"Hey, yeah, where is Finnegan? If nothing else, we can dress him in a hula skirt and have him dance the luau to distract the Elves. I'm gonna go look for him, everyone else, keep working."

No, I'll look for Finnegan, I'm not needed as much, you've got all the ideas. :classic:

Alexandre then runs to the barracks in search of Althior's friend.

Xander knelt beside the fallen elven corpses, silently bowing his head. Although they were enemies at one point, their souls deserved a proper send off. The bodies, however, were a different matter; with a steely disposition, Xander began to fashion skeleton decoys out of the elven corpses.

"Welp, looks like we'll need more gear, then. I'll scrounge what parts I can from the destroyed Elven onagers and build one onager of our own from the spare parts."

You mix and match parts from the remains of the two onagers.

"Alright! Get me a can. While I'm scraping the flesh off these elves, I'll puke into the can, we can boil it, and then we can throw it on the elves and see what happens!" "I'll also rip off the belts of them to fasten stuff down if need be. I like the Onager idea too, Arthur! So Lewis, see if you can build that up by the Mini Merlin Trebuchet so I can have Will, in a hastened matter, operate both at once!" Althior worried for Finnegan. He hoped no matter where he was, his best friend was alright.

You realize that while that is possible, there is only one catapult mount on the tower. As the Onager is not wheeled, you will have to construct it facing one direction (North, South, East, or West), and it will only be able to fire in that direction for the entirety of the next battle. (you also realize that this consequence would occur no matter where you place the Onager)

Arthur suddenly has another brilliant idea. "Guys, quick, we need to melt down as much metal as we can into a wire." While he speaks, he nails a wooden stake to each end of a plank, making a U-shape. He then fashions a crude swivel stand for the device, allowing the ends to be aimed at various foes. "If we wrap the wires around the stakes, then have Arasmyth operate it with bolts of Lightning, we'll get a device that acts a lot like a Sorcerer's Shield effect can pull the enemy's gear (and gold) out of their hands. Isabella's help with the catapults made me think of it, I call it the Isabella-inator."

QM Note:

Do note that elves could use alloys containing magical metals and metals other than iron (or cobalt or nickel, and they in all probability have no knowledge of gadolinium, for that matter), and they use a lot of gear made of materials other than metal, so there's no guarantee that this giant electromagnet will have that much effect. Also, it could affect your own attacks. (for example, by bending the path of arrows, causing Rangers' attacks to become Misses) In addition, Arasmyth would have to provide it with a constant supply of electricity, expending 1 Ether per turn.

Xander knelt beside the fallen elven corpses, silently bowing his head. Although they were enemies at one point, their souls deserved a proper send off. The bodies, however, were a different matter; with a steely disposition, Xander began to fashion skeleton decoys out of the elven corpses.

You have to use bones from various different bodies, but you manage to put together five complete skeletons.

"Catapult with spices? I don't think that work well.... it would have to hit directly in their eyes. On the other hand, if we have eggs left or a glass case, we could make Black Eggs. We fill the egg with spices and throw them at close range. It would go into their face and the shrapnel and spices would blind them." Alexandre suggests.

Arthur contemplates how much Ether it would take to mutate one of the plants into a Venomous Tentacula. While he thinks, he uses his telescope to scan the forest for any Ents, mandrakes, or poisonous/venomous plants. Meanwhile, Count Knighton turns his attention to Althior and the Slice N Dice.

"Master Althior, would ya mind terribly if we moved tha Slice N Dice ta tha West Wall? Tha majority o' tha Elves'll be comin' from that way, an' it'd make it easier for me to move back and forth between tha Mini Merlin and tha Slice N Dice. The Hiyaaaaaa Hwacha can take hits for two rounds, 'til it runs out o' ammo."

OOC: When Arasmyth runs out of ammo for the Hiyaaaaaa Hwacha, how long would it take for him to man the Slice N Dice? Just trying to figure out if it would be feasible for use to make extra siege weapons.

You realize that it would take 1 Ether to mutate one plant into another plant. You also realize that it would take 1 Ether per Round to control the mutated plant, and that to control it would require your undivided attention, otherwise, the plant would be just as dangerous to your fellow heroes as to the enemies.

You can't see any of those plants in the forest.

