Fred Daniel Yam Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 Same rock, I pray to Oleg to shoot down some intense fire for us.
Flipz Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 (edited) QM Note: Okay, so what I gather is that Flipz is suggesting a polybolos, which is a dedicated Greek repeating balista operated by a crank. VolcanicPanik is suggesting an oversized version of a chu-ko-nu, which is typically a handheld repeating crossbow operated by rapid back and forth movements of a level. Based on that, I would say that the polybolos would deal more Damage, while the chu-ko-nu would have a higher rate of fire, but I can't tell you anything more until you decide to build them. Do you want to build one or both? (do note that building both would, of course, count against the realistic amount of stuff you'd be able to do before the elves attack again) Additionally, Flipz, how is the mechanism attached to the Slice N Dice? And, VolcanicPanik, how is the tube hollowed out, and how do the arrows drop into the tube? OOC: What if we got Xander and Isabella and possibly the new party member to help out? Or is it something else? For the polybolos, the crank mechanism would be a large, crude gear (think the gears in the board game Mouse Trap, but more realistic), and the lower gear would have a belt slit, allowing a belt to stretch to the crank for the Slice N Dice. (The Slice N Dice crank is a short distance away from the unit itself because, well, standing too close to it would be suicide. ) Ooh...what if William built his chu-ko-nu as a handheld weapon, enhancing his normal bow? I mean, it wouldn't be as cool as his super-sized version, but it would presumably be able to be built more quickly and using less supplies... Oh, and one more note, wasn't Spag supposed to return that borrowed halberd when he left the Quest? I just thought of that... EDIT: I think volcanicpanic is saying we kept the rock forge we used last time. Edited March 22, 2012 by Flipz

So, if you build the polybolos, as long as it's in the same general area as the Slice N Dice, you can have the Slice N Dice operated automatically and melee target a random enemy. I still am opposed to players building their own weapons, but if you want to do that, I suppose it's okay. It would, by the way, realistically take more time to build, since the parts would be smaller and more intricate, and would need to be more durable and more precise in order to be a useable weapon after this Quest ends. I did remove it from his updated inventory that I posted in the Hall. If any of you wants it, be my guest.

Dharkan Posted March 23, 2012 Posted March 23, 2012 OOC: Oh well, fair enough, I'm ready when we decide on this stuff.
Flipz Posted March 23, 2012 Posted March 23, 2012 "So, William, what'dya think? P'raps ya'd like an upgraded bow instead of a siege weapon? I've already got a good number o' components made up fer tha polybolos, but since both Althior and Arthur are asleep, it's yer call." OOC: Would the construction of the handheld chu-ko-nu be sped up if it were an upgrade of his existing bow rather than an entirely new construction? Also, my question earlier was: is the choice between polybolos and chu-ko-nu due to time or materials? If it's the latter, than I'll reluctantly say we'd be better off with a perma-Hastened siege weapon (chu-ko-nu), but if it's the former, then... "You know, p'raps if Master Arasmyth borrowed tha Emerald Master Arthur left out for us to use, he could construct most o' tha' handheld chu-ko-nu fer a reasonable amount of Ether, just leaving us to melt down a makeshift weapon or two ta make tha tube. I don' imagine tha'd take too long, and I'd be able ta finish tha polybolos. And we'd get to see tha Voice in tha Sky make both." OOC: Seriously, Doc, I'm addicted to your Heroica MOCs. I fully expect to see the Elven camp even though Arthur's not allowed to go.

