"I'll use my Nostrum now. Do you think we need a plan or are we just going to storm in once everyone is ready and take the pirates by surprise?"

Hybros marveled at the the forest below, and the airship above. Never had he seen such a thing, even in all his travels. Such technology... whoever these aoi were, he wished to meet one.

"So what do we do...? I'm for fighting Reno, and taking him out once and for all. There's nothing worse than a traitor to his own flesh and blood... and we'd be doing the Bonapartes a great favor by not letting him escape.

If we do decide to fight, I'll take the last of my Smelling Salts, Nostrum, and Mead, eheheh."

Hybros reflected on his own flesh and blood. Had he betrayed his own people by living on the surface world? He had tried desperately for years to find a way to return to them, but no avail... they must still exist somewhere. He looked up at the airship again. Perhaps... if these aoi were so technologically advanced, there would be a way to find his people.

Yet, the imp felt more kinship to the people he had met in Heroica... Eric, De'kra, and all of the others, even if he didn't fully understand the righteous actions of heroes. For all he was concerned, he still wandered the lands of Ennoc and beyond as a single entity. He had no true allegiance, only the drive for answers...

I say we go and remove Reno from this world if need be. If not, at least we can capture him, and capturing whoever he is talking to will be important as well.

Anyone have some spare meads or anything that I could use?

The heroes were preparing to storm into the cabin and serve the pirate lord justice, when suddenly the door opened and an elderly figure with eccentric goggles stepped out. He carried a strange contraption on his back.

heroicaquest15-vincentlegonardo.jpg

"Ah, you have breached my last line of defense. I applaud your performance, heroes of Heroica", said the old man, who could not be anyone else but the acclaimed Vincent Legonardo. He then shouted over his shoulder. "Reno, looks like your guests have arrived."

The old man then nodded at the baffled heroes, and before anyone could do anything, he pulled a lever in the machine he was carrying, and was hoisted in the air by it. The backpack flew him straight to the airship hovering above.

heroicaquest15-vincentlegonardo2.jpg

Now the way to Reno was unobstructed, and the heroes stepped in, drawing their weapons. They were met with the spitting image of Admiral Bonaparte, save from the clothes and the eyepatch.

heroicaquest15-jollyroger2.jpg

"So you are the infiltrators that my brother sent to kill me", the pirate captain said. "You have done an excellent job fulfilling your task, but before you give me the execution you think I deserve, please hear me out. You've got me cornered and outnumbered, so what's the harm?"

Reluctantly the party agrees, but still keep their weapons at hand.

"As you correctly guessed, I am not your garden-variety pirate captain, but the 'missing' Reno Bonaparte. Surely you are wondering why a member of the family that has guarded this sea for generations has turned against his own kin. Just like you, I am but a pawn in a much larger game. I have lived in the shadow of my brother ever since I got injured in the battle where our father perished, and Nemo was raised as the admiral. I don't know if you are aware, but my brother is not worthy of his title. He has closed the Free Islands from free trade by imposing hefty toll fees to all foreign merchants. This has made the likes of the Hinckwells and the Shadeaux even richer, while taking away the freedom that our city was once known for."

"Last year I was approached by the Ji Pei with a most interesting offer. They would help me gain hold of the Crystalline Sea by providing me with their superior technology. However, I could not just start building a fleet of my own without raising questions, and flat-out murdering my brother to assume his position was out of the question. Despite our different views, Nemo is still my twin brother and I love him dearly. That is why I took upon this new identity as Jolly Roger, the dreaded pirate captain. For months I built my army of pirates and machines here in this fortress, doing some raids here and there to attract my brother's attention. I knew that my intentional "disappearance" would provoke him to strike with full force, and then I could use the Tritech Cannons to sink most of his fleet and gain hold of the sea."

"Little did I know that Nemo got Heroica involved, and here you stand, having destroyed my elaborate plan. I succumb to your will, but not without making a counter-offer. I can still continue working against my brother if you take me safely back to Eubric and we tell him that Jolly Roger is dead. He doesn't need to know that the Ji Pei and Vincent Legonardo were involved, either. I will give up piracy and find another way to end Nemo's tyranny. I will of course make all this worth your while."

Reno walks to a chest and opens it to show that it's filled to the brim with gold. He then locks it again.

heroicaquest15-jollyroger3.jpg

"1200 gold, all yours if you agree to protect me, along with whatever my brother promised you. The question remains, which do you value more: loyalty or freedom?"

What will the party reply?

Posted

"I don't want to do deals with a pirate. And I don't want to support the Ji Pei family who apparently has no honour, dealing with dark magic machines and piracy themselves."

