OOC: I should be Lvl 15.5, Will should be Lvl 8, and Alex, Isabella, Arthur, and Spag should all be Level 4 I believe. Plus everyone but me should have their Health and Ether increased by 1, etc.

QM Note:

:wall: Sorry. I had originally had the battle continuing, and I remembered that you were Mounted, so I changed the outcome, but I forgot to update the party list. I'll fix it as soon as I have more time.

Arasmyth drinks his Grand Tonic. Arthur, meanwhile, begins a thorough observation of the catapult, trying to figure out ways to improve it.

OOC: I'll figure something out, but if anyone has ideas in this regard, speak up! I'd like the catapult to be our focus this wave.

EDIT:

IC:

Arthur takes a break from his inspection to write back to De'kra's note. It seemed like it had been ages--he hoped De'kra was alright.

De'kra,

I am not entirely surprised to hear this. Many worlds balance on the edge of a knifepoint, and the slightest change can tip the balance. Why do you blame yourself for the destruction of that world, though? Did the locals trust you? How do you know that interference would not have tipped the balance, causing the world to destroy itself even sooner? If the wrong people had found out, could they have not used the threat of worldwide destruction as a way to dominate the enitre populace, forcing them into slavery?

Even if, by some stretch, the destruction of that world was your fault, you learned from that mistake. On Quest 4, you did something, you tried your best to do right, based on the information you had at the time. We are not gods, De'kra, our sight is limited. My father once journeyed to a Plane that was on the brink of destruction, menaced by the appearance of a mighty specter. The Specter of legend was in search of a rare and powerful artifact, but my father could not find it in time, and the plane was destroyed. Later, he found out from one of the survivors that the artifact had been destroyed long ago by the followers of a doomsday cult. Does that mean that the plane's destruction and the deaths of all those people were my father fault? No. Should he have warned the residents that the plane was doomed and that they needed to escape? Perhaps. But how could he have known that? The past may be seen with clarity, but the future is shrouded, as a nigh-impenetrable mist. So too, you could not have foreseen the consequences of your actions, and so took the course you judged to be be best, to be most likely to produce the best outcome. The outcome my not have been good, but it was not for lack of trying. You did your duty, De'kra, you tried your best to prevent disaster. Your failure to do so reflects not upon you, but upon circumstances beyond your control.

Besides, rather than dwelling on the past, we must learn what we can from it and then dismiss it from our immediate thought, so we may focus on the present. Unwarranted guilt and self-recrimination destroy our unity; for if we cannot accept ourself, how can we accept others? And if we cannot unite with our friends, our allies, then how are we to perform our duty, or to together forge our own destiny? Therefore it is better to learn, and then forgive, and then to focus on the here and now. For we cannot change the past, nor can we see the future. We live our lives in the present, and to forget the limitations of that perspective are to ignore our own limitations, which is a dangerous proposition at best.

But we may speak more of this another time, when we are at the Hall. For now, I must modify this catapult to make it stronger. The Elves grow steadily stronger, and I recieved a reply to a Z-mail that greatly concerns me; I fear the Commander of these forces, when at last he arrives, may be beyond the capabilities of any of us. I fear a bloodbath may await us in our final battle. I know for fact that a catapult of this strength shall be of limited use in future battles, and that we must continue to improve our defenses.

I hope your Quest goes well! If you need aid along the way, do not hesitate to ask.

As always, your friend,

--Arthur

Alexandre rushes down the tower and meets up with everyone. He catches the fire bomb that was given to him. He smiles, "Victory! I'll go rest now..."

Alex retires to his barracks (or where ever we sleep) and rubs down his helmet with wax and oil. He then slumps against the wall, and goes to sleep with many dreams...

OoC: None of my fire bombs I planted in the ground detonated, correct?

Arthur decides to scan the horizon with his telescope. "If the elves are sending most of their forces the way they just came, then let's leave the Slice N Dice where it is and have Spag keep it running until the Elves get here. If they're changing their tactics again, let's upgrade the Slice N Dice with any spare weapons we have on hand and move it to that location."

Alexandre wakes up from his quick sleep, a new idea in his head. He takes any remaining wood from the onager and battering rams from the elves and cuts (with his sword) them into stakes. He plants them into the East Wall.

You fill in the existing spaces between the stakes in front of the East Wall. Siege engines will now be unable to reach the wall until the stakes are destroyed.

Arthur decides to scan the horizon with his telescope.

You can't see anything on the horizon. Yet.

Arthur rises from his meditation with not one but TWO insane new ideas. First, he scribbles a note on a scrap of parchment and passes it to Arasmyth, before he runs to the battlefield and scoops up one of the newly-fallen elves' cloaks (he had stored his own, clean, dry cloak safely in the fort).

