They did have cement, since Roman times in fact.

Wait.... why did we need saltpeter and charcoal and sulfur? Anyways, that should be easy. For the sulfur, we just need eggs.

"Charcoal's easy--scrape some off the torches. Actually, we could probably get tons of it from the forest...

Saltpeter's actually not that hard to find--it'll be in the stables, or wherever you've been throwing out your horses' manure. Ask the stable boy.

Sulfur, as you said, can be derived from eggs. Put the three together in the proper ratios, and, well...let's just say our options have increased exponentially."

Spag stared at Althior, looking puzzled. Expelling that much waste through the mouth couldn't be healthy.

He then whispered to Finnegan; "Pssst... what's up with him? What's with the puke-a-thon?"

Before going downstairs, Arthur grabs the rope and grappling hook the Archer used to let the Elves scale the wall. He then heads to the Kitchen to talk to the chef.

"I just had a wonderful vision for a plan! :classic: By the towers on each side of the West wall, we leave the doors open a tiny bit. (Assuming there are doors, which I would think would be standard design for a fort to prevent enemies from getting past and into the tower.) We put the pots of boiling oil on the top, so when ever someone opens it, the oil will fall on them and maybe who ever is behind them. Both towers will have the oil traps, and then we don't have to put any guards on the West Wall. We could command the troops to hide during the night, making the fort look like it has no sentries, and the elves will be enticed to attack the West Wall. And then on the wall, they'll be trapped between the 2 towers with the oil traps.. "

Sorry if that was kind of long and confusing.

"Actually, I think we could set something like that up by propping a few boards along the edge of the wall and tying a rope to them. That way, we can set them off when we want to, instead of having to wait for the Elves to do something specific. We'll still want to defend the West wall, though, in case the Elves bring siege weaponry."

"Hey, William! Be sure to check the bodies for rope as well, the archer should have some extra. the more rope we have, the better!"

"Do we have any cement or something (not sure what it is called in old times or in heroica :D)? Or the important question is do we have time for that much of a repair on fort defense?"

As far as you know, there is no cement available.

"OK, guys, let's find some saltpeter if we can, as well as sulphur and charcoal. In the meantime, I'm giving everyone in the party a torch for burning ropes and ladders. Now, I'm going downstairs to ask the cook if he's got the boiling oil and water ready, as well as to make more fire bombs.

You hand everyone a torch and go talk to the cook.

ava-cook.png

"I have boiling water and oil ready as specified, one cauldron of each. Unfortunately, we do not have enough ingredients to make any more Fire Bombs."

"I shall use my animal talk ability on the mounted scout's horse to see if it knows anything about the elves.

heroica_item_horse.jpg

<Why would I talk to you? You killed my master. The elves treated me with care and respect, and now, thanks to you, I am tied up in the stable of a run-down fort. Go away. I have nothing to say to you.>

I inspect the dead Elve's bodies for armour or weapons.

You inspect the bodies, but all the armor and weapons are either broken beyond repair or missing.

Before going downstairs, Arthur grabs the rope and grappling hook the Archer used to let the Elves scale the wall.

You grab the robe and hook.

"Alright, good work, friend. Alexandre has some ideas about how best to use these, but before that..." Arthur goes out to wherever the Heroes had stored the spare planks (oops :hmpf:) and grabs a few planks and a couple of round stakes, along with more nails from the stable. Seeing William's unsuccessful interaction with the Elven horse (even though he couldn't understand what was said), he makes a mental note to revisit the stables later. (OOC: Bold Action ahead, bolding the whole passage would look ugly.) Arthur sets up two T-stands (that is, one plank rests on the ground and one is nailed into a vertical position like an upside-down T), then breaks one plank in half and wedges each half into the handles of the cauldron. He breaks another plank in half and nails each hald to the extended cauldron handles at a 90 degree angle. He grabs a small wooden box from the kitchens (OOC: I'm assuming there'd be SOMETHING that was empty) and sets the cauldron atop it. Finally, he uses a minimal (0 Ether) amound of ice magic to weaken a little of both the 90 degree planks and the top of each T-stand, allowing him to make a hole through them to slide the stick through. He repeats the process for the other cauldron. "There," he says, "that's an easy set-up that'll allow us to pour the oil and water on the elves without having to waste a lot of manpower. We could even tie a rope to the stand and pull it out from afar. Now, can you spare a couple of servants to take these wherever Althior wants them? I like Alexandre's idea, but the decision is Althior's."

