Rebel R - Critical Hit The battle continues. Hans swings his blade, but the Rebel sidesteps. Unfortunantly for the swift Rebel, he steps into Skrall's shot, and the Ogre's mighty arrow passes through Rebel A, through his intended target, Rebel U, and into Rebel J, ending all three of their lives. Haldor, having lost his original target, instead kills Rebel S, and Tesni, also losing her target, gives out a yell as Hoke prepares his shield, just in case there is danger next round. Rebel K feels like he is sitting pretty, safe from the two heaviest hitters, until Rebel Felton ends his life. Rebel R dances forward and with some skillful sword play cuts booth McColt and Felton (-4, -6) before Jess ends his life, and Dyric kills the final Rebel and collects 8 gold off the battle field, though he almost targets a Guard by accident... Nice work so far, you just killed 27 men. Very impressive, very impressive indeed. I think you have earned a prize, and I'm going to give it to you. One of these Feltons is fake. Yes, yes, I know my dears, you've already figured it out, but which one is fake? That's the question, isn't it? You think you know, but do you? Do you really think think that I would make it as obvious as you think, or have I made it as obvious as you think? You dislike Vonnetate, wonderful judge of character by the way, heroes, he's utterly despicable, but can you trust McColt anymore? Would I even care about the leadership of either side?" You must each vote for one of the Feltons, and no matter which one you vote for, even if he's my Felton, I'll kill him, suck the life out of him myself... and we have an uneven number. Jess, dear, step forward." Jess steps forward, unwilling, her limbs working on their own. Suddenly, she freezes, petrified. "There we go, thank you for being so compliant, dear. Now you're an odd number. Also, dears, you may each ask me one question. Call it what you like, be it vanity or a sense of fairness, but I want you to know what I'm doing. You read my story, what did you think heroes? Perhaps not the best piece of literature, but still, did you learn anything? Please, give me your vote and question, and I shall comply most happily. And if you can't figure out what I'm doing... well, I may just tell you anyway, but I'll be quite disappointed in you lovely smart, strong, righteous heroes. Quote
Peppermint_M Posted February 19, 2012 Posted February 19, 2012 "I would not say I was righteous Wren, I do not even claim to be right. I dabble in the darkness for power against my enemies. My enemies are those who would relieve me of my life or livelihood and that of my friends. I will take a cause if the purse is right or the foe interesting enough to test my strength. Maybe one day there will be someone who I would defend to my last... But I do not claim to be right or good." She paused and looked at the two Feltons. "I never liked the first one we met, he always felt off, like something was not how it should be. I say he is the fake. However, my question Wren: What was this area like before you arrived, were the 'rebels' already acting up and causing problems? I find it would be a waste of your time to create chaos from nothing, a place in revolt would be fertile ground for your dark arts." As she spoke she checked the reaction of each of her fellows. It would be interesting to find out the answer to her question. Quote

The real one would have memories, he would know things the fake one couldn't. Haldor stepped forward with his question. "One of you is real, so I ask a question only he would know. When Jess and the others were in the arena, what was the name of the man who fought against Cronk and had dye to make his face look like a skeleton?" Haldor looked at the sky and spoke out to Wren. "I may not be the cleverest or the strongest, but I try my hardest to always be just and fair. And to help those in need, to do my most to save those who need saving. And what you do is not good in any sense of the word. You are purest of evil" Haldor glared at Wren, before looking back at his friends. I'm assuming Wren didn't give the fake Felton's memories, or I will cry. Edited February 19, 2012 by Scorpiox Quote

Haddon was already on the brink of a revolt. The Rebels were preparing for action. You are right, Chaos from nothing is not Chaos. In fact, as an agent of Chaos, I cannot create Chaos, as that is what is expected of me, and I am doing the unchaotic thing by following what others think I will do. No, no, dear, this region was doomed from the start. As for your darkness, your talk of defeating your enemies... we are not as different as some would like to believe, my dear. Tell your friend Haldor that I am not the purest of evils, if you wouldn't mind. If that gossip back at Heroica caught wind of that, I'd never hear the end of it." "And Haldor, my simple Norseman, you may ask me one question, not the poor, frozen Feltons. They cannot answer anything. Though I am insulted that you do think I would make an imperfect copy." Quote

With those last words Vintul clinks into its scabbard. Hoke eyes Wren evenly, as he plants the great sword's scabbard tip in the ground before him and holds Vintul's hilt with both hands. Quote