Arasmyth hurries to the kitchen, where he properly juices a pomegranite (according to Arthur's instructionc) and simmers the pomegranite juice until he has 1 ounce of grenadine syrup. He then juices an orange, separating out 1 1/2 ounces of orange juice (the rest he sets aside in case anyone else wants some). He swipes the bottle of rum the cook had unsuccessfully tried to hide behind his back the entire time, and adds it to the mix. Finally, he juices half a lime and uses the other half as garnish. If the boy was right, he thought, this uniquely-named drink should increase my spell powers for this battle, through "the power of pun." Whatever that is...well, I hope it works! He then bottles the Hurricane, preparing to drink it later.

Arthur, meanwhile, rallies the rest of the Heroes to help him. "OK, I need two tall beams, and two more beams that WOULD be that tall, but they curve out to about ninety degrees, so they're about half the height of the tall beams. When you get the tall beams to the top of the tower, carve a groove in each one just big enough for a tiny wheel, then face the grooves toward each other, attach the curved beams to mirror each other such that the top of the curve is attached to the tall beam, and brace the whole thing for stability. oh, and carve similar grooves along the curved beams, again, facing each other. Meanwhile, I'm going to make three axles with tiny wheels to attach to them. Two of these will go through one side of an L-beam assembly I'm making, which I will brace with diagonal braces. (The assembly repeats itself on both sides, making a sort of cart that will roll along the grooves in the tall beams.) At the end of the L-beam that sticks out (toward the curved rails), a wheel-less axle will connect through a beam that will act as our firing arm, and its other end will be attached to the third wheel axle, which will roll along the curved rails. A stick attached to the end will be attached to a rope and sling (this elven cloak here), and the whole assembly will be powered by gravity. I will now break the fourth wall to show you a video that makes a lot more sense than my crazy explanation even though I don't understand what I just said. Oh, and lastly, I'm going to pack a bunch of small stones into clumps of mud and let them dry, creating a sort of scattershot ammunition that will still work with a sling-type catapult."

OOC: In the spirit of Mardi Gras, please let at LEAST Arasmyth's Hurricane consumable work.

*wall of text*

"Hmm, great idea, Arhtur! I believe we made some glue before, correct? We could use some of that to stick together firewood together to make these beams,"

OOC: I'll be away from tomorrow to Monday. I should be able to post here regularly, but if not, posades can control Althior and everything else the party leader usually does, but if he's not on either, vol is in charge again.

QM Note:

You really shouldn't have the knowledge of physics necessary to build the Merlin trebuchet, but since I've always been fascinated by that thing, I'll play along and see what I can do. :grin_wub:

What exactly is the Hurricane supposed to do? Is it like a more potent Mead?

Posted

"Ok, the swords are really really useless, Althior, would you mind if I remelted them and made 1 quality sword out of the metal? Spag, would you mind trading your Halberd for a makeshift one? It would serve me more use as I am fighting mounted."

OOC: maybe a limited Mead/Nostrum combo? It doubles Power and gives Lucky effect, but only for magic? Honestly, I hadn't come up with an effect, I just thought that a Mardi Gras drink themed around Arasmyth and pun power would be hilarious and awesome.

Also, it probably should be 'Suitable for Arasmyth' since its pun power is based around his spell combo archetype.

IC: "Actually, Wiilliam, how many of those swords do we have? 4? If we reworked them, I bet we could use them to upgrade the Slice N Dice."

EDIT: OOC: MUCH better idea: since it's pun-powered, it grants Mead + Nostrum, but only as long as Arasmyth manages to make a pun with each attack.

"Then let's search the fallen Elves for weaponry suitable for the Slice N Dice."

You find a few broken swords and spearheads that, while otherwise useless, would be suitable for the Slice N Dice.

QM Note:

I love the way you're playing this quest so much, Flipz, that I might give you an proton torpedo if you decided to invent it. (kidding, obviously - it won't work if you try) I'll get to building a mini version of Merlin and the Hurricane right away. Which reminds me, did we forget about those cauldron things again?

"I check to see if I can salvage anything from the Onegar."

You find a pile of scrap wood, some nails, and two barrels, in addition to the stones used for weight. All readily available and of no significant value.

of no significant value.

Arthur silently contemplates the gaping hole in the philosophical interpretation of 'value' that fails to account for the near-infinite variety of devious ways an individual such as himself could utilize such items. He suspects that if the law-and-order types of the world were aware of exactly the sort of things he could shape mere "garbage" into, careless pollution and disposal of "refuse" would be a non-issue plane-wide for the duration of his continued existence. Longer, if he made a show of teaching the same to his descendents.

The oil and rock poury things aren't actually doing anything right now.... should we scrap them? We have four, so we could go back to the idea of putting them on doors, that would be more helpful, as we already had breaches before, we could've stopped them from getting anywhere.

"No, I still think we should have them set up on different walls, ready to go. Put them on a door, we only have a chance at hitting one Elf. Put them on a wall, and we can damage a whole group of them. We haven't used these traps yet, but I have a feeling we will need them in the final battle."
