But I'm lucky to say that some of the (more experienced) members of my local THW organisation will probably join the helping forces there... (propably because it's not already sure if they are needed there.,... But at least they show that they are willing!! :oo A shame that I am too young to help... (24 minimum age...)) Today so many people are giving money and there is a competition between the countries to see who's gonna give the more money. So today they have way too much money and they don't even know how to spend it. Think about it... I know we all want to do something but you know... You know what, save your money fo some months, let time pass and then donate in 5 months when all the funds already disappeared *we don't know where*. Think also that there are many other causes you could donate to (you can be original). Some people died from the tsunami but how many are starving around ? Quote

In afganistan people promise alot of money, but only ca 1/4 came in.......the same with The Earthquake in Iran etc.. But right now they do need help, and they should get it.. What makes me mad, is the turist that says: "ok we will leave for 2 weeks, and come back when you have cleaned up"........... And to me it aint a nice thought to svim where alot of people just have died?? Quote
jonfett Posted January 7, 2005 Posted January 7, 2005 I knew that this tsunami was bad, but from the picture you can see that entire towns have just been wiped out and thousands of people have lost their homes or worse their lives. Most important is to get them started taking care of them selfs!! Give them a future. Give them jobs! Give them fishing boats and so on. Money is important to start an economy!! There is a large crack in the side of the volcano from when it last erupted in 1949 - if it erupts again, there is a small chance that the whole side of the volcano will collapse into the sea (technically it's called a 'slump'). This may cause an enormous tsunami (known as a mega-tsunami) which could swamp Atlantic coastal areas of North America, North Africa & Europe. It has been estimated that this mega tsunami wave could be several hundred feet tall & penetrate up to 20km inland. There was a TV prog about it a couple of years ago, part of 'Horizon' & I believe it's been shown in the US on Discovery or Learning Channel or somewhere, and it was based on research from a number of different universities. http://science.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid...910241&from=rss Note that there are lots of "if"s, "small chance"s, "may"s, "estimated"s in there - no one knows for sure if it will ever happen, or what exactly the outcome will be. Many scientists believe the threat is so small it can be ignored (i.e. the chances of the slump happening are very remote, and even if it does happen, the chances of the tsumani doing any real damage are remote) The reality probably sits somewhere in-between, but there are a couple of things to remember - the chances of it happening in your lifetime are vanishingly small (you're much more likely to get run down crossing the street !), and there's nothing you can do about it if it does happen ! Buildings are rigid - if they bend, they break. That's why. Oh, and please don't stop giving money. The relief agencies are managing the funds going into the affected areas; they aren't just dumping all the cash & walking off. It really is being properly managed - the priority was to get enough food, water, medical supplies & shelter into to the area to keep people alive for the first two weeks. They've done that now & are going back around making sure that everyone has got what they need to keep them alive for another 6 weeks on top of that. In the meantime, they are arranging construction materials, equipment, & people to start rebuilding the infrastructure - roads, electricity, clean mains water, sewerage systems, etc. - so that can start, giving folk the chance to survive in the longer term and perhaps even start to rebuild their lives. If you donate more money now to one of the main aid organisations (Red Cross, etc.), you can be assured that it will be used wisely when it is needed. Ian. Quote

Peoples_General Posted January 13, 2005 Posted January 13, 2005 I only donate money directly to Unicef, Save the Children, Red Cross, or any of those other REAL & LEGIT charity and relief organizations. My experiences in my homeland, the Philippines, as well as what I observed after the 9/11 attacks happened in my NYC.... was that some people will say they'll donate what proceeds and profits they have made and ask you to give them money to help them do that. When in reality they just keep the $$$ that you give them. I think it is a sick, disgusting, and disgraceful thing to take advantage of other people's calamities and tragedies to line one's own pockets. >:( Quote