In any case, in honor of Scouts, I vote: Wren (NPC) Something in Skrall's brain finally clicked as a curtain seemed to raise on a dormant memory. It had occurred in his younger days: Skrall had joined up with a small roving band of brigands in order to supplement his ordinary highwayman habits. It was during this time that his band had stumbled upon a party of heroes on a quest. It was your normal party, an elven ranger, a dwarf, a few humans, but one had stuck out to him. She had seemed to be the mage of the party and a rather inexperienced one at that. Skrall remembered almost killing the mage several times with a shot from his bow, but she her magic always seemed to assist her. The fight had ended quickly when the mage's magic overflowed in a fear-inspiring burst of darkness magic that devastated the band of brigands, like the low level minions they were. As the party looted the brigands belongings, Skrall remembered the slightest tinkling of bells in the mages speech as the party finally moved on to whatever the goal of their quest was and Skrall blacked out. Now many years later, here stood that very mage, as dark as ever and as annoying as ever with that tinkling bell of a voice. Skrall attempted some small talk, "One question ey? Alright then, I wish to know how a chaos beast is summoned to battle. Oh and how is the 'way of the world' treating you as of late?" Edited February 20, 2012 by Waterbrick Down Quote
Zepher Posted February 20, 2012 Author Posted February 20, 2012 (edited) <Even fixing my NPC dialogue. > "Oh, my dearest Skrall, finally you remember. How lovely. Yes, the tables are now turned it seems, you working for Heroica and me standing in your way. Chaos Beasts are truly wonderful beings. They are summoned by the world itself, and they appear entirely on their own... only... on less occasions than if they're helped along. Chaos is everywhere, and Chaos Beasts feeeeeed off of it. They're ripped out of nothing when there's enough Chaos, and in that way they are Chaos themselves. Some people believe that if enough Chaos is gathered, Zoot himself may rip into existence. But enough of this small talk. Which of the Feltons do you wish dead, my dear Ogre? Also, none of you have asked me the simplest question of all, yet. I wonder if the Nord will think of it. I'll tell you anything, if you ask me." Edited February 20, 2012 by Zepher Quote
Waterbrick Down Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 Skrall looked at the group, he thinks he had figured it out, but he still wasn't to keen on killing an innocent man, even if he happened to simply be a puppet. Skrall turned to his companions, "Well chaps, I've made up my mind, but I think I'll wait until everyone's had a chance to ask a question and now that I think of it the riddle is quite simple. Haldor remember that you can ask the delightful little lady anything." Quote
Peppermint_M Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 Tesni thought about what Wren had said, it was true. She was correct about the explosive situation here and the fact the attacked places that would hurt the guard and help the rebels. There had been no sign of chaos factories and no sign of enslaved villagers. She sighed, "Haldor, ask carefully. We need to come to some sort of agreement and all we can find out would be useful." Tesni's thoughts returned to past matters, Haldor had no idea about her true self, he was kind in thinking her noble and fair, but yes, she and Wren were of the same stock. Quote