I fully expect to see the Elven camp even though Arthur's not allowed to go. QM Note:My landscaping and tents look like MegaBloks. One of the reasons you guys only stay in one place is that I was sick and tired of all the landscaping I had to do in Quest 4. If you did go there, it'd just be some of my tress and some fires and bedrolls. Time and materials aren't that big of a factor in my choice. They're very similar machines, but I don't want them identical, so I'm giving each one its own advantages and disadvantages. The chu-ko-nu historically could be operated very quickly by one person and fired arrows at a lower power. (which is why they were usually poisoned) The polybolos, as seen in the videos you linked to, fired at a rate of only five arrows per minute, but it was more of a ballista and would probably score one-hit kills quite easily. Based on that, I'm saying that the chu-ko-nu would have a Hastened effect, while the polybolos would have a slightly higher Damage (2-5) and be able to fire twice in a Round, but only at the same target. Also, I realized that William's bow is Fire Elemental. He could shoot at the fire until it was hot enough to melt metal.
Fred Daniel Yam Posted March 23, 2012 Posted March 23, 2012 "I think a handheld one is better. Your polybolos would do more damage anyway."
Brickdoctor Posted March 23, 2012 Author Posted March 23, 2012 "I think a handheld one is better. Your polybolos would do more damage anyway." QM Note:Well, the polybolos would also only be able to target one enemy. It'd be like getting two chances to hit a target, but only dealing half your full potential in Damage if you don't hit both times. The chu-ko-nu, on the other hand, would be able to target two different enemies. And, yes, I would allow you to make a handheld chu-ko-nu in the time between battles if parts from William's existing bow were used. So, are we decided? Handheld chu-ko-nu and full-size polybolos attached to Slice N Dice?

Unless the probie new recruit has any more ideas when they arrive, I think we'll be as prepared as we can be. All that remains is to choose our positions and prepare for battle. Master Arasmyth, Master Alexandre, if you two don't want to try infiltrating the Elven camp alone, I'd suggest that Master Arasmyth should rest, and everyone else should take their positions. Although...say, do you have any of that hay left? Master Arthur wrote it down in that journal of his--oops, was I not supposed to have read that? Anyhow, Master Harkenshire's idea is sound, if a bit impractical for the fort--but we have other things that could use protection. I'm going to cover the most vulnerable parts of all our siege weapons with hay for protection."
Fred Daniel Yam Posted March 23, 2012 Posted March 23, 2012 "Ok, I make a chu-ko-nu out of my bow. The metal will come from my makeshift crap."
Brickdoctor Posted March 23, 2012 Author Posted March 23, 2012 QM Note: Okay, sounds good! I'll get some builds done, take some pictures, choose the new hero, and put together a refresher on the goals of the quest, so expect a mega post some time tomorrow or Sunday.
Capt.JohnPaul Posted March 23, 2012 Posted March 23, 2012 " Master Arasmyth, Master Alexandre, if you two don't want to try infiltrating the Elven camp alone, I'd suggest that Master Arasmyth should rest," "Sir, I'll do what I must." He puts on his helmet and lets the chain mail neck guard and coif fall into place. Before he forgets, he takes off his surcoat. That would be bad if recognized.
Fred Daniel Yam Posted March 23, 2012 Posted March 23, 2012 "Can I go too now that Arthur's resting. I am a ranger and in tune with nature and all that."

