Capt.JohnPaul Posted December 25, 2011 Posted December 25, 2011 William shouts at Isabella from his position up high, "Toboso, go grab Alex and start lining straw along the fort but start at the weakest walls." William then runs off to the armoury to get the crate of hollowed out balls. "Xander! Place the A-Frames next to each other upright and put the beam inbetween them." I'm exhausted remember? Alex, now exhausted looks into the woods, acting as a sentry while the others work. He tries to see if any elven spies or scouts are watching.
posades Posted December 25, 2011 Posted December 25, 2011 Xander stands both A-frames upright, locking them into place in the siege weapon holder. Heaving the beam above his head, he carefully places it between the frames, making sure everything is sturdy.
Fred Daniel Yam Posted December 25, 2011 Posted December 25, 2011 "Oh, sure, yeah, if you really think straw is gonna stop these bloodthirsty goons!" "Well, the least the straw can do is stop any arrows or non-flaming projectiles flying at the fort, Now get to work." I'm exhausted remember? Alex, now exhausted looks into the woods, acting as a sentry while the others work. He tries to see if any elven spies or scouts are watching. "Whoops, sorry, my mistake. "
Brickdoctor Posted December 25, 2011 Author Posted December 25, 2011 You rig the tripwire with the Fire Bombs. Fortunately, this is a task simple enough that no one else is exhausted. Flipz Posted December 25, 2011 Posted December 25, 2011 -==IC: Arthur==- Seeing that the others hadn't understood him the first time, Arthur takes a few deep breaths and focuses on calming his breathing. "You should make the end of the catapult split off into three directions at the end. I know we only have one sling, but we might be able to loot defeated elves' cloaks to get more. That way, we could launch three stones in a spread pattern for additional damage."

QM Note:I'm not sure if I should be giving any more hints, but I feel the Quest will become tedious if I have to keep telling you that what you're trying is too complicated, so I'm going to try to nudge you in the right direction. The sling is a relatively new development in catapult construction as far as you are concerned, and it is not at all necessary. Catapults with bowls at the ends of their arms have worked well for centuries. Slings are mostly for power and distance in throwing large projectiles. They enabled trebuchets to launch shots weighing three hundred pounds in high, long arcs. Medieval mangonels, however, had bowls on the ends of their arms and could fire multiple smaller projectiles faster and on a line. This is not to say that the medieval mangonel is simple enough for you to build right now, but I just wanted to say that if spread shot is what you're looking for, that can be as simple as a bucket on the end filled with pebbles and small stones.

Arthur suddenly remembers that there is a barrel of apples down in the kitchens. "Hey, better idea, if someone grabs an empty barrel from the kitchens, we can fill it up with spare nails from the stables and bring it up here as spread shot. Simpler than my multi-sling idea, for sure!" OOC: How will the catapult up here work, game wise? Will one of us have to give up our attacks to use it (i.e. as if we had "equipped" it), or will one of the Lion Knights use it automatically, or will it act like an extra member of the party, and K-nut will designate its position in the order and its target?

QM Note:Depending on how complicated you make it, I will determine a number of heroes that needs to operate the catapult.
Capt.JohnPaul Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 "I like the barrel idea for the catapult," voices Alex, "I think we should cut the barrel in half so it's more like a bucket and will spread more.
K-Nut Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 Althior, off in la-la-land, () realized that today was the Yuletide. He looked at his locket, saddened that he was unable to spend it with Alexis. He shut the locket and looked at the party. "Did we ask the chef if he had any oil? We could either hide barrels in the forest and/or leave them on the walls to pour on the elves and then William and I could ignite them," "That's Althior, looking for the big explosion,"

Capt.JohnPaul Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 "How far is the catapult coming?" Alex asks. OOC: Sorry for the short post, but I like to post and stay active, and was wondering when it will be complete.
posades Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 "How far is the catapult coming?" Alex asks. OOC: Sorry for the short post, but I like to post and stay active, and was wondering when it will be complete. Xander turns to Alex, crude drawing in hand: "I believe what we have built so far of the catapult is the main frame," Xander explains as he points to the first diagram. "That leaves the beam that lies parallel to the A-frames and perpendicular to the main beam, with which we will attach the half barrel to," Xander continues, drawing the piece in question as he speaks. OOC: Is this what we had in mind for the catapult? I'm a little confused as to what we're building.
Fred Daniel Yam Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 "That is correct Xander, we need other beam!"
Capt.JohnPaul Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 "Does anybody want to go cut another tree, and bring it up here if we're all not exhausted or wait until tomorrow?" Alex will sleep lightly in the night to hear if any elf spies trips on a fire bomb trap.

Alex will sleep lightly in the night to hear if any elf spies trips on a fire bomb trap. "I will gladly take the tree up to where we are assembling the catapult, however I do not have the means to cut one down."
Brickdoctor Posted January 1, 2012 Author Posted January 1, 2012 QM Note: I decided that I'm really just waiting around for trivial details, and it's not helping the speed of the quest. So, here's what you haven't done as far as the catapult is concerned: You need to specify how the arm will be moved. (counterweight or spring, and you need to tell me where the materials are going to come from) You need to devise something for the arm to rotate around, be it just a log or a metal bar. You need to decide what the six hollow rocks will be filled with. (or alternative ammunition if you aren't going to use the rocks, which, yes, are now at the catapult mount)
Flipz Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 Arthur takes a nap. "Wake me before the Elves get here, I want to say something to our troops right before the battle."
K-Nut Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 Arthur takes a nap. "Wake me before the Elves get here, I want to say something to our troops right before the battle." Althior looks to his fellow Mage, rolling his eyes. He grabs a nearby pail of Water and pours it on him. "Just because the superior being, the QM guy, won't let you do anything else before the elves arrive doesn't mean you can't share your ideas with your fellow questmates, got it? Get off your fat megablocks and help us! Bumming around is never an available option," He looks to his locket, the smiling face of Alexis staring him straight in the eye. He didn't know how he'd ever live if she were killed or lost on her quest. He'd kill himself if anything happened to her. That was not just an option to him, it was a promise.
Flipz Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 Unfortunately, the water comes into contact with Arthur's Opal and freezes him solid. "Urk...hak...help...me..." OOC: I was hoping to heal that damage I took from the well...well, looks like that's not gonna happen now
K-Nut Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 Althior can't help but grin at the Mage. He then starts chuckling as he uses a chisel to free him, still laughing like a maniac. OOC: I think we get to rest before the elves come anyways. And I could always whack you with the healing staff I believe.
Flipz Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 OOC: Intentionally healing or unintentionally healing? And I still want that pre-battle speech to the troops! :P -==IC: Arthur==- Arthur sees the look in Althior's eye and makes a mental not to stay as far away from him as possible until the battle starts. What is it with him? It's like he's slowly going mad...I wonder... Arthur makes a mental note to talk to Finnegan once he's free. Alone, if at all possible...
K-Nut Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 "Finnegan, stay here and make sure Arthur doesn't fall back asleep, got it?" "Sure, maybe he can get someone to make a she aura!" "Why do I bother?"
Flipz Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 "Hey, there, Finnegan. Listen, I kinda noticed something about Althior. Is it just me or has he been acting...strange...lately. Just before we started this Quest, he was being all dark and serious. I thought he was just worried about the Quest, but now...he's gotten worse. I didn't think that was even possible. It's like he's going mad...Finnegan, were the Quest books wrong? Was he always like this, and the Quest books just failed to mention it? Or is something...wrong? Is Althior dying, and he doesn't want us to know?" OOC: Makes sense from Arthur's perspective--he doesn't know IC about the Spot...
