Alexandre, you convince Althior to subconsciously give his permission. Luke, you take Althior's Garnet and divert a portion of the river around the West and North Walls, where it rejoins the main river. You expend all your Ether and collapse, barely conscious.

Level: 5

Health: 15/15

Ammunition: Explosive Arrows (2 Turns-worth) -
The Hiyaaaaaa Hwacha will target every enemy in front of a selected wall. (example statement of action: "Hiyaaaaaa Hwacha targets enemies in front of the East Wall") Explosive arrows have a 50% chance per target of exploding violently and imparting a
Burning
effect, causing the target to lose 2 Health per Round until the fire is extinguished.

Note: The Hiyaaaaaa Hwacha must take a Turn after each attack to reload - this need can be eliminated by assigning a second Operator to the weapon.

Arthur reminds Luke and Alexandre that the Job Trait of the Voice in the Sky is called "Smite". He hopes that this will in some way please the Voice in the sky, as the specific phrasing he used most certainly did not please either of those two.

"Luke, ya bloody maniac, are ye tryin' ta get yerself killed? Try askin' Alexandre, William, or Isabella if ya can borrow theirs."

"Speaking of you two, Isabella, will you let me use your Venom for something? And William, mind if I use your Smoke Bomb? I want to combine the two into a Gas Trap that can be thrown or set off to release a cloud of toxic gas that would reduce the Elves' visibility and would have a chance to poison them as well. Meanwhile, I'm going to gather some bucketfulls of Nails and bury them along the West approach vectors, this should allow Arasmyth to strike more powerfully and more accurately with his Lightning spells, increasing or perhaps even doubling his Power when using that Gem. The same would go for Althior if he uses his Topaz, of course."

OOC: The official name for the nail things are Etherial Spike Traps.

You bury nails in the ground across from the West Wall. You realize that heroes would now have a temporary Lucky effect whenever they cast Lightning Elemental spells aimed in that direction.

QM Note:

Have you decided whether or not to try the infiltration mission? If you are going to do that, I need to build some new sets.

Also, the Reconstructed Onager is still waiting for a verdict on its placement.

OOC: Can we ret-con the movement of the Slice N Dice to put it on that spit of land with the Hwacha? I have a third siege weapon I'd like to add to it (I think you know what it is), but it'd be completely useless unless it has free access to the West.

IC:

Arthur quickly whispers an urgent series of plans and hands a few scraps of parchment to Count Knyghton, who nods excitedly and sets to work. "The chain'd be a bit of a problem, so I'll have ta use rope instead. That'd slow it down to two or three arrows per round, unless the user gets lucky."

"Do it. And attach the mechanism to the crank for the Slice N Dice, it'll be impossible to aim anyway, we'll just have to let it target a random foe and hope that luck and the Voice in the Sky favor us. Meanwhile, Arasmyth, Alexandre, you up for that infiltration? Since Althior's asleep, he can't stop us, and it'd be a valuable chance to gain info. I'm ready to go if you agree. If we do leave, Alexandre, you should lend your bedroll to Luke so he can rest. William, Isabella don't forget what I said about the Gas Trap (Venom + Smoke bomb), it'll be real helpful when we get back."

OOC: I'd suggest the Onager sit on that little island as well, it's not as if it'd be more useful anywhere else now that we have uncrossable river on two sides and delaying river on the other two.

"I'm still against it, like Althior. The elves are already on the move, and knowing my brethren, they will not be fooled. We need your expertise, Arthur."

QM Note:

I'm afraid I don't know what mechanism you're talking about. I assume it has something to do with the arrow machine gun.

Also, remember that without a mount, the Onager has to point in one direction and only target enemies in that general direction, so you need to select a direction for it to point, too.

Posted (edited)

"If I may, Heroes, I'd recommend pointing the Onager South. True, the bulk of the forces shall strike from the West, but there are a number coming from the South, and we don't want to risk the other siege weapons taking unnecessary damage."

OOC: He's basically recreating the arrow machine gun, but belting it to the Slice N Dice's crank so the same Hero can operate both.

Also, I wanted to see more of Doc's builds... :cry_sad: Idea: Doc builds them, and then, one way or another, by the time the Quest is over the pics will be revealed.

"Too bad we don't have De'kra's Cloak of the Elven Spy--then we'd be able to get the information without me having to leave. Man, I'd love to have one of those, even if I can't use it. Maybe one day, though..."

"Say, Luke, what if Arasmyth and Alexandre go alone, then? It might not be as strong of a cover story, but their Elven heritage should cover that. What do you say?"

EDIT:

Arthur has yet another brain wave. He cuts a simple panel of wood, cuts it in half, and fashions a simple hinge. He nails some blocks to the top so the hinge can't close all the way in on itself, then hammers nails through the wood so the side that can close is ringed with sharp spikes. He uses a spare bowstring to add tension, causing the trap to want to snap shut, then carves a small catch-hook to attach to the blocks; the catch is strong enough to resist the pull of the bowstring, but when the trap is trod upon, it will damage the hapless victim. (OOC: For game purposes, can we say that an enemy injured by this can no longer make Free Hits for _ number of rounds or something?) He repeats this process five more times, and he loosely covers them with grass and leaves, leaving one on each likely crossing point to the small island, one near the base of the South-West wall, and three along the fort side of the North wall (note: if there is no ground along the North wall anymore, just put one at each of the other points). He then alerts his other party members to the locations of the impromptu bear-traps.

