I just got 7939 Cargo train for my little one and it's my first motorized LEGO train.

My son likes playing with trains by hand a lot more than having them run by themselves. Can you push the motorized loco around easily or is there resistance from the motor? Does this damage the motor? If so, I'll take a bogie from one of the wagons and replace it on the loco leaving it un-motorized.

There is resistance. I can't say for sure that it WILL damage the train motor but the best thing to do would be just build a second dummy bogie (there's instructions for the unpowered bogie in the manual).

I wouldn't recommend letting the motor be pushed around. I can't say for sure but, if it has brushes in it, pushing it COULD cause friction on it, as would running it would. While this won't be detrimental to the motor, it would be be safe to build a replacement bogie and save the motor. I was always taught this rule of thumb: if there's wear, there's tear

Thank you all. I will build the dummy bogie and keep the motor for a later date.

His current train system is the Thomas Trackmaster whose on/off switch disengages the motor from the wheels when turning off and allows push play with no resistance (from the motor) on the wheels. This is our first LEGO train an he'll open it tomorrow night.