Scorpiox Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 (edited) The simplest question of all? I suppose you might not answer this, but it doens't hurt to try. Which of the Feltons is the real one? I was just going to ask that! Haldor stood watching Wren and the others. Hoke was frozen still, with his sword in his hand, and Jess was standing there, a look of confusion on her pretty face. Haldor looked to her, then back to Wren. He looks at her, before asking his question. "Wren, why? Why do you deal with chaos and demons? You used to be like us, a hero, until you took an arrow in the knee you used to help those in need. You must have got that feeling, to feel good about yourself because you knew that you had done something to help another. Why would you turn from that life? You gave up on those who needed you, why?" Haldor walked over the the still Jess, frozen with Wren's magic. He wrapped his arm around her slender waist and smiled into her eyes. Soon they would be bright and full of life again. He spoke again. "You could have been great, renowned accross the lands for heroism and bravery, but you turned from that life, why did you do it. You abandoned friendship, hope, and love. Why?" Edited February 20, 2012 by Scorpiox Quote
Waterbrick Down Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 "Haldor my friend, I think we know why. Were you not listening to the story, tis the "way of the world". You've seen it yerself, Heroica may shine and sparkle like the outside of a king's crown, yet inside may be found corrosion and decay, I remember too well how the Vetrens sparked a racial war that led to the enslavement and inhuman treatment of my race these many years past and that is but one of it's many vices. Most of the heroes here work for the gold and the prestige, not once have I heard of a hero turning down a reward in a show of pure selflessness, all is vanity for those who would attempt to believe that there is some sense of justice or morality that governs these land. I thought coming here to this town would be an opportunity to do somethin' good for the world, but look how easily we were fooled by some cheap trick of a dopple ganger. We may be heroes my good Nord, but we are just men, women, and orcs, nothing more, nothing less. In this cacophony of ineffectiveness we now find ourselves and there is nothing left but the randomness and chaos of the life that swirls around us mixing with the screams of the dying and their blood that pours out upon the ground. We came here to end this chaos, but all we have done is add more to it." Skrall hung his head, but then slowly lifted it, "But, I will be sodded if I don't get one ounce of satisfaction from at least puttin' an arrow through yer gullet miss for all yer high to do mightier than thou attitude, it may not be justice or righteous satisfaction, but it will appease me none the less. I never liked mages and you've just jumped to the top of my most unlikeable persons list. We know who the real Felton is now, so let's finish this up shall we?" With that Skrall shoulders his crossbow and fires a shot at Rebel Felton and then levels his crossbow at Wren. Quote
The Legonater Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 I nod at Skrall's speach. Selfishness. It doesn't only corrupt the wicked. 'Absolute power corrupts absolutly', but so does anything else to do with selfishness, doesn't it? The corner of one's eye can lead you from victory to defeat. You may beat your chests for battle, but the instant wealth, beauty or power come into play you... reconsider. And it's not just people. Entire kingdoms can turn from a shining gem to a pit of dust, all because of greed. And it's not somethign you can cure with a good cleric by your side. Nay, this selfishness is a power of its own. It corrupted Heroica, it corrupts my homeland, and it corrupted Lady Wren, here. This woman in black is the living image of the failures this kingdom has suffered. This fallen mage... she represents it all. No, she will not be turned with simple words, my friend. She is lost to the Heroican cause forever. Let this be a lesson to us all, heroes. A reminder. What we amy gain is nothing compared to what we may lose. Just like Lady Wren. But alas, some action must be taken. And with that... I pull out my longsword, now a cermonial weapon above all else, and point it at Rebel Felton's throat, and utter a Duplovian farewell. K'oyacyi. Quote
Scorpiox Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 (edited) Haldor listened to the words of his friends, before stepping forward. "Aye, greedy and corrupt we may be, but it is only natural to try and be the best of us, the best of men. And we may be small pawns in the greater game, but by the Gods, in our insignificant lives, we can more than men." Haldor stood tall in the rain, his head held high. For comparitivly small he may be, he could be a bigger man than any Witch of Chaos. Haldor leveled his weapon at the fake Rebel Felton, his eyes telling all. Zepher Posted February 21, 2012 Author Posted February 21, 2012 (edited) <My camera cord has gone inexplicably missing in my three day absence, I'll add photos as soon as I locate it once more!> Wren snaps her fingers, and the still frozen Rebel Felton burns quickly and quietly. "Too bad, that, he was a rather fine creature. I've never created a copy before, and I do think he worked out beautifully. I wonder if he had any independent thought... perhaps I just killed something that could have matured into a real being..." Wren gives a twinkling laugh and a shrug of her shoulders. "Aw well." “And now, dears, it’s time for an explanation. I want to be challenged, and if you heroes of Heroica don’t know what you’re up against, what I am, you’ll never do anything to stop me, and I’ll walk right on over you, and that won’t create any Chaos, now will it my lovelies? It’s just like this these Guards and Rebels. It didn’t matter to me who won, as long as the war created bloodshed. That’s why I backed Vonnetate and his army of meanies. He would have been crushed without my help, and your help, of course. The Guards, the righteous, would have won and there would have been very little disorder – they would have just put down another rebellion, but thanks to me and you, there was a war. A real, chaotic war. He hi ho. And Felton is right, he, if he had been on the side of the meanies, would have seen through them right away, so I did need a copy. I left the real Felton alive not because I failed to kill him, but because he helped. The double Feltons... the Chaos off of that confusion can summon a Chaos Beast all on its own. Oh, it gives me shivers.” “Now, Haldor, to answer your question, dear… well, you’ve read some of my personal story. As a hero of Heroica it become obvious to me that the world is an evil and chaotic place, and no number of heroes will help that, in fact, by trying to fix the chaos, we make it multiply. Think about walking up a rushing stream – you create even more severe ripples by doing so. You all think that I am a supreme being with control over everything, or that I am the epitome evil, but neither of these are true. I am simply going along with the way of the world, as Skrall so beautifully put it. The world is chaotic, and as an agent of chaos, I have an easy time getting my way because the world is working with me. What did I do here? I created a single liar, and that’s it. Felton and Hans sent for you and backed the wrong side, and the town itself created the war. I have an easy time because I want the world to be the way it is.” “As for my ‘purest of evils’ status... thank you for that title, Haldor, I think I will use it from now on dearest. Anywhoooo, that is not the case. Again, I am just a product of the world. All the world is selfish, all the world is evil, and all the world is chaotic, and instead of fighting against it, I’ve decided to master it. If you are walking up the river, I am walking down it, and it is helping me along. I am a human in a broken world, so why not become more in that same broken world? My goal is power. Yes, that’s all, power, not as elegant as some were hoping I’m sure, but it’s true. I can’t fix the world, it’s too late for that, but I can master it, and while I’m alive, I can be the best of it. Not the most righteous… but the best. And Zoot will allow me to do that. It is selfish, but the whole world is selfish, so why fight what could make me happy?” Wren leans in close to the heroes and whispers. “Zoot is not my master, I am his master, and I will become more powerful than you can possibly dream. Chaos is the master of the world, Zoot is the master of Chaos, and I will be the master of Zoot. Tremble, my dearests, tremble.” Wren then waltzes away a few steps. If she seemed unhinged before, she is clearly more so now. She giggles to herself and hums happily. Suddenly, she whips around to face the heroes, and behind her appears the three Chaos Beasts - damaged from their previous encounters with the heroes, but very much alive. "So much Chaos... oh it fills me with such joy, suuuuuuch joooooooy heroessss" she croons. "But I must depart. The High Kingdoms are wonderful, but there is Chaos elsewhere, so much Chaos everywhere, and I want to see it all, bask in it all, use it all. Zoot will rise and he will be mine. Good bye, heroes.