Arthur races down from the fort and into the woods, gathering as many ropes, string, and vines as he can find. He begins weaving them into makeshift nets to launch at Elves. He also finds some branches that appear suitable for throwing, and prepares them to be lit as torches to throw at (and hopefully burn) the Elves. He looks at the North and East sides of the fort and wonders how much Ether it would take to simply create a pair of thorny, damaging spiked barricades along those sides. He then mentally chides himself for his stupidity and, with the help of the Count, builds a pair of 8-stud long, 8-stud high wooden barricades with wooden spikes on them, pointing outward. He then runs to Althior. "Althior! We need to use your shovel and/or Garnet to widen the riverbed along the East side of the fort, so that the Elves can't cross the river on that side; the water would come up to the wall, and they'd have no solid place to stand to reach a rope on that side. We can line the very edge of the river with ordinary wooden stakes to prevent siege weaponry from coming in that direction. Meanwhile, someone needs to carve some larger stones to have sharp spines on them to increase their damage, and to try to find a similar solution for smaller stones." Arthur then concentrates on his borrowed Emerald, trying to transform a vine into one with a hidden knot that will make it extend or retract its sharp thorns, so it may be climbed by allies but would deal a bit of damage to enemies who try to climb it. He plans to attach it to the wall to reduce the amount of time it would take for Count Knyghton to get between the Mini Merlin and the siege weapons on the ground.

Althior hears him name from Arthur and something about a shovel, and he panics, he runs, and starts digging out the east riverbed, hoping to make a watery grave.

Arthur checks his journal and sees De'kra's response. He reads it aloud to the rest of the party, at least the parts that would be relevant to them.

In the gloaming of the Core War, the scientists decided to end the war by any means necessary, at least in the world where Spherus-Magna ended. To this end they built assassins, who would kill anyone holding a weapon. Though these killers were not truly sapient like the artificial race in the other reality, they were extremely effective hunters.

The reason these machines were so effective, aside from the fact that their off-switch failed to work, was that they were shapeshifters. They could turn into boulders, trees, and bushes. They weren’t smart enough to mimic creatures or people, but everything else was fair game. Perhaps you could utilize some form of this technique, perhaps hiding some of your troops among the dead or in disguise, so they can ambush in secret.

A major part of my worlds was unity. Heroes fought together, and if necessary died together. Villagers would stand together against great odds, sometimes against foes that an individual hero might prefer to avoid. Unity was everything, and not just in culture.

Those short heroes I mentioned, along with some larger equivalents, each had only one elemental power, for some fire, for others water, and so on. Because of this heroes tended to work in groups with people of different elements, to solve problems. Although their powers were great apart, their might was even greater combined.

A hero of Fire and a hero of Earth or Stone for instance could cause a volcano to erupt together, and create magma even if they had no volcano to ignite. A hero of Air and a hero of Water could create a storm, while a hero of Fire and a Hero of Air could create a glass seal, should they have sand nearby. Heroes and Ice and Fire could also combine their strengths to form an instant seal to a hole.

But the greatest power was if six heroes of different elements combined their powers on one foe/object. This would create a seal, one that is unbreakable and indestructible. The only way to destroy that barrier is if the exact same six heroes combined their powers again on the exact spot. Otherwise, not even the strongest foes could destroy it.

I realize that the elements of my people are different than those of Uland, no one here commands Gravity or Magnetism for instance. But hopefully these ideas could help a little; the volcano plan might be useful, if destructive. And if you don’t awaken a volcano, you might disturb the ground enough to cause an earthquake to stun your foes. It might hit your castle though.

Likewise you could use power over plants to create a thick patch of thorns to rip and tear through your foes. Also if your freeze the ground, you might not only make the ground slippery, but also splinter the rock and weaken it. This might make the volcano idea more effective. If you have a great control of power over wind, you could also keep your foes in a vacuum by keeping the air out of it, but it might be easier to suffocate them with a sphere of water.

If you have control over fire and water you could create a cloud of steam which would obscure their aim. If you have weapons that can hit multiple targets, you can fire into the fog and still have a good chance of hitting them, while their aim would miss you, and they might stumble into traps. Not to mention if the fog is hot enough it could burn them slightly. Sending pulses of light might also blind them briefly, and could cause them to stumble into traps or mistake their fellows for enemies. Hopefully these ideas will help.

Arthur dashes off a reply.

I'm not sure exactly how many of those we will be able to implement, but the ones we can will be most helpful. The vines, in particular, are a great idea, I think a part of me must have known something of what you wrote before I actually read it. (OOC:  )

Boy, that technique of the six element-users sounds like a handy trick. Too bad we only have four magic-users with us, though: myself, Althior, Arasmyth, and our pacifist healer, Luke. When we get a new Hero from the Hall (one of our Barbarians, Spag, succumbed to the horrors of war and had to be sent back to Eubric), perhaps they will be a magic-user, but that still leaves us one short of what we would need for that power.

Are there any machines your scientists built that we would be able to replicate? We have little metal, but plenty of wood, and some stone if needed, thanks to Althior's Garnet. Perhaps something powered by steam?

I really appreciate all you've done for us, De'kra, without your help we would have never made it this far. I look forward to getting to Quest together in person, if I survive the great battle to come, that is.

I am, and always will be, your friend,

--Arthur

Arthur silently reminds the voice in the sky that Count Knyghton has partially repaired but also sabotaged the Elven Bridge Launcher so it will collapse when the Elves stand on it.