Posted

I agree, however, if it is true that Nemo has been enforcing these mad taxes, simply for the profit of others, and destroying all other competition, he doesn't deserve the title of admiral. On the other hand, how would Reno be able to stop him? Obviously if he keeps trying, in ways other than piracy it most likely won't work. Plus, he said he wouldn't use the Ji Pei technlolology, or whatever that stuff is.

I say we capture Reno, return to Heroica, and do as he said, say Jolly Roger is dead, and bring some unknown pirate with us that may be "Jolly Roger" as Nemo has no idea what he looks like, and then just say we also found Reno. We will get 1200 gold from Reno, and I think it was 1200 gold from Nemo as well. After those two are together, we book it out of there, before anyone has a chance to do something to us.

Freedom. The answer came instantly to Hybros. It was something he could very easily relate to, much more than to loyalty. He himself had wandered alone for 50 years on the surface world, without loyalty to anyone. But what about his own people, and what about Heroica? He knew as a "hero", he had to do the right thing. But what was the right thing? The houses of Eubric would always be fighting, and who was he to say which one was right or wrong? But the mysterious technology and the raids... would letting him go only make things worse, more chaotic? Hybros thought about Wren briefly, and how she thrived on chaos. And before, when Umbra Shadeaux offered gold in exchange for the heroes' cooperation. Was he righteous then, by not accepting the offer? These thoughts swam around his head. A look of seriousness came across his face when he said:

"I say we take his offer. We'd reap both rewards, and maybe letting Reno go wouldn't be a bad thing. We alone cannot decide to let these ideas of his die, and it will have to be up to the Bonapartes to settle this matter. We tell Nemo that we found Reno, and killed Jolly Roger."

Posted

"What?! Are you seriously considering cooperating with this pirate and the Ji Pei family when we are employed by the Bonapartes?"

Maurice was chocked by his quest mates' lack of honour and respect for the law.

Posted

Eric's thoughts drifted. His mind was in turmoil, out of control, like a ship that had lost its mast and floated around during a wild and chaotic storm. Many different thoughts and memories crossed his mind. Eric despised the technology these pirates used, he didn't feel they were true pirates anymore. They gave the job a bad name. Plus, bounds of loyalty obligated him to do as his employer commanded, his master. It was the Norse way. But could he truly call himself Norse any longer? He hadn't set found on his homeland for over half a decade. He had done his part to honour the gods, but now they seem to have left him. The world is constantly changing, there's no denying in that. Maybe it was time for him to change, too? The Bonapartes were not a hair better than these lowly pirates. In fact, they could be considered the bigger of both evils. Greedy bastards, intent only on filling their pockets. Agreed, that's what Eric was after as well, but at least he didn't pretend to be chivalrous and noble.

His heart beat rapidly. Memories of old appeared, but he quickly tried to surpress them. He had thought about his people, family, gods and others long enough. It was time to think about himself, carve out a decent future for him. He could always return to his older objectives and goals later on, when he made a good living for himself. Eric's face turned more stern and serious than before. With a slight hint of regret, Eric spoke out: "Let's take the money. We get a decent amount of gold and hey, maybe we could even profit from the coming turmoil. You know, get real rich"

A faint smile appeared on his face. Eric had a hard time to surpress the upwelling thoughts, memories and emotions that reminded him of the old days. It even seemed as if a small tear formed in the corner of his eye, but he brushed it off before anyone could notice. He took one of the Rum bottles he carried with him and drank a great chug. It helped him to forget.

OoC: With the votes pretty much split, I'd like you to discuss this some more and embolden the final answer.

Ok, let's bring it down to this, our job was to end Jolly Roger's (Reno) piracy. We were not told to kill him. Therefore, by simply bringing him back to Nemo, we save his life, and do our job. Also, we were instructed that if we could find Reno, and brought him back, we would receive extra pay from Nemo, and not to mention the extra 1200 from Reno, all of that on top of the money we would receive for completing the task, and who knows, maybe Scheherazade will have an extra 'something' for bringing back her son alive and well. default_blink.gif

Overall, I would say bringing Reno back alive is the best bet, as we would be paid much more, and still complete the task we were given.

"I do not believe that was her intention. I think that she meant for us to return you to your brother as Reno and inform him that Jolly Roger is no more, as you have given us your word that his pirate activities will not continue. This will earn us our reward and a bonus from Nemo. You can also give us our reward for letting you go free. Nemo never needs to know that you were behind the Jolly Roger facade and everyone will get what they want."

Posted

"We can't let this pirate walk free, either we bring him back to his brother and tell him all what has happened, or we kill him here and now. No cooperating with pirates!"

