in case it met some pirates. Is this idea unreal? Does anyone here have an history diploma, that would help?

I think my next MOC will be about Sci-Fi so I won't have to explain why my hyper-plasma-powered-universe-bender is made with trans orange bricks instead of trans yellow ones. Excepted if some Trekkie is around :-D

Actually if this is a commercial vessel there would be no soldiers on it at all. Governments did not(and never have) put soldiers onto a ship not part of their Navy or some other government-run institution.

Basically none of the people on board would be soldiers, all would be dressed in regular civilian clothing(of course with the captain having more money, he may have nicer looking clothing). Most ships did not classifiy different "types" of sailors with different uniforms either.

But pfft, who cares? It's an awesome MOC...I wouldn't dare to even dream of building stuff like that... X-D

Hmm, I'm no historian either, but what about the possibility of hired mercenaries? And a hearty Ahoy! to ye ConductorJoe. Have you been lurking the pirate forum? Will you be posting more often on Eurobricks? (It's been a while since I last you!)

Good thinking, I never thought of mercenaries. If only they made soldier torsos not used for soldiers in 99% of Pirate MOCs X-D

Yeah I've been lurking Eurobricks for a while. Reading news and stuff. I've been meaning to try and find time to post more for quite a while. It's on my To-Do list... X-D

(That Ecks Dee emote is awesome, kudos to whoever made it X-D )

Yes, unfortunately (Everything's been so unfortunate... I need to find another word!) the Pirate Theme was not given enough time to take advantage of the possibilities!

Well, it's good to know that you plan to eventually spend more time here! How is your site and how long is this To-Do list? (Excuses, excuses, excuses... :-|) :-D

That has a name? Well it is nice, but the browless version is pretty funny (reminds me of an oriental :-P).

EB is great, I wish I had time to spend here. But with school, my website, tests, everything...I just don't have time.

My site is going great, gets more active every day. *sweet*

Lol the browless version is wierd... :-P

Just a thought. maybe that of a much smaller scale. I am only saying these as ideas. I don't have the building abilities either.

If you lads what to start a community project then by all means go ahead. Imperial Scouts can create a new thread so you can begin discussing and planning.

As you all should know, we occasionally pick up old MOCs that haven't been blogged on Classic-Pirates.com (usually because they are too old) but really deserve it. I think this is the case with this one so excuse me for bumping this thread and expect this wonderful MOC to be blogged soon!