Arthur approaches Althior's sleeping form. Being careful not to disturb Althior, he looks at his master's Diamond and whispers, "Finnegan? I know you can hear me, back in the Hall Alexis mentioned she could summon a she-aura only when she had a Diamond. Listen. I know things look bad, but you have to come back. You're a source of comfort and ease to all of us, and you're a prime inspiration to us all. You loyally do whatever you can to improve the world, whenever you can, a shining example of heroic behavior. We need you. We all need you. Althior needs you, even if he's too stubborn to admit it. How long did it take him to reveal his Mark to the rest of us? Ages. It'll be even longer before he admits how much he depends on you. And we all depend on you, for you are the embodiment of all that is good and pure in our friend. Without you, Althior shall fall much faster than he otherwise would, and the world itself will be a much darker place. I beseech you to return, for even if Althior doesn't need you...I do. A life without laughter is no life at all, and it is not one I would wish on any being." The silence stretches, and Arthur hesitantly adds, "If you cannot abide Althior, then perhaps for the present..." I hope I don't regret this "...perhaps for the present you could stay with me."

William sits next to the river, thinking over a problem. The more on it, the more annoyed he got. There was someone in the party who kept on annoying him. That person wore a blue hat and wielded a ridiculous golden staff. He had been building siege machines and while William built the first catapult and dug a giant hole and suggested building rapid fire arrow shooters, he was hardly acknowledged for it. And then the blue hatted man apparently knows knowledge ahead of his time and he's so ingenious. Who made shields and pikes out of pots and pans? Now he has the nerve to tell us to melt down all the metal and ask for smoke bombs. William gallops into the woods, looking for blood thirsty elven soldiers.

Posted (edited)

Arthur looks around. No one is there. Satisfied he is alone, he hesitantly removes his blue hat. "Finnegan? Finnegan, if you come back I'll...I'll let you wear my hat..." Arthur hears a door close, and he quickly whips his hat back on his head. "Well, Finnegan, wherever you are, whatever you choose, I hope that you find happiness. You truly deserve it." Arthur walks out of the room, seeking a quiet place in which to meditate, and perhaps to rest, if he has time. He makes certain to leave his inventory (minus his gold, and of course his bedroll) within open reach of any other Heroes who need his supplies.

OOC: If anyone needs Arthur, now is the time; if I don't come up with anything else by this time tomorrow and no one else needs him specifically, he will rest. Note that he has left his gems, tools, and even potions and weapons out for others to use, they will not have to wake him up to get them.

QM Note:

You built a simple counterweight-powered catapult. Flipz (with some help from Tanma) has mixed up gunpowder, made Fire Bombs, rigged a Fire Bomb trap, made a hwacha, made a practical trebuchet that doesn't need a giant counterweight that would be too big to move to the top of the tower, made a melee turret, booby trapped a bridge, and is working on bear traps, nets, and barricades. Digging a hole and camouflaging it is a classic trick. The shields, swords, and pikes are weapons, not defenses. This Quest is not an opportunity for you to make equipment; it's a challenge of maintaining a defense by thinking outside the box. I don't remember exactly if you suggested arrow machine guns, but I don't remember that you specifically layed out how to make the machine guns.

I don't mean to pick on you or favor one player over another, but I stated at the beginning of the quest what I was looking for from the players. Flipz and Capt.JohnPaul have been innovating pretty much from the beginning. The stakes in front of the walls, the destruction of the bridge, the nails in the ground, and (even though it was done with magic) the widening of the river were all defenses that were done outside the box of the basic rules for battle of Heroica RPG. (additionally, when I mentioned "knowledge ahead of his time", it was after Flipz had sown the ground with nails to attract lightning, and medieval soldiers had very little - if any - knowledge of how electricity worked)

That being said, you did have the idea of lining the walls with hay, but I don't think that was ever implemented.

William gallops back,

"Alright, I need a wooden box of measurements 10 studs long, 3 studs high and 3 studs wide. Then I need a hollowed out tube made of steel, some melted down makeshift swords should do it, the tube is measuring 20 studs long and has a diameter of 1 stud wide. A giant sized cross-bow mechanism is behind this, with an armspand of 15 studs and attached to the tube and the box. A wooden handle operates the string by being pulled up and down. The whole mechanism is then fitted onto a tree stump/wooden block and a makeshift is behind this. The box is then filled with arrows, when the lever is moved, arrows will be dropped into the tube and then the string will send all flying forward thus making a Chinese Repeating Crossbow.”

"Possibly, yes. But if the elves reach the gate, it would be bad. Outside is fine as well. You're da siege boss. You make the decision.

QM Note:

Okay, so what I gather is that Flipz is suggesting a polybolos, which is a dedicated Greek repeating balista operated by a crank. VolcanicPanik is suggesting an oversized version of a chu-ko-nu, which is typically a handheld repeating crossbow operated by rapid back and forth movements of a level. Based on that, I would say that the polybolos would deal more Damage, while the chu-ko-nu would have a higher rate of fire, but I can't tell you anything more until you decide to build them. Do you want to build one or both? (do note that building both would, of course, count against the realistic amount of stuff you'd be able to do before the elves attack again)

Additionally, Flipz, how is the mechanism attached to the Slice N Dice? And, VolcanicPanik, how is the tube hollowed out, and how do the arrows drop into the tube?

Posted

The tube will be hollowed out by wrapping the melted metal around a stick and then once its cooled, burning the stick to ashes and there will be slit for arrows.

QM Note:

Awesome. That's just what I like to see from the players of this quest.

Also, how will the metal be melted down? You don't have proper equipment to make a fire hot enough, so I assume this will have to be done with magic again. I figure you can have Arasmyth use the power of his Wind to fan the flames and have Luke give his Garnet to someone to make a forge.

Or you can go get Althior's Ruby...
