Flipz Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 Seeing that the Elves were far away, Arthur sat down to write to De'kra in his book. Hi, De'kra, Well, we've beaten back the first wave of troops. It wasn't too hard--just an archer, a mounted scout, and a couple of regular scouts attacking from the West. Still, I don't think we can afford the luxury of getting complacent--the Elves will almost certainly bring some siege weaponry to bear, and the South-East wall is only slightly stronger than the West wall. We have some stakes set up to keep the siege weaponry at bay, but... I've made a couple of drop traps, one of them drops boiling oil from the kitchens, one drops boiling water, and the other two drop stones. I've also found the components for gunpowder and mixed up a batch. Do you have any ideas for me and the others? How are things at the Hall, anyway? Have any interesting new Heroes showed up? Anyone pretty? Speaking of pretty, has Cinna returned from Salmanda yet? Play well, brother! --Arthur
K-Nut Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 "Alright, seeing as my second in command has gone and sealed himself for a while, I'm positioning William Harkenshire (VolcanicPanik) in his place for now. Does that sound good?"
Fred Daniel Yam Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 "Arthur, can I borrow some gunpowder? I might have some use for it. Althior, I would gladly become temporary second in command." OOC: Woohoo!!

Fred Daniel Yam Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 "As my first decree, I declare all women must be able to vote and men must have a license to carry a weaponI would like to go to the arsenal again to see if any weapons are still there."
K-Nut Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 "Hey, Althior, do you think you could use your Wood gem to make a lemon or two? Ever since we made the gunpowder, I started thinking bout the old phrase...when life gives you lemons, make lemon-ades." "What? Alright, fine," Althior takes out his wand and points a sharp tip towards Arthur. "You know some-" "Don't worry, sir! I have this... You know, I've been thinking, when life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade. Make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don't want your damn lemons! What am I supposed to do with these?! Demand to see life's manager! Make life rue the day it thought it could give I, Finnegan, lemons! Do you know who I am? I'm the one who'd gonna' burn your house down! With the lemons! I'm gonna' get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!" Althior stood, dumbfounded. PL Note: "Althior, can I have the horse after the quest or if there are any spares?" "Why sure! On one condition. Soften up that elven horse to like us. It may seem impossible, but I have faith in you."

You search the Armory, but there are no more weapons inside it.
Capt.JohnPaul Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 Now that we have black powder, could we quickly make a cannon out of a tree trunk? We could cut down one more tree.
Kenghis Ghan Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 Now that we have black powder, could we quickly make a cannon out of a tree trunk? We could cut down one more tree. "I doubt it. I might not know much about artillery, being a Grumpkin and all, but I'm pretty sure that a tree trunk wouldn't be able to survive the expulsion of a heavy metal ball. It'd 'splode! I think..."

"You would be surprised, Spag. Sure, Alexandre, that sounds like a good idea. Just remember, go easy on the gunpowder. I'll try to find a few smooth, spherical rocks by or in the river. And, William, I'd gladly entrust you with some gunpowder."

You cannot find any rocks along the river that would be suitable for use as cannonballs. You also note the following issues that must be resolved before you field a cannon: Who will cut down the tree and hollow it out, thus using up their realistic amount of action between battles? How will the log be hollowed out? Will the log be reinforced with metal? Where will the cannon be set up? What will the cannon fire?
K-Nut Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 What will the cannon fire?[/i] "We could use Finnegan's head for one cannon ball!" "Meep. " "I'm kidding!" Althior goes down to the kitchens to see how many bowls there are and if there are any ingredients to make glue. (I have no idea what those are)
Brickdoctor Posted January 26, 2012 Author Posted January 26, 2012 "I'm kidding!" Althior goes down to the kitchens to see how many bowls there are and if there are any ingredients to make glue. (I have no idea what those are) You realize that you could use tar or sap from trees as an adhesive. Or you could continue thinking inside the box and use magic instead, at the cost of a reasonable amount of Ether.

Arthur instinctively raises his Opal in a futile effort to put out the fire he senses, before realizing that a.) the burn was metaphorical and not literal, and b.) it came from the voice in the sky. He returns to the safety of the fort and idly wonders if he (or anyone in the party) has the strength and/or skill to bend a metal bar into a spring (about the size of 2 1x1 rounds, when coiled but not compressed).

So, here's my plan. 1) I forget who had the halberd, but this is the next morning right? And it doesn't have to be done next round, we could probably make it after this one. (Cut down today, hollow out tomorrow.) 2) If somebody has a fire gem or some really hot oven, we could melt down utensils and dead elves weapons and hammer the soft metal into a ring or band to reinforce it. 3) We should put it on a tower, where there's room. 4) It would fire anything! Rocks I think, would work fine, or more utensils, or perhaps we use the wood we hollowed out and carve them into balls or use splinters for a spread shot. I think if all these work, WE GET STARTED right away.
Flipz Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 (edited) You realize that no one has the power to bend such a bar into such a spring. Unless they use magic, of course. Arthur mentally wrestles with breaking from his usual means of planning versus the awesome out-of-the-box strategies and ramifications that would come as a result of his idea. K-Nut Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 Althior still wants to know how many bowls there are
Brickdoctor Posted January 26, 2012 Author Posted January 26, 2012 Althior still wants to know how many bowls there are Um...okay. You search the kitchen and find one bowl that no one is using.
Fred Daniel Yam Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 I speak to the horse, "Hello horse, I don't mean to hurt you. Listen, the elves whom your loyalty belongs to, would oil you without blinking. They would eat you of they were lot on food. We won't do that, you have our word as heroes. O would give you the best saddle and armour you need, just trust us please."

Fred Daniel Yam Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 " We would care for you too but we're a bit short handed here. We are fighting a war here because we were set up by the Shadeux, the elves probably just cared for you because they wanted the best and purest horses for their oh-so-high and mighty race. They probably replaced you already! Listen, once this is over, I will take you back, if I do not care for you, you can trample me. Just co-operate, please, I beg you."
Capt.JohnPaul Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 You realize that you did not specify a method of hollowing out the trunk. Okay, we use the halberd to cut the trunk in half, then we get knives, more axes, or anything else sharp to cut each half hollow, like now, it would look like a canoe. (For each half) Then we use that glue substance we were talking about to glue them together. And then we have a cannon.