After talking to the chef, Arthur goes to the stables. Seeing how neglected the majestic beasts seemed in all the commotion, he alerts the stable boy and helps him re-shoe and brush all the horses. Noting how agitated the Elven horse appeared, he took special care to bring it as much comfort as he could.

You set up a mechanism to allow you to pour boiling oil and water on elves from afar.

QM Note:

For the purposes of the game mechanics, just tell me where you want them placed and when to trigger them.

You start to take care of the horses.

The formerly elven horse kicks you in the behind and sends you flying out of the stable. Luckily, you land in a pile of hay and don't lose any Health.

Arthur sighs. "Well, worth a shot." He grabs a old, rusty shovel (OOC: read: unsuitable for treasure-digging) and starts scooping through the large pile of manure at the stables. He is careful to stay out of range of the elven horse, but just to be safe, he coats himself in a thin, protective layer of ice for cleanliness.

OOC: For clarification, saltpeter is easily found as the crystalline deposits around and underneath aged piles of manure. If this fort has been used for any length of time at all, there should be a lot of it.

"Umm.... I don't think the planks would be effective as the door trap. We would have to man them, and if they do bring siege weapons, they would probably shoot down the walls and then we can't use it, while putting them on the doors would keep them safe. And if the West Wall fell, we would lose the men manning the oil too. Also, if they fall for the trap, they'll be more cautious or even scared to continue for fear of other traps. So I propose we not use the planks, the planks could be used for other things, more stakes or spears, barricading doors with nails, that sort of stuff."

"We don't have doors on the outside of the fort. That'd be just silly. Besides, these elves are determined to take us down, no matter the consequences. If they could be intimidated into leaving us alone, they wouldn't be coming for us, and yet we can see they are on their way.

"Also, we can set these up to a tripwire or some other such remote trigger. The voice in the sky already told us we can set them off whenever we need to, without wasting manpower.

"I'm not saying your idea of making the wall appear deserted is a bad one, but letting them walk right into the fort is not the best plan right now. If the Elves manage to break down the fort walls, perhaps THEN we should worry about setting traps inside the fort."

No no no!!! I meant the doors on the walls. (When you climb up, you can go left or right, into one of the towers, but to get into the tower, there's usually a door of some kind.)

"Ah, I see. I'd rather just keep the elves from getting to the doors in the first place, we can set up traps for inside the fort IF they manage to bring down the walls."

"How about we just run over to 'em when we see 'em coming, and pour it on 'em!"

Strategising was obviously not one of Spags' strong points.....

I don't think that's a good idea, they'll probably bring more archers....

Arthur suddenly has another brain wave. He builds two more copies of the cauldron framework, this time nailing a couple of spare barrels to them instead of a cauldron. He then fills the barrels with stones. "Althior! Where should I set these up??" While he waits for Althior's response, he goes back to sifting through the manure pile looking for small crystals of saltpeter. "Boy am I glad my ice "armor" (SP:0) protects me from the mess!"

You create two more mechanisms to dump rocks on elves. You also collect the necessary ingredients for gunpowder.

"May I ask what we are doing anyways?"

"*Sigh*...it's a basic alchemical reaction:

•2 parts sulphur

•3 parts charcoal

•15 parts saltpetre

Makes a powerful substance that we can put to all kinds of nefarious purposes."

EDIT:

You mix up the ingredients.

QM Note:

Because I'm such a nice QM, I'll assume that you know how to properly mix the ingredients of gunpowder, and that you don't use objects that could cause a spark and make the powder blow up in your face.

It's actually quite safe, don't use flint or a wooden spoon. Stay away from the fire to roast meat...

Finnegan comes over to the gunpowder with a cigar in his... mouth? :shrug_confused:"What?" Everyone stares at his cigar. He then accidentally drops it into the gunpowder. "Oopsies."

OOC: What's the lesson? Don't smoke, kiddies!

Arthur immediately freezes the cigar in midair at the cost of 1 Ether. "Be more careful, man, this could be our best, last defense against the Elves!"