Posted

"You do not wish to cooperate with pirates, you accept a party leader that has been one for years? Let's take the money. I already regret having worked with the Hinckwells before and not siding with the Shadeaux, I won't make that mistake again. Somehow, I just don't trust these Bonapart fellows. I'd much rather side with the pirates, even though they're a rather sorry version of a pirate. I say we take the money and get out this dump."

Posted

"It sounds like we'd be able to get the extra gold either way, because if we defeat him, we get the key. But something tells me it won't be that simple, eheh... I'm still for letting him go, but perhaps Maurice has a point. While Reno's ideals are sound, his methods cause more harm than they solve. Is raiding other ships helpful to stop the heavy taxes?"

Yet, Hybros needed Reno alive. It was important that he had access to the aoi and their technology, and Reno could be the only link to that.

"Let's let him go free."

"I thought you had left that dark side of you behind when you joined Heroica, but apparently I was wrong. Honour and justice means nothing to you and you would rather fill your own pockets then protect the people of Eubric from this scum. If you rather work with the pirates then the Bonaparte family, then why did yo sign up for this quest? That questions goes out to all of you others too."

Posted

Hybros could not answer Maurice. It was a valid question, something that Hybros asked himself constantly. What was he doing here? What was his purpose as a hero?

"Of course, why Maurice? Hehehe... I did not sign up for this quest because I felt some sort of kinship or loyalty to the Bonapartes. They're as bad as any other house of Eubric, and maybe no better than these pirates, who are looking for change in this system. As heroes, what are we supposed to do, exactly, hm? Do what our employers want, or do what's truly right? Are we heroes, or simply mercenaries for hire? Does Heroica really help people or just directly benefit the heroes and their employers? Questions you should be asking yourself, noble Maurice."

The imp was shaking. He has never been so outspoken before, never cared so much. What had changed? Was he really a hero, or simply a mercenary himself, as he had accused Maurice of being?

Posted

"We are heroes with a mission: To get rid of the piracy in these waters. You will have a hard time finding a more noble and heroic mission then that. In what way would the pirates be better then the Bonapartes? Is plundering and stealing an eligible way to take over trading? No! It's evil and unjust and causes suffering to a lot of innocent people.

Besides, why would we want to support the Ji Pei family? Have you already forgotten about their evil machines we fought? Imagine if they were to build and army of those. Imagine to face thousands of cold and callous metal monster, killing anything in their path, terminating all the living beings on Olegaia without any conscience. I can see this happen, it's the future if we let those technicians of Ji Pei get to much power."

Maurice was getting redder and redder in his face as he desperately tried to convince his team mates to make the right choice. But when he spoke of the the Automatons his eyes shifted focus and his vision was blurred for a moment. When it came back he really saw it: The metal armies of thousands and thousands of Automatons, marching in perfect lines. Lifeless red eyes stared at him from all directions, the rhythmic sound of steel feet against the ground, coming closer and closer. Without any signal all the Automatons lifted their Tri-dazer arms and pointed them at Maurice. He could see the lightning power charging up, the dark magic that was going to destroy him, not only his body but his soul as well. Burned out of existence, shattered in a million pieces. The metal monsters fired at him and...he were back with his team mates in the pirate's cabin.

Maurice took a deep breath and said a prayer to the Righteous Light. With the help of Ennoc he would make sure his vision didn't came true. His first obstacle was here and now, if only his team mates could see as clearly as himself.

Posted

Maurice, I know what you mean, however, it is simply our job to do what our employer asked of us, he told us to end Jolly Roger's rule of piracy, and by not killing reno, but just transporting him to Nemo as if we found him captured, we are still doing what he asked of us. And we are also honoring Reno's opinions.

"I answer only to my own kin and own only allegiance to them! I couldn't care less about these Bonapartes. These Quests are nothing but a means to an end for me. The pirate is right, the Bonapartes have no right in taxing the Sea so heavily. The Sea means freedom and belongs to us all, but I'm sure a landwalker such as you has no attachment to that whatsoever!" Eric replied the Cleric in his usual calm demeanor, but a heavy hint of aggression could be felt from his cold snarling voice.

The tall Nord then turned to Reno. "We accept your coin, pirate." he spat and then continued "get out of here and don't bother us again. Do what you must, but take down those Bonaparte bastards"

Eric drank the last of his rum and threw the empty bottle at the rocks below. It smashed in a thousand pieces. Pensively he stared at the blue waters surrounding them. "If I have to pay for my past wrongs and grievances, so will this world. Turmoil and chaos will rule, as they rule me. This world will burn and be torn apart as I have been."