Brickdoctor Posted March 24, 2012 Author Posted March 24, 2012 You see a pair of horses approach Bric'Bay Fort on the road, coming from the direction of Bric'Lin. I am Sir Lawrence, the commander of the Lion Knights in this fort. As I'm sure you have heard during your travel here, we are being attacked by Brobric Elves. We expect the next to be the final wave. Here's a map of the fort: "As you can see, each wall or tower has a certain amount of Health. Towers and walls will only be damaged by elven siege weapons, unless otherwise noted in an elf's stats. If a wall or tower falls to 0 HP, it will collapse and the fort will be breached, allowing elves to pass through the remains of the wall or tower and into the fort. If the fort is breached and all heroes are Knocked Out, the fort will be lost and the Quest will have failed. "To increase the chances of our survival, your fellow heroes have been building booby traps, siege weapons, and defenses, such as these spikes in the ground placed at the orders of Sir Alexandre, these Skeleton Decoys assembled by Mage Emorith, these barriers of hay on the walls placed by Ranger Harkenshire, and this trebuchet designed by Mage Regulus. Your task when you are not in the middle of a battle is to maintain and improve the defenses. We have a wide variety of everyday items available for you to work with, such as wood and rope. You can see that, as we speak, Ranger Harkenshire and Mage Regulus are working on a chu-ko-nu and a polybolos, respectively. Don't be afraid to think wild and outside-the-box - I hear the Voice in the Sky likes to see such things, and may reward you with XP. "Good luck, heroes!"
K-Nut Posted March 24, 2012 Posted March 24, 2012 Althior turns over after the arrival of the new hero. He groans, mutters something about brohooves, and groans again.
Sloop Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 Helm leaps lightly from the lion knight horse and surveys the fortress. From what he had seen on the outside it was sturdy enough, though there were fewer defenders than he would expect. The obvious weak point was the forest on the western side that extended right up to the moat. He listened with interest to Sir Lawrence. He glanced at some of the siege weaponry that the defenders had made and shook his head, "I never had much of a head for this sort of thing. If I am to make a contribution it will not be in gears and levers, I have no notion of these. What I do have is a knowledge of simple snares and traps for use in the wilds, and perhaps a little insight on elves. My father often faught with the elves that dwelt near us, and I remember their tactics and warriors well. They were doughty warriors once in the thick of it, but over cautious. Especially on the eve of battle they were...flighty, and superstitious." Helms eyes glittered for a moment. "I may have an idea..." Dragging the skeleton decoys, some spare bones, and some rope, he quickly fords the river to the western bank. Finding a good location with lots of thick ground cover and leaves he sets to work. Selecting several strong but springy pieces of wood he plants one end in the ground and impales the skeleton on the other end. Bending the branches way over until they touch the ground and are nearly flush, he quickly ties off the other end to the ground. Unravelling one piece of rope into string, he loosely ties spare pieces of bones onto the skeletons, then fills the remainder of the skeletons with leaves. Finally, he covers the area in a light coating of leaves and then sets up tripwires around the scare traps so anyone approaching through the area will loose the rope tying the skeletons down, springing them upwards in a hail of dead shrubbery and loose bones. Admiring his work Helm laughs mirthlessly, "If that doesn't scare them I don't know what will..."
Capt.JohnPaul Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 Admiring his work Helm laughs mirthlessly, "If that doesn't scare them I don't know what will..." "Hello ally, I'm Alexandre, an we're glad you showed up! As you can see, we're short on defenders. I see you have your first trap set up, that should cause a few bruises."

Flipz Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 "Well met, Master Delvergrow! I'm Count Lewis Knyghton, an Engineer in service of the Lion Knights. I've been working with Master Arthur, Master Harkenshire, and Master Alexandre to develop the siege weaponry you see here. Mistress Isabella, Master Arasmyth and, before his episode, Master Bitterstalk have been instrumental in operating this weaponry, and Masters Althior and Xander have been instrumental in these battles, keeping them at bay by force of will and personal fortitude alone. Master Arthur is resting at the moment, and so I shall endeavor to represent his interests in this situation, just as Luke over here has done for Master Althior, who is also resting. Although," he continues with a chuckle, "I'd highly recommend you get some rest as well, friend Luke. Your Ether is surely quite low, and we need all the healing we can get in this battle to come." He returns his attention to the Barbarian. "In any event, just let me know of any defensive array you can think of, and I'll see to it that it's constructed to the highest standards of quality." Count Knyghton suddenly notices Helm's gaze come to rest upon the tattered Lion Knight emblems, ripped from spare uniforms, that had been hastily tacked onto most of the siege weaponry. "Er--to the best of our ability, anyway." He smiles widely. "Welcome to the team, lad!" OOC: And people say you can't deliver a Wall of Text while your character's asleep.

Say that we are going back and betraying the others during the battle? Slay all the elves in our sight?” “This is the plan I propose, the elves probably know their troops by sight, so we go as soldiers of fortune, join their militia, glean all the information possible. Then we make some excuse for going back to the fort, report back, if confronted, pretend we are double agents then fight our way out.”

I've been fighting with my body and blade for all of my life, I see no reason to change that now. The elves will learn to fear the fortress of Bric'Bay!" Helm walks off into a corner of the courtyard and practices some sword strokes.