Never before had Eric felt so alone and desperate. He had lost his last tie home on this Quest. If the gods no longer had a purpose for him, he was nothing but a loose cannon on the stage, without goals or directions. He was split. He wanted to go home, he still wanted to honor the gods someway and see his kinsmen once more. Those thoughts were quickly surpressed and made way for more enterprising thoughts. The world lay open for him, he had none to answer to. The riches lay there for the taking. Maybe he could stray of the right path. After all, don't all roads lead to the same place eventually?

Posted

Reno Bonaparte nodded to Eric and the other heroes, although he gave a glare to Maurice who had been the only one to object the plan.

heroicaquest15-jollyroger.jpg

"Glad to hear you believe in freedom as much as I do, but if you want my gold, you will have to do exactly as I say. And that means all of you. I will not give up the key to that chest before I've been returned to my brother safe and sound. If anyone of you thinks of backstabbing me and telling the truth to Nemo afterwards, just remember that it will be your word against mine at that point. Now, pick up that chest and we'll get going."

Reno takes off his pirate captain's hat and tosses it onto the table. With that, Jolly Roger has been hoisted down. The heroes struggle to carry the heavy chest as Reno leads them out of the shipwreck. On the stone stairs they encounter someone they had almost forgot already.

heroicaquest15-conclusion1.jpg

"It's you!" shrieks Sham Poo as he comes face to face with Reno. "I thought those people came to kill you, but poor Sham Poo was bamboozled again. No, don't try to convince me that the actions of this lowlife Bonaparte are somehow justified. I've dealt with him plenty enough. Sham Poo will find another way home, and you can forget about your reduced prices!"

The half-orcish merchant then runs off. Reno leads the heroes on, and inside the fortress they run into more familiar faces.

heroicaquest15-conclusion2.jpg

"Uncle!" shouts Attina Bonaparte, and a smile spreads on her always so serious face. "Thank Neron and Neredice you are alive! So, did you nail that bastard Jolly Roger? I could not believe the resistance those pirates gave us. The cannons in this place are unlike anything I've ever seen. Their firepower and range are unbelievable, and we lost many ships. Suddenly the cannonfire just stopped, and we could move in to subdue the remaining hostiles."

The uncle and niece then delve into a thorough conversation about the nature of this place, but the heroes see it best to just remain silent. And thus a journey back to Eubric on board "the Sunflower" begins...

heroicaquest15-conclusion3.jpg

Back at Fort Bonaparte, the news of the pirates' demise and return of Reno is met with joy and thrill. Many lives were lost and the fleet suffered heavy damage, but the might of the family as the Wardens of the Crystalline Sea was not wavered. The admiral summons the heroes to his office to receive their rewards.

heroicaquest15-conclusion4.jpg

"My brother already filled me in on all the details", Nemo Bonaparte says. "Too bad I could not hang that worthless Jolly Roger myself, but I think getting eaten alive by vicious sharkgulls is punishment enough. As promised, here is your reward of 1200 gold to split, and 50 more gold to each of you for giving me back my dear twin brother."

"And you have the gratitude of our whole family now", Hestia Bonaparte adds. "So if we ever need more help from Heroica, we will definitely consider hiring you."

"I too want to thank you for a courageous battle", says Attina. "It seems you single-handedly defeated most of the pirate crew inside the fortress."

The heroes bid their goodbyes, but before they leave the fortress, Reno catches up with them.

heroicaquest15-jollyroger.jpg

"Thank you for not exposing me", the traitorous Bonaparte says. "Here is the key to that chest. I hope our cooperation can continue in the future, for freedom shall prevail."

The heroes nod to Reno, but inside they are still torn. Did they really make the right decision in the long run? Would Reno and the Ji Pei really be able to make Eubric a better, more free place to live?

THE QUEST IS COMPLETED SUCCESSFULLY!

Back in Eubric, the heroes have one final task to do. They have the stolen Hinckwell perfumes in their possession, and returning them to the Hinckwells would please the family. However, each portion of the perfumes is worth 100 gold at the Marketplace. Now each hero can decide if they want to return their portion of the perfumes to the Hinckwells in exchange for an improved reputation among the merchant family, or keep them to sell forward.

"Well, this was surely a low-water mark of the history of Heroica. I would've exposed that treacherous pirate if I had got the chance but everything went so quickly, I don' know what happened really.

Now I will return my part of the Hinckley's wares and I urge you others to do the same. It's not nearly enough to make up for the unjust choices you've done but it's a step on the way."

Maurice was extremely disappointed and he hoped that he never would have to go on a quest with these deceitful so-called "heores" again.
